Method

Design:

A corelational analysis was used. Two co-variables that were being measured were the attractiveness level of males and females and the fact of weather they were in a couple or not.

The ethics that could come across is deception, as the experimenter couldn't tell the participants what the experiment was about otherwise they would give the answer that the experimenter was looking for, or they may give the answer that the experimenter wasn't looking for and therefore not be true to their judgement. Thus leading to not getting informed consent before the experiment was taken place. However to overcome this participants were given a debrief at the end of the experiment and given a chance to withdraw their results. Although

Opportunity sampling at lunchtime was used and any person willing to take part, could. All participants were given the same pictures and instructions. The researcher was a 17-year-old female sixth former at Dallam School.

Materials:

• Pictures of 10 couples found on the Internet. (see appendix)
• A grid in which people put the number of the picture in a box in accordance to the attractive level they thought they were. (see appendix)
• A tally chart was used to record all the results. (see appendix)
• The pictures were cut up and they all need to be the same size, colour, font etc. the pictures were then stuck randomly on two pieces of paper, one for the males and one for the females.

Procedures:

1. The pictures were gathered from the Internet of males and females in a couple. 20 pictures were gathered altogether, 10 of each gender, cut up to be of all the same, colour, font, etc. and stuck ten females randomly on one piece of paper and the ten males randomly on another same piece of paper.
2. Little boxes were then out next to each picture in which a number could have been written.
3. The paper with both the males and females pictures on were photocopied 20

    Walster et al (1966) carried out a study to test the Matching Hypothesis he did this by advertising a “computer dance” during College fresher’s week in the United States. The total number participants were 752, 376 males and 376 females. When signing up for the dance, the judges rated the participants on physical attractiveness, and asked to complete a questionnaire; the results were inserted into a computer database to pair the participants up for the dance. However, the real purpose of the questionnaire was to use later in the research to assess similarity. Instead, the participants were paired randomly; however, it was made sure that the men were all taller than their female dates. The participants completed a second questionnaire during the dance about their partners. The results found that the more attractive the date they were more likely to liked by their date than less attractive dates. This does not prove the Matching hypothesis as the experiment concluded that the physical attractiveness was the most important factor. However, the study lacks ecological validity because interaction was very brief between participants, hence any judgement was likely to have been of superficial characteristics. The short duration between meeting and rating their partner also reduced the chance of rejection. Finally, because only students were used as participants, the sample is not representative of the whole population.…

    One theory put forward for the formation of romantic relationships was by Murstein – called the Matching Hypothesis. Murstein argued that we all desire the best looking person; however we accept that this may not happen, so we go for people with a similar attractiveness to ourselves. It makes us far less likely to suffer rejection. So, in theory, Murstein’s argument is fundamentally based on physical attractiveness and does not take into account personality. Murstein says that self esteem can also affect this process. If someone suffers from a low self esteem, they are more likely to go for someone who is not as good looking as them to try and boost their esteem. This also works in reverse, if someone has a high self esteem they will go for someone who they believe is ‘out of their league’ as they feel they have the confidence to make them their partner.
