ABSTRACT

In this experiment,we determined the porosity the rock sample that has been given by conducting liquid (brine) saturation method. The rock sample that has been used in this experiment is sandstone and limestone (carbonate). After we conducting the experiment,we found that sandstone has porosity of 4.58% and limestone has porosity of 1.33%.This indicates that sandstone has a bigger percentage of porosity than limestone. This is because sandstone has a well-sorted grains arrangement rather than limestone. This also shows that sandstone is a good reservoir rock rather than limestone.

INTRODUCTION

Porosity is defined as the measurement of storage capacity in the reservoir rocks. It also can be defined as the ratio of pore volume over bulk volume which is the total volume of the reservoir rock.
The basic calculation that has been used to find the porosity is:
Φ = PORE VOLUMEBULK VOLUME = BULK VOLUME-GRAIN VOLUMEBULK VOLUME

Based on my knowledge, sedimentary rock is a good reservoir rock. The example of sedimentary rocks are sandstones and limestones. However, both rocks has different porosity.Based on the experiment that I will conducted,I expects that sandstones have higher porosity than limestones because sandstones rocks has bigger spaces between the grains compared to limestones.

OBJECTIVES

* To determined the porosity of the rock sample which is sandstone and limestone

The Austin Glen formation, which may be found at the Johnson Iorio Memorial Park, encompasses an abundance of clastic sedimentary rocks. More specifically, thin black shale and thick graywacke compose this formation. The thin black shale may be described as fine grained and its color derives from lack of oxidation. This indicates the rock formed in deep ocean conditions. The shale layers are thin, and are approximately two to three centimeters wide. On the other hand, the graywacke shale, which is about fifteen centimeters, is thicker than the black shale. The graywacke is a sandstone and is coarse grained. The black shale and graywacke alternate between layers due to turbidite deposits. In other words, the larger grains are deposited…

These two rock elastic parameters are combined to reflect the rocks ability to fail under stress (Poisson’s Ratio) and maintain a fracture (Young’s Modulus) once the rock fractures. Ductile shale is not a good for reservoir because the formation will want to heal any natural or hydraulic fractures. Ductile shale however, makes a good seal, trapping the hydrocarbons from migrating out of the more brittle shale below. Brittle shale is more likely to be naturally fractured and will also be more likely to respond well to hydraulic fracturing treatments (Ren et al 2014), (Wang 2008), (Rickman…

This research is done to bring together data found by other parties concerning the Womble Shale Formation. The Womble Shale Formation is located in Arkansas, the Ouachita Mountains, and Southern Oklahoma; it was named however for its outcrop seen in Norman, Arkansas (Used to be known as Womble, Arkansas). The age of the Womble Shale Formation has been correlated to Middle Ordovician in age due to fossils found within its shale and limestone layers. The two fossils found in these layers were the graptolites and conodonts. The lithology of this formation from outcrops that have been examined shows evidence that the top layers of this formation are chert, followed by a rather large middle section of fissile shale, with thin beds of limestone…

Innovation is the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulate needs, or existing market needs. The term innovation simply means the act of introducing something new. Without innovation society would never move forward and we would be stuck doing the same old things. Innovation drives today’s market place and it’s important for companies to constantly be thinking ahead and remaining current with the times. The agriculture industry has come a long ways over the years from having a horse and plow in the fields to using GPS systems to drive the tractors. Innovation has allowed for the agriculture industry to advance and has created a more sustainable industry.…

Limestone is a grey organic sedimentary rock made of calcium carbonate. A lime stone pavement is a large flat area of bare limestone from which soil cover has been removed over a long a period of time the acidic rainwater passes through soil it picks up humic acid from the rotting vegetation in the soil and becomes more acidicis. Rainwater picks up carbon dioxide as it passes through the atmosphere. As it passes through soil, the water picks up more carbon dioxide from organic debris. The water and carbon dioxide combine to form a weak carbonic acid. This acid reacts with minerals in the rocks and either dissolves them or turns them into other minerals. Rocks such as chalk and limestone contain calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate reacts with the weak carbonic acid to form calcium bicarbonate which is soluble. It is then removed in solution. Carbonation is extremely effective at weathering limestone landscapes because limestone has lines of weakness in its bedding planes and joints. Carbonation has produced very distinctive landscapes, with distinctive landforms both on and beneath the surface. Limestone landscapes in Ireland include the Burren region of Co. Clare…
