Coping With Stress In College
Many high school students can’t wait for college eager to experience something new, most however don't no what the experience will truly be like and dont no how much stress is involved in college. Coping with stress is a huge part of getting through college. Setting expectations high on academic demands, setting expectations low on social experiences, and deciding not to conquer stress with alcohol will help get today's college students get through the stress of college. One major thing that leads students to be stressed is the academic demands of college. The academics in college are expected by most students to be harder with a heavier workload. Failing to meet their somewhat idealistic expectations has been associated with academic ambivalence, failure, and early withdrawal from college. “(Dana Balsink Krieg) This statement shows a lot about the academic stresses in college, it shows how though students may think they are prepared for the workload they truly aren’t. Some college students may go to alcohol for a temporary stress relief, however they don’t know that alcohol will cause them to be more stressed. The author of Mindfulness and Alcohol Problems in College Students: The Mediating Effects of Stress goes into great depth on the topic of alcohol and its effects on college students. The author states, “Heavy drinking during college years has been associated with a wide array of negative consequences such as poor academics, neurological deficits, memory problems, psychological problems, and strained relationships with family and peers.”(Bodenlos, Jamie S., Marleah Noonan, and Stephanie Y. Wells.) This quote really shows Students the effects of alcohol on stress for college students. Alcohol worsens stressors like academic demands and social experiences. Some students may think they can get there mind off school this way just drinking to get through the stress ,but these stresses worsen when alcohol is involved. The author also states,”In college students, high stress levels related to college life,greater hours worked daily, trauma, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms have been linked to alcohol use and alcohol-related problems.”These problems can escalate to many things making Students even more stressed than before.
