Subject: Cooperation Alternatives between Universities and Industry
This memo outlines the goals of R&D department to increase the level of cooperation between universities and the industry to create two-sided benefits.
The education system and its content become more relevant and integrated with the sector each year. Universities prepare their students as assertive candidates to the sector, and the sector tries to snatch the best ones and educate them more within the firm to be their next best managers. As one of the leading brands in the industry we should affiliate with this mutualism to carry on our competitive advantage.
As the first step, we will make donations to the universities in need for funds to achieve the development they are striving for. These donations will increase the quality in faculties’ education programs and help them coach more qualified students who are open to change. Besides, the publicity of this attempt will create a more positive perception of our brand.
To benefit from this cooperation our company should invest more in education related to research and development. As the Research and Development Manager, I would suggest that we should invest to already existing foundations or establish our own foundation to support a series of Engineering Research Centers, like NSF (National Science Foundation) did in United States. Other firms in different industries will also support this program to their own benefit, and our managers will use this opportunity to gather more information about their sectors and competitors to be more proactive.
The managers who were educated and improved in these Engineering Research Centers will be more familiar with the concept of Managing the Technology. As the Research and Development department, we will continue to use technology as our main strategic advantage tool; and the need for managing and transferring the technology efficiently, is going to increase with time.

Date: 4-11-09Re: Case 3-5A.Discuss the concept of relevance. In your opinion, would the amounts reported by U.S. companies for property, plant, and equipment be more or less relevant than the current cost amounts reported by companies in England, Mexico, or elsewhere?RelevanceInformation is relevant when it influences the economic decisions of users by helping them evaluate past, present, and future or by confirming or correcting their past evaluations. Relevance is also affected by materiality. Information has the quality of relevance when it is 'capable of making a difference in the economic decisions of users by helping them evaluate the effect of past and present events on future net cash inflows (predictive value) or confirm or correct previous evaluations(confirmatory value), even if it is not being used' (FASB, 2005: 2; FASB 1980: 37). In the IASB framework information has the quality of relevance 'when it influences the economic decisions of users by helping them evaluate past, present of future events or confirming, or correcting, their past evaluations' (IASB, 1989: 24). Both frameworks thus say that accounting information is relevant if it has the capacity to make a difference in a decision. The FASB requires information to be capable of making a difference in the economic decisions of users 'even if it is not being used'. However, to be relevant the IASB definition additionally requires that information is used i.e. influences the decision maker in making economic decisions. Another small difference between the FASB and IASB framework is the FASB framework explicitly mentions that relevant information has to have predictive and feedback value, while the IASB uses these terms implicit in its framework. 'The predictive and confirmatory roles of information are interrelated (IASB,1989: 27).…

Thank you for providing me the details of your business as well as your plans for its future. After reviewing all of this information, I have determined that the best business organization for your business would be a Limited Liability Company. The Limited Liability offer limited liability with the tax benefits of a partnership/sole proprietorship. What this means is that as an owner, you can enjoy limited liability for the debts of the company. That should help to alleviate the fears that you had mentioned with the drivers and subcontractors. Another benefit is that you can choose whether you want to file taxes as a corporation and pay income tax on net income, or continue filing taxes through your personal income tax. Please note that on any future business loans may require you to personally guarantee them. Also, Limited Liability Companies are unable to sell stock, and if you decide at a later time that you are interested in selling stock, you should change the business to a C or S Corporation. Another note to make is that business dealings must be handled at arm’s length to not risk being personally held liable for business debts. Should you choose to go with this type of business organization, you will need to update the name of your business to include LLC at the end. You will also need to file ‘Articles of Organization’ with the Secretary of State. The articles of corporation are a basic outline of the business, and its intentions. Good luck with the future and success of your business.…

Exactly one year ago today, I purchased an Alienware M15X laptop from your corporation to use both for school and for my leisure. I had an unfortunate accident where water spilled all over my laptop, causing it to shut down permanently. I called you to explain that my laptop was covered by the warranty I purchased along with my laptop. I received nothing but negative feedback. I was told that the warranty was void even though there were two weeks left on the warranty. I scanned my receipt and sent it over to your customer service department for review. The receipt had both the laptop and warranty purchases on it. I purchased both of these items on January 28th, 2012. I called when I was still able to access my warranty, however I have had no success with having the warranty honored…

A marketing technique of many Further Education institutions is to claim professional working relationships with businesses, in order to promote career opportunities as a direct result of completing a course. It would appear seemingly beneficial to build in subject development with the teaching team also acting on work experience placements or back to floor sessions, whereby their professional skill to absorb, interpret and communicate knowledge can be harnessed. This is not to suggest this does not already happen, possibly easier for part time and variable session lecturers, but the business or industry link being sourced as a partner in the teaching environment and the PCE teacher, a conduit of knowledge and professional…

The Role of Public-Private Partnerships in Driving Innovation L OUIS WITTERS, R EVITAL MAROM, and K URT STEINERT, Alcatel-Lucent The role of public-private partnerships in national economies The use by governments or public authorities of private contributions for public benefit is nearly as old as recorded history.1 For example, in the city-state of Athens in the 4th century BC, prominent citizens made major contributions in order to stage public festivals and religious events and to build public buildings and monuments. Some centuries later, when the Roman army conquered large parts of Europe and the Mediterranean region, civilians worked hand-in-hand with the army to exploit the new territories and build needed infrastructure. PPPs have a long history in the United States of America (USA) as well: the principle that government and political leaders should use and support private businesses—in order to develop scientif ic advancement and innovations for the benefit of the society—was well established at the time the country’s constitution was written.…
