A Comparative Study of Texts and Context

Through the use of context, composers can enrich one’s understanding of texts and explore the deeper intricate nature of the human spirit. Context refers to the set of circumstances that surround a particular item. The context of a text often represents the greatest influence on its meaning as it provides a reflection of the social values and beliefs held at the time. There exists a parallel between characters in both films that display Romantic features. Victor’s monster in Frankenstein illustrates the typical Romantic through its rich, poetic register of language. In the quote “Remember that I am thy creature; I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel, who thou drivest from joy for no misdeed”, the use of words such as ‘thou’ and ‘thy’, words common in poetry, pertains to the monster’s poetic nature. Blade Runner mirrors this the character of Roy, who also speaks in a poetic tongue, as outlined in the quote “Fiery the angels fell, Deep thunder roared around their shores, Burning with the fires of Orc” (a quote from William Blake’s America: A Prophecy). *Shelley also expresses Romantic ideals through the representation of the environment. The quote “The immense mountains and precipices that overhung me on every side – the sound of the river raging among the rocks, and the dashing of the waterfalls around” utilises personification in the words ‘raging’ and ‘dashing’ to give vitality to the surroundings and thus conveys Romantic naturism ideals. Scott, however, ironically depicts Romantic values through the harrowing lack of beauty in the environment. Los Angeles 2019 is depicted as a consumer driven, capitalist dystopia, as detached from nature as it could possibly be, and reflects the issue of environmental degradation that arose from natural exploitation in the 1980s. The use of dim lights, insidious acid rain and darkened clouds to create a moribund atmosphere produces a projection of society that Scott hints to be the consequence of continued environmental neglect and technological advancement.
