Section 1

The development of the tourism sector, showing the main influences, stakeholders and markets.

Introduction

This paper has been written to accompany the PEST Analysis diagram and notes page showing the development of the tourism sector together with relevant further information. The author will provide explanations on where growth has occurred and conclude by highlighting areas where future growth is continuing. Furthermore, the writer will show that many of the areas of development interact with others. There are many areas where development takes place and for the purposes of this report and accompanying diagram an analysis using Political, Economic, Social and Technological headings has been used.

Major Developments

The Factory and Workshop Act 1901 provided women and children with six days holiday from work and coupled with the four days given as a result of the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, leisure time became available to the masses. Due to these political developments a growth in social activity took place with the opening of National Parks and other public land. This in turn led to the growth in technological developments as people wanted to travel and developments in rail and steamship became necessary (Edexel 2011). It is pertinent to note that this time period saw the opening of the first holiday camp which was one of several economic
