Contagion Movie Review
With a cast full of Oscar hall-of-famers one would think Contagion would live up to its star-studded cast, yet it falls short. Contagion, a thinking man’s horror film, “follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart.”
With a close up of Gwyneth Paltrow’s coughing face we begin the foreboding journey of a deadly virus, MEV-1. The camera zooms out and we see Beth (Paltrow) looking pale and clammy, showing no regret for her indiscretion, which causes the soon to be worldwide epidemic. This indiscretion occurs when Beth travels to Hong Kong for business and takes a slight detour on her way home, a booty call in Chicago. Beth believes she is suffering from a bad case of jet lag, but little to her knowledge she is really suffering from a virus that will kill more people than the YouTube sensation “Fred” killed brain cells. Upon her arrival home to Minneapolis, after declining into a disturbing mouth foaming seizure, the cheating trollop dies. The autopsy sports an IMAX worthy view of her scalp being pulled back to expose a brain obliterated by the virus MEV-1. Upon dissection the coroner says, “Oh my God, should I call someone?” to which his assistant says, “Call everyone.”
Millions of other people soon follow Beth’s crude death. Her scraggly looking husband, Mitch, played by Matt Damon, remains unaffected by the virus due to his immunity. Contagion, unlike other movies, keeps the hero, Damon, oddly detached from the viewers. The director, Steven Soderbergh, decided to keep Damon out of the minimal action in the movie by immediately putting him into quarantine. This automatically dismisses any possibility of suspense, no finding out at the last minute if he makes it or not. Mitch takes his daughter (Anna

The threats are even worsened by the fact that vectors that can spread such diseases on epidemic proportions globally will be extremely difficult to control by humanity. The Andromeda Strain could be spread through air inhalation. It is difficult to control the air in African for example reaching the continental America. In the same vein, the birds that were observed eating the remains of the dead victims could help spread the disease in far away destinations. A person who has never had or witnessed a serious disease might miss the actually intent of the movie. To such individual(s), this movie will represent one means of entertainment. The Hot Zone is a best-selling 1994 non-fiction bio-thriller by Richard Preston about the origins and incidents involving viral hemorrhagic fevers, particularly Ebola viruses and Marburg viruses. This book is based upon an outbreak of the Ebola virus in a monkey house located in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Reston, Virginia. The author weaves together the tales of several previous outbreaks in Africa to describe clearly the potential damage such an outbreak could cause. The first appearance of an Ebola-like virus takes place in Kenya and costs the life of a French emigrant named Charles Monet. His bloody, painful death is re-told in graphic and terrifying terms. Hospital personnel treating Monet become ill as well, demonstrating the extreme danger of exposure to this disease. Through this thriller story, many interesting details take place and the reader might not realize the parts of biology in this book.…

We’ve all seen movies like the terminator or godzilla, but could a catastrophe like that ever truly happen? There are many theories on how the world will end like black holes in space, a nuclear war, or an asteroid that hits earth. One theory though seems a bit more bit more plausible, a super virus. A super virus is a virus, or bacteria that could spread around the world, killing millions of people wherever it goes. Since it has already happened once, the black plague in the 1300s, there is a possibility of another one happening. We are also at a greater risk for this occurring because of commercial travel. People could infect each other and not even know it, then fly to Europe and know it’s a pandemic. The truth of this comes from the pandemic…

    Lincoln Movie Review

The movie Lincoln, directed by the infamous Steven Spielberg, is based on the life of Abraham Lincoln and his efforts to pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which would abolish slavery completely. With the assumption that the Civil War would end in one month, however, Abraham feels it it is imperative to pass the amendment by the end of January, thus removing any possibility that slaves who have already been freed may be re-enslaved. Radical Republicans believe the amendment will be defeated, due to the support of it not being completely assured, since they prioritize the issue of ending the war. Even if all of them are ultimately brought on board, the amendment will still require the support of several Democratic congressmen if it is to pass. With dozens of Democrats having just lost their re-election campaigns in the fall of 1864, some of Lincoln's advisers believe that he should wait until the new Republican-heavy Congress is seated, presumably giving the amendment an easier road to passage. Lincoln, however, remains adamant about having the amendment in place and the issue of slavery settled before the war is concluded and the southern States reintegrated into the Union.…

When I originally read the name of the assignment I thought I’d be writing about Herbie, the famous love bug. I thought to myself well that certainly can’t be right so after reading the requirements for the paper I quickly realized I was right. It was not about the car. It was about something that effected a lot more people then a silly movie ever could. This Love Bug unlike the car was a virus that was embedded in emails as love letters and once clicked it dispersed itself in rapid form. Infecting more then 50 million computers over a span of ten days. I’d be lucky if I talk to ten different people over the span of ten days no less 50 million, that statistic…
