While researching on the different techniques applied on previous notable films created by distinguished filmmakers, I learned that they all similarly applied their understanding of human perception into the creation of their craft. To give a better point of comparison among the films cited in this section, all of the movies presented below share a similar technique: the uninterrupted shot. This method was preferred by this researcher in order to identify the differences in styles that were incorporated by each director in presenting his version of the uninterrupted shot. In the 1980 film ¬of Stanley Kubrick entitled The Shining, a long uninterrupted shot of the young boy Danny was shown as he explored the endless hallways of the…
Cinematography is the process of capturing moving images on film or a digital storage device. Mis-en-Scene is used to represent the director’s role of what appears in the shot. This can include lighting, setting, costumes, props and actions of who or what is in the shot. Citizen Kane was a revolutionary film and advanced many film techniques that are still used today. Citizen Kane was released in 1941; Directed by Orson Wells who also stars in the film at the age of 25. It was him film debut. Citizen Kane used Mis-en-Scene and deep focus to show themes in the film. Some major themes in Citizen Kane include loss, materialism, and the American dream.…
Buster Keaton is arguably one of the best filmmakers of all time. During the peak of his career, most notable for his silent films, Buster Keaton revolutionized the artistry of movie production, performing unprecedented stunts and creating avant-garde filmmaking techniques that would soon influence many present-day filmmakers. Although silent films are now considered by many to be a thing of the past, Buster Keaton’s exceptional cinematography, stunts and special effects, and deadpan expression augmented his innovative approach to visual comedy and storytelling. Keaton’s cinematography in his silent films was immensely effective at portraying his ideas onto the big screen.…
The purpose of the auteur theory is then to analyze films if not to understand the characteristics that identify the director as auteur. In the study of film criticism, during the 1950s, the basis behind “auteur theory” studies how a director's film reflects the director's personal and creative vision, as if the director was the original creator or author. François Truffaut, the famous French film director and critic, maintains that a good director (including the bad ones), exhibits such a distinctive style if not promotes a consistent theme that his or her influence is unmistakable in the body of his or her work. Like Truffaut, Andrew Sarris believed through analyzing film, an ‘auteurist” becomes appreciative of directors whose works detail a marked visual style as well as those whose visual style was less noticeable but whose movies reflected a consistent theme. As a result of this influence by critics like Truffaut, the auteur theory and “auteurism” have become a very crucial and influential aspect of film criticism since 1954.…
Throughout this essay I will be discussing how Spielberg uses the first sequence to create an interesting cinematic experience for the audience. Spielberg exploits four main cinematic devices to generate an attention grabbing cinematic encounter for the viewers. The four main devices are: signifiers, imagery, sound and camera angles. Signifiers are also knows as symbols they are the directors way of telling the audience something without…
Biographically themed movie productions continue to envelop the Hollywood landscape – serving as a means to reenact and interpret a majority of history’s most memorable moments (for better or worse). In the last month alone, depictions of Bobby Fisher (Pawn Sacrifice) and Whitey Bulger (Black Mass) are just two examples of cinematic incarnations that have served to entertain and semi-education observers.…
Formalistic filmmaking involves the director's unique aesthetic view of how the film should be presented to the audience. While realistic films are presented with a style of "how it appears onscreen is how it would be seen if present during the events of the film", formalistic expression allows the style of the director to shine through and impress upon the audience somewhat of a "distorted" reality. The various techniques of filmmaking are used to present a stylization of reality by manipulating certain aspects, such as camera angles and movements or the use of editing to warp time and space. These manipulations are often made to be obvious choices by the director in order to call attention to his own style.…
The way films are created and pieced together has progressed greatly over the past century, where before 1910 there was little use of film techniques such as special effects, animation, complex transition sequences and many more. However the introduction of film techniques have helped films gain a sense of genre and establishment as they were used to create specific intensities set out by the director; this is where roles corresponding to certain areas were introduced such as cinematographers, production designers and lighting directors. A classic example of a well-known director would be Alfred Hitchcock (1899 – 1980) who is famous for creating suspense films like The Birds or Psycho. I am mentioning him as he had revolutionised the way films…

“The Ship Pounding” seems to be about Donald’s wife and her battle with cancer. The poem starts with him making his way to the hospital elevators and asking the nurses how his wife, Jane, is doing and how she made out while staying overnight. Hall refers to the other patients as “passengers” in his poem.…
Good morning/Afternoon class and teacher. Today I’m going to be speaking about how Garry Ross the director of Pleasantville, and Simple Plan’s Untitled, develop and convey meaning through the use of visual techniques. Gary Ross develops his ideas of change by using various visual techniques to emphasize an awakening throughout the characters of Pleasantville. He addresses that change is something you have to accept in life, even if you’re not use to it. Gary Ross also contrasts the ignorance and mindlessness of the people who live in Pleasantville with the hunger for knowledge and communicating to the viewer that change and knowledge go hand in hand.…
The essentially religious view of the world that dominated medieval Europe began to change dramatically in what is called the European Renaissance. Although religion continued to occupy a primary position in the lives of Europeans, a growing concern with the natural world, the individual, and humanity’s worldly existence characterized the Renaissance period. The Renaissance, which means “rebirth,” extends roughly from the 14th through the 16th centuries. In the 14th century, scholars and artists began to cultivate what they believed to be the rebirth of art and culture. A revived interest in “classical” cultures was central to this rebirth, hence the notion of the Middle Ages or medieval period as the age in between antiquity and the Renaissance. The transition from medieval to the Renaissance, though dramatic, did not come about abruptly. The Renaissance had its roots in the epochs that even preceded the Middle Ages, and much that is medieval persisted in the Renaissance and in later periods. The Renaissance eventually gave way to the modern era; the continuous nature of this development is revealed in the use of the term “early modern” by many scholars to describe the Renaissance.…

When producing a film, there are two techniques that can be applied. The first being realism, where the importance of the story overshadows the art of production. Second being Formalism, where an emphasis is placed on the production of the film, often resulting in enhances visuals and sounds effects. Although production has advanced since the first motion pictures in the 1890s, the key components of a good film hold steady. Formalism and Realism are accomplished in all great movies.…
During the past three years I have gained multiple experiences in the pre-production, production and post production aspects of film making. Both through school and outside of school. My most recent accomplishment has been the incredible journey and undertaking on being part of a student short documentary film for the Campus Movie Festival (the worlds largest student film festival). A film about dreams, triumph, setbacks and ultimate friendship, “Floating Above Us” was certainly a milestone for myself, as a young film maker to partake in…
