Connotations Of Nationalism
Liberty, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness— these words are all connotations of America’s nationalism. Nationalism has been a past time of the United States, which has united people together for the greater good. However, this sense of pride and patriotism can be manipulated through imagery and hollow words. One example is an ad for the “Esprit de Corps Lamp” by The Hamilton Collection. This advertisement uses some appeals of non-material needs mentioned in Jib Fowels’ article “Advertising's Fifteen Basic Appeals” and patriotic imagery to appeal to the elderly. Through the use of patriotic imagery, buzzwords, and the appeal of the need for affiliation, the need to feel safe, and the need for guidance. The advertisement “Esprit de Corps” can appeal to a person’s non-material needs.
This article uses patriotic symbols and deep warm colours in order to capture an audience’s need for non-material needs. In the background of the advertisement is a large waving American flag, which appears to be indoors. The American flag appears to be taken over by a gradient orange-gold colour; this colour may represent a rising sun, which invokes hope. This ad uses patriotic symbols to draw people in who want to be proud of their country, or to reminiscent past times. Nostalgia is a big part of this advertisement; since, the emotion gives a sense of both happiness and sadness. People want to think about how great their past was, so they talk to old friends, or look through old photo albums. Recently a trend has started where advertisers try to sell people their pasts, and so far they are succeeding.     There are multitudes of unique and genuine advertisements that span from tv advertisements to ads in magazines. Due to the differentiation in the means of communication, both the structural aspects and the presentation of the advertisements vary paramountly.When crafting magazine advertisements, the producer is restricted to specific means of broadcasting their beliefs in essence. The advertiser has to assimilate both physical and literal elements in a equitable manner to fully convey what the argument is claiming.
