Conflict In Rikki Tiki
Rikki tiki tavi
Theme
Rikki tiki tavi was a story about a snake couple who wanted to kill a family named the darsies so they can take over a garden the family owned. The reason they wanted to take the garden over and raise there snake eggs. But a character called Riki tiki tavi tries to stop them. In the end the theme is conflict.

Rikki was a mongoos who plaid in the story as a hero. He also was a main character. Nag wanted to kill one of the family members so he went after the kid. When Riki herd he rushed over there and bribed nag with a snake egg. Riki was attack but Riki faught back and killed nag.

Nagina also faught Riki and Riki faught hard and won. In the end this was about conflict and what it does. This story also teaches

    If you recall in paragraph 25 killing a snake is a grown mongoose's business. This is his first step to growing up. Also if his mother fed him on snake, he would have natural eaten it. Now, since he had other snakes to fight, he didn't eat the snake. This shows how he has grown up. In paragraph 56 and 57, he is trying figure out when he should kill Nag. Paragraph 57 says, "'Now, if I kill him here, Nagaina will know; and if I fight him on the open floor, the odds are in his favor. What am I to do?' said Rikki-tikki-tavi." When Rikki-tikki attacked Karait he just attacked he didn't think about anything. That time he put himself at a bigger risk. This time he actually spent time to think. He considered his options and his surroundings. This shows that he has grown a little more. In paragraph 61 he kills Nag. In paragraph 104 he kills Nagaina. Paragraph 104 says, "...Rikki-tikki, covered with the dirt, dragged himself out of the hole leg by leg, licking his whiskers." He had just gone the rat-hole with his teeth in Nagaina.     In “Violent Media is Good for Kids,” Gerard Jones states and tries to prove that violent media is indeed good for children. He attempts this by saying that he believes, he grew up too passive because he was sheltered from the media. Hearing that the media has "lofty messages of pacifism and tolerance,” his mother borrowed some comics for him to read so he could learn about independence. After reading the comics he said that he followed Hulk for a while then switched to "more sophisticated heroes, “and "finally found my own lead along a twisting path to a career and an identity." Later on, his son was afraid to climb a tree, so Jones read the stories of Tarzan to his son. About a week or two later, his son was climbing trees. He also gives other examples of children who used violent media to overcome their stressful and hurtful lives. "When we try to protect our children from their own feelings and fantasies, we shelter them not against violence but against power and selfhood." Jones is right to say this; violent media can help kids if it is used in the right way rather than being abused. In recent years there's been dispute about whether or not children should view, or listen to violent media. In "Violent Media is Good for Kids" Gerard Jones says that we should. "When we try to protect our children from their own feelings and fantasies, we shelter them not against violence but against power and selfhood." Jones is right to say this; violent media can help kids if it is used in the right way rather than being abused. He doesn't include statistics to back-up his arguments and that is a downfall of Jones's essay. He does however include examples as to why he believes that violent media is good for children. His examples my not be credible, but when you think about it he has a good point: violent media is good for kids if used the right way. It was estimated that about 14 to 20 percent of enslaved West Africans were Muslims (U.S. State Department, 2010). On the other hand, Muslims‟ voluntary migration to the United State began between late 19th to early 20th century. A number of Middle Eastern countries like Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Palestine contributed to such early immigration to the U.S. Since then, Muslim immigration to the country increased particularly in the post-world war II era. Most new Muslim immigrants were college students who came to study at American universities. In the end, the majority of Muslim immigration to the United States has come from Southeast Asia like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. In this respect, 56 percent of U.S. born Muslims described themselves as black, 31 percent white, and 2 percent Asian. On the other hand, about 44 percent of foreign born Muslims identified themselves as white, 28 percent Asian, and 18 percent associated themselves with a mixed or other racial affiliation. Just 10 percent of foreign born Muslims reported that they were black. Likewise, Muslim Americans vary in their ethnic and cultural backgrounds. For instance, 26.2 percent of Muslim Americans described themselves as Middle Eastern Arabs, 24.7 percent South Asians, 23.8 percent African Americans, 10.3 percent Not Arab Middle Eastern, 6.4 percent East Asian, and 11.6 percent associated themselves with other ethnicities. Finally, it is important to understand the difference between Arab and Muslim Americans.     Conflict is normally understood as a negative interaction, or disagreement, between independent people. Personally, I always thought of conflict more as a disagreement or fight between people of different beliefs or opinions. Throughout every person’s lifetime there will be thousands of different conflicts. A particular conflict that I can think of is between my mother and I. I really wanted to go to a friends birthday party but a set of my grandparents were coming to my house that weekend so my mother didn’t want me to. We fought about it throughout the week and on Thursday night the disagreement got worse. We finally came to the conclusion that I could go to the birthday party on Friday night but that I couldn’t spend the night and I had to be home by 9 o’clock that night as long as I promised to come back and not be rude and cranky. I guess we managed the conflict by compromising but I found the compromise unfair because it was more of what she wanted than what I wanted. It could be categorized as a challenging strategy because she was able to be assertive because at the end of the day, she was my mother and in charge. Looking back, I do see a broader range of solutions. I could have been able to go and just be home early on Saturday morning. Or, I couldn’t have gone at all if I was able to possibly have all of the girls over the weekend after. I think that those would have been more productive, especially the second option, because it would have been a compromise that was more of a win-win than a lose-lose situation. With the compromise that we had, we both lost in the situation. Yes, it stopped the fighting and was still able to produce a nice weekend but neither of us got what we truly wanted. If we would have had me stay home that weekend but get to see my friends the next, we would have both gotten what we wanted; me, a sleepover with my friends and her, a family weekend with her…
