Conflict brings out the best and worst in people

Self Preservation
The primal urge for self preservation is often linked to an array of emotions and thoughts, each juxtaposed in the aspect of good and evil. The subjectivity of these often conservative and radical actions, as individuals’ enter an increasingly volatile era of insecurity and hardship.
From the ambitious endeavor of Pyle we catch a glimpse into the many intricacies of the human psyche and how it is affected by the advance of conflict in its many horrors. Conflict brings out the indoctrinations of modern society.
Given the state of conflict, individuals must perform the unthinkable in order to survive through hardship.
Ordinary individuals in times of crisis are converted through conflict, being forced into situations that could cause immense mental physical harm to other person, with their own interest of self-preservation. After the ordeal a piece of their humanity has been forever tainted as they must live everyday of their lives, forever haunted by their own mistakes and actions. The sheer weight of self ultimately makes it impossible to live an ordinary life.

Heroism
Conflict bring out those have heroism, integrity and conscience-Fowler acts in his time of heroism, even though he feels guilty killing his friend, as he breachs his own conscience-liberation of the mind.

Throughout history, it is apparent that individuals of immense mental and physical resolve can
Pyle’s idealism of his own ideologies ultimately forces Fowler’s hand, has his own views against Communism and the actions instigated by his own burning belief, and creates an un-ignorable threat to not only himself but those around him. Fowler’s interpretation of his associate’s actions throughout the story spurs his own (usually cynical, self-centered) ways to be quickly converted into desperate against Pyle, planning his assassination in order to not only appease his re-awakened empathy and morality, but also to protect the peace which has been greatly disturbed by Pyle’s freelance actions.

Depreciation of life
Phuong places her own survival/security over all else (integrity and honor). Betrays religion, face, culture in order to escape oppression by Vietnamese society and the red-light district but ironically ends up even more restricted by Fowler. She uses Fowler as protection rather than a loving spouse, quite common in that society as women are powerless and lack basic human rights in developing countries. People are forced to adapt in a plethora of ways. During war, atrocities spawn such evils, killing enemies is warped into heroism, brutality of the desensitized occurs as the culprits feel little remorse for their victims, massacres, napalm bombings- Vietnamese cost of human life drastically gets brought down, and loss of life in the developing countries can become wholly ignored.
SP- Syria- looting drastically increases, as civil conflict heightens and people's conscious within a lawless domain become very apparent. Human greed, jealousy and other flaws become very apparent, as people are free to express their own free will upon matters without much thought of repercussions and later impacts. Evil and wrong is dispersed throughout population. Social Parellel-the rapings in the Mat City. Black markets spring up, attracted by the break of law and reason, in the interest of exploitation and profit from under privileged people.

Greed and jealousy
The secret agenda/attitude of ruling parties are fully exposed during conflict, as hardship allows for flaws and nature to be expressed. Usually they will act with their own interest in mind, and can scheme for their own benefit at the expense of their followers. Often they are revealed to be corrupt and exploitive, often forcing liberation from the people by internal conflict and revolution of ideology and ruler ship.

Osama Bin Laden, hypocrisy and inability to see how they as Americans celebrated this death just like those that celebrated the death of the americans of the 9/11 attack. Celebration took place were a commentator mentioned "joyfully celebrating the killing of a killer, who joyfully celebrated killing carries an irony that I hope all not one on us".
