I experience first hand what being poor is all about. People working obscene jobs, just so they can put food on the table for their family. Not necessarily is it their fault they do not have a job too. My Uncle is disabled, and yeah he receives money, but not enough to put his two kids in college. Just recently they lost their home to Hurricane Sandy which pulverize the Jersey shore. Now all of these people around the area are out of homes, jobs, and missing family members, etc. Seaside Heights was a place where many people would work because there were always job opportunities there in the summer. From the bars to the boardwalk to being a lifeguard or a beach badge checker. There were so many local business' there that are now completely washed away, floating with the…

On March 18, 1970, history was made in America. Thousands of New York City postal workers expressed their frustration with Congress by simply refusing to work. Even though the strike was birthed in New York, postal workers from many other states also shared the same anger and concerns. Despite the miles that separated them, nearly 200,000 postal workers from 30 major cities joined the strike. Prior to 1970, the United States Postal Service was known as Post Office Department and was also managed by the federal government. Any changes, concerns, or suggestions had to be reported and passed through Congress. Congress acted very slowly to improve any concerns they had, so the American Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO, had their work cut out for them.…

I found interesting that still today in 2016, that people are so invested in other people’s lives that they would go and vandalize a synagogue with the word “Jesus” written just because they don’t believe Jesus is the messiah. People are so caught up in other people’s business it bothers me. Why can’t people just go along with their daily lives and not worry about other people. I also found interesting that people from other religions offered to help clean up the vandalism. I think that shows a strong sense of community and growth in our lives.…

What do we think causes these housing and income problems? The answer is unemployment and unaffordable housing all of which stems from one root; with poverty. This also stems from the fact that over a third of adults in East Harlem have a college degree; however, a high percentage (26%) has not completed high school and this causes poverty and unemployment issues Statistics shows that about one in eight East Harlem adults ages 16 and older are unemployed, and nearly half of residents spend more than 30% of their monthly gross income on rent which puts them below the poverty line. The median household income is around $30,000 compared to the benchmark median around $55,000 for all of New York City, (Goodman, 2013). East Harlem has a greater percentage of residents living below the poverty which is twice as high as in Manhattan and New York City overall (Community Health Profiles, 2006, p.…

Rock Point camp is a beautiful place. A white shelled yellow sandy beach, taking up most of the camp. This beach has sparkling dark blue water, swaying back and forth with force carrying dark green soft seaweed with it. There is a fossil area on the corner of the beach, and massive flat rocks with animals engraved into its grayness, you will see scaly orange fish with only sockets and no eyes laying on these rocks with fly’s hovering over them in circles, as if they are guarding the dead corpses of the fish.
