I am particularly interested Conexiones because it offers the unique opportunity to explore new cultures, develop my Spanish-speaking abilities, and appreciate the commonalities between Extremadura and the Americas. I am eager to immerse myself in the historic culture and experience the beautifully preserved historical settlements. Living and learning in an environment that fosters personal and intellectual growth will be an experience of a lifetime.
Raised in the small town of El Rancho, New Mexico, I have developed a deep appreciation for culturally diverse environments. My upbringing has inspired me to pursue a career that aims to support culturally diverse populations. Though I grew up in a Spanish-speaking family, I never became proficient in the language. Immersion will support an accelerated and thorough language learning experience- an opportunity unlike any other in the United States. Those who have participated in Conexiones have described how their Spanish skills improved exponentially during the trip. Learning a new language leads to numerous possibilities that would not otherwise been available. Bilingual abilities will not only prepare me for success in my future career, it will allow me to communicate with people I care about. I want to have the option to communicate with future clients without needing a translator. I also desire to communicate with my grandparents in their native language. Language is an integral component of my culture and I want to take advantage of developing and maintaining

I have been raised by parents that believe in my potential to create positive change in the world, and that cultivate my desire to help people on a global level. My upbringing was the genesis of my ambition, but the growth of my specific interest in political science stems from my experience as a translator in Honduras. Until then, I was I didn’t realize how much power one’s voice carries. These employers, cognizant of their leverage, set their wages so low that their workers cannot afford to leave the countryside or get a higher education. With no aid from their government, the rural Hondurans fall into a virtually inescapable and corporately-systemized poverty…

On Thursday, September 15 at Cohasset Elementary school in Van Nuys, I worked at my practicum site for the first time in a Head Start class of three and four year olds. My goal for this first class was to become familiar with the children and the classroom routine. One of the first things I noticed was that all the children and the teachers are Hispanic and speak Spanish, although the class is mostly taught in English. I experienced a diversity issue between myself and the staff and children in the classroom. The main barrier I faced was the language. Some of the children spoke only English in class, others spoke a mixture of English and Spanish, and some spoke only in Spanish. Speaking some Spanish helped me, but the children spoke so softly…

I aspire to become a social worker specialising in children and young people; I have always been interested in social work as I enjoy working with people and would like to support those going through difficulties. The biggest influences for me wanting to do this came from personal experience as I witnessed how effective social work can be in relation to adoption, and also recent failed child protection cases in the media such as Khyra Ishaq and Victoria Climbié. Such cases have influenced me to do this as I would like to improve the quality of people’s lives and ensure they are being cared for and looked after properly. I believe I am suited to do this as I have a naturally caring nature and I am able to support others through problems with an empathetic approach.…
