Cone Snail Venom
The Cone Snail is an amazing creature. After more than 20 years of research, a Filipino scientist has discovered that this sea dweller may hold the key to some of the world’s most critical diseases. With years of research and countless hours of studies, could the solutions to many of the world’s most painful and debilitating illnesses lay inside the venom of a deadly, yet beautiful multicolored sea snail measuring fewer than 9 inches in length? Cone Snail Venom is now the treatment for chronic pain relief and is available to comfort those who get no relief from conventional medications.
In the discovery of the Cone Snail, Dr. Baldomero Olivera never would have guessed it would lead to such a medical breakthrough in modern medicine. At an early age, growing up in the Philippines, Olivera had a strong fascination with the stunning snail. After graduating from Sanford University, he returned to his home country, with the same allure for those snails. Upon his return, he began researching the Cone Snail, with a desperate need to know why this snail could kill so many people. Through his research he found that the Cone Snail was so lethal because of the over 100 different toxins found in its venom. Olivera later returned to the U.S. taking a job as a professor at the University of Utah. With a team of scientists, he continued his research. He extracted the venom from the snails, found in the tropical reefs of the Philippine waters. Using the venom, he examined each component. With the help of lab rats, Olivera and his group tested the different toxins, noting that each one, within the venomous mixture caused a different reaction in the rats.
The discoveries made knocked the medical world on its ear! For the findings made by Dr. Olivera and his team, he decided to use his first language, Filipino, to name his results. One component he named “Conantukin” because it caused a

    In You Are a Contract Painkiller (1997, p. 111), author Maureen Littlejohn makes extensive use of personification to describe the functioning of Aspirin in our body, its various properties to fight pain, and its evolution over the years. Littlejohn describes how Aspirin claimed celebrity status as one of the world’s most popular, inexpensive painkillers by relieving headaches, sprains, blows, burns, swelling and fever. Furthermore, she added that Aspirin could also be used to reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. The author supports the main idea by describing how the aspirin when taken with a modest stream of water or ginger ale, passed to the stomach through the esophagus and undergoes a series of chain reactions to disable the enzyme that converts the acid in cell membranes into prostaglandins (responsible for the pain). In a similar fashion it also helps bring fever down. Moreover, the author gives a brief history about the evolution of the modern day Aspirin from almost a thousand years ago when Hippocrates first discovered the property of willow leaves to help relieve pain.     After reading “Consider the Lobster” I couldn’t help but think how ridiculous it is to state that lobsters don’t feel pain, and even more ridiculous to use such statement in order to make people think that they’re not actually hurting the lobsters.     Lizards belong to the class Reptilian, Scientists have said that reptiles have been on earth for about 200 hundred million years. Lizards are the largest group of reptiles with more than 4300 species around the world. Lizards are found in sub-tropical and tropical regions of the world. Lizards come in different shapes and sizes. Most of the lizards are quite small have four legs and have a fragile tail that can regenerate when part of it is gone. They look similar to salamanders. Lizards are ectoderms meaning they cold blooded, meaning they depend on outside sources like the sun, to raise and maintain their body temperatures. Eating habits for lizards is very different, it depends on the species. Some lizards feed on iguanas which are insects, some eat rodents, and some eat both rodents and insects. Lizards use their teeth to scare predators off as protection. Very few lizards happen to be poisonous and use their venom as a defence. Other species of lizards rely on camouflage such as the chameleon that is able to change its colour according to its surroundings, as a defensive strategy. Females of most lizard species lay eggs and then are usually left to hatch on their own. The most well-known venomous lizards are the Gila monster and he Mexican Beaded Lizard. They are found in Mexico and south west of United States. These lizards are classified in the Family Helodermatidae which has one genus containing only these two species.
