Concrete Cube Compressive Strength
Experiment No : 5 Title : Concrete Cube Compressive Strength (7 days) Introduction : To determine the strength, maximum load can be applied and workability of concrete mixture.
Theory :
Hard concrete test were conducted at the age of 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after curing(but we tested it for 7 days only). The concrete strength increases according to the age,the mixture of its concrete design and the strength increment will continue for sometimes. Nevertheless, for most of the work, the concrete strength on the 28 days is set as standard even though it might be determined at a much earlier or longer period. The increment rate of the concrete strength will depend on the temperature and moisture during hardening process.
Objective : To determine the characteristic strength of the concrete and comparison between group 20 and group 25.
Cubes are properly cured and crushed at the ages of 7 days. 8 cubes are crushed at a time and their mean crushing strength is taken as the compressive strength of concrete.
Apparatus
1. Standard Slump Cone 2. Scoop(trowel) 3. Bullet-nosed rod 4. Rule 5. Slump Plate compressive machine
Procedure
1 .The interior surfaces of the assembled mould is required to be thinly coated with grease oil to prevent adhesion of concrete.
2. Pour the ready mixed concrete with certain mix proportion into the mould in 3 layers and each layer must be tamping 25 times using the compacting steel rod .Fill up the mould until overflow and levelled the surface using the hand float.
3. The concrete will be left for 24 hours setting.
4. The above steps shall be repeated for another 3 more cubes with same mix proportion(group 20) and 4 more cubes from different mix proportion(group 25).
5. Record the date of the mixture for every cube and submerged 2 cubes in the curing tank and the other 2 left it dry outside(ambient temperature) for 7 days.
6. Before placing in the water, the cube must be

Aggregate is one of the basic constituents of concrete. Its quality is of considerable importance because about three-quarter of the volume of concrete is occupied by aggregates. One of the physical properties of aggregate that influence the property of concrete is the grading of aggregate. The grading of aggregate defines the proportions of particles of different size in the aggregate. The grading of fine (size < 5 mm) and coarse (size > 5 mm) aggregates are generally required to be within the limits specified in BS 882: 1992.…

There many things which make the production of on-site concrete aggravating. Bags of cement, sand, aggregate and possibly other additives must be delivered to the construction area. A supply of clean water is also necessary, along with a rented concrete mixing hopper. Even after all the dusty and heavy ingredients have been loaded into the hopper, there may occur the problem of erroneous water-cement ratio. One common solution to this messy and time-consuming problem is “READYMIX CONCRETE”.…

    Compaction of Concrete

Hand compaction: Hand compaction is done with the help of steel tamping rods, or timber screeds. Marrow and deep members are compacted with tamping rods. Thin slabs and floors are tamped with the help of screeds. Compaction should be done in layers of 30 cm for mass concrete and 15 cm for reinforced concrete. Companction should be carried out for such a time that a layer of mortar starts appearing at the compacted surface. Excessive compaction and under compaction both are harmful for concrete. Due to excessive compaction, C.A. particles sink to the bottom and cement and F.A. mortar appears at the top. This makes concrete structure heterogeneous, and hence affects strength. This method of curing is adopted in the case of precast members. It has been noticed that by keeping the wet conditions, if temperature is increased, the rate of increase of strength also increases. This enables concrete to acquire its full strength within short period and hence, curing is also finished within short period.…

Diameter and position of the reinforcement in concrete structures are important parameters for the evaluation of the durability and the stability of the building structures. A lot of samples are needed to assess the remaining life time and to determine the optimum date for rehabilitation of a building structure. A reliable durability analysis can be yield only by nondestructive testing methods. Even when detailed structural-drawings are available they often must be regarded as a useful tool by means of additional information about the structure under investigation. (Reinhardt, 1991)…

July 27, 2012, we performed our laboratory. We the second group, use crushed aggregates, cement, sand, water using Class A mixture. After mixing it we put it into the mold in three layers, each approximately one third of the volume of the mold. We rod each layer 25 strokes using tamping rod. After the top layers have been rodded , we strike off the surface of concrete to keep an excess of concrete above the top of the mold. We remove immediately the mold and measure the slump by examining the vertical difference between the top of the mold and the displaced original center of the top of the specimen. In the second test, we put same sample in the cylindrical surface mold. We do the same procedure on how to put it like in the slump test. The sample will be in the mold for 1 day and will be placed into the water for 15 days. We will need at least 28 days to present this sample to the BIP Geotechnical and Materials Testing Engineers and Water Supply at Bakakeng, Baguio City.…

“Compaction is the process which expels entrapped air from freshly placed concrete and packs the aggregate particles together so as to increase the density of concrete.” The aggregate particles, although coated with mortar, tend to arch against one another and are prevented from slumping or consolidating by internal friction. Compaction of concrete is, therefore, a two-stage process.…

Concrete mixtures can be designed to provide a wide range of mechanical and durability properties to meet the design requirements of a structure. The compressive strength of concrete is the most common performances measure used by engineer in designing buildings and other structures. The compressive strength is measured by breaking concrete specimen in a compression-testing machine. The compressive strength is calculated from the failure load divided by the cross-sectional area resisting the load and reported in units of N/mm2. Compressive strength test results are primarily used to determine that the concrete mixture as delivered meets the requirements of the specified strength, in the job specification. Compressive strength is often measured on a universal testing machine; these range from very small table top systems to ones with over 53 MN capacity. Measurements of compressive strength are affected by the specific test method and conditions of measurement. Compressive strengths are usually reported in relationship to a specific technical standard. When a specimen of material is loaded in such a way that it extends it is said to be in tension. On the other hand if the material compresses and shortens it is said to be in compression. On an atomic level, the molecules or atoms are forced apart when in tension whereas in compression they are forced together. Since atoms in solids always try to find an equilibrium position, and distance between other atoms, forces arise throughout the entire material which oppose both tension and compression. The phenomena prevailing on an atomic level are therefore similar. On a macroscopic scale, these aspects are also reflected in the fact that the properties of most common materials in tension and compression are quite similar. The major difference between the two types of loading is the strain which would have opposite signs for tensile and compression. Another major difference is tension tends to pull small…

Natural gravel and sand are usually dug or dredged from a pit, river, lake, or seabed. Crushed aggregate is produced by crushing quarry rock, boulders, cobbles, or large-size gravel. Once aggregates have been processed, the aggregates are handled and stored in a way that minimizes segregation and degradation and prevents contamination. Aggregates strongly influence concrete 's freshly mixed and hardened properties, mixture proportions, and economy. Consequently, selection of aggregates is an important process.…

In the past, the world of construction of buildings was based on wood, adobe, thatch and cave dwellings as construction materials or units. Modern engineering has developed to use the steel, concrete as basic elements of construction. Nowadays, there is a worldwide debate about which material of those two does reign supreme in the world of development. Most importantly, concrete and steel have different mechanical properties which cause a different behavior under the various conditions. A detailed comparison was done between concrete and steel in terms of safety, structural performance, cost and material availability as follows:…

This report describes a compression test on concrete columns. The main aim of the tests was to illustrate the ultimate strength limit state of reinforced concrete columns in combined bending and compression and to demonstrate the influence of slenderness on the ultimate load capacity. Test methods are described. It was found that the concrete columns exhibited complicated behaviour, and had a squash load point of 342.7KN and moment at 0 KN.m, a decompression point of 227.75 KN and moment at 2.92 KN.m, a balanced point (nominal) of 58.46 KN and moment at 3.81KN.m, a pure bending point of 0 KN and moment at 2.86 KN.m, a balanced point (actual) of 42.26KN and moment at 3.86KN.m.…
