Concert Report One: Marion Anderson String Quartet Concert I chose the genre string quartet and attended a concert at First Presbyterian church on October 19th, 2014. Because of its location the sanctuary where the concert took place had many stained glass windows. It was marvelous and in my opinion well suited the feel of classical music. The audience was very responsive and attentive. They applauded when the musicians appeared, in between pieces, and at the very end. They were quick to join in the sing along portion of the concert. Overall the people attending were an older crowd but you could tell they truly appreciated the music. The concert’s duration was around an hour and a half and was quite a surprising performance. I am very new to concert experiences, such as this, so I had no idea what to expect. I was thoroughly impressed by the ability of Marianne Henry, Nicole Cherry, Deidra Lawrence, and Prudence McDaniel, to create such a unified and powerful sound. The energy level of the musicians was extraordinary. They moved with music and felt every note. The glances exchanged between they showed their true enjoyment in what they were doing. All four of them were very concentrated and all consumed in the moment and the music. They came very well prepared if any mistakes were made it was most certainly never noticed by anyone. The string quartet consisted of a cello, two violins, and a viola. The Marion Anderson String Quartet played two pieces. The first, was Follow the Drinking Gourd by Jonathan B. McNair and the second, was a String Quartet in e minor composed by Frederick Delius. Both pieces were broken down into of four acts. The first piece also included tenor singer and narrator Chris Hoffman. Chris was very animated and excelled in keeping the audience’s attention as well as their participation. Both pieces were also written in the early 1900’s which would put them in the 20th century

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

The Oglethorpe University Singers and the Oglethorpe Chorale performed the concert at Conant Performing Arts Center on Friday, November 1, 2015, at 8 pm. The concert setting was smaller than the other venues we visited for previous concerts. The room was semi-lit, and classmates filled the concert hall. The concert conventions were not surprising as we have attended other concerts, and the conventions were the same. The Oglethorpe Singer and the Oglethorpe Chorale performance was excellent, they were in sync, and everyone did great. It was my first concert, and I was very impressed because they sounded like professional musicians.…

I enjoyed this concert very much because of all the different sounds that were being produced by the different instruments. It was a showcase of instruments by family so there was not an overwhelming clash of sounds. The dynamics ranged from very soft with the flutes to extremely loud with the drums. I could not hear any mistakes throughout the music so if there was everything sounded rhythmically connected and in tune. The instrument that stuck out the most to me was the tuba, surprisingly.…

The concert was labeled on youtube as a Bangladesh concert. The musical artists played Indian music, and there didn’t seem to be a composer. Every one just seemed to know how to play together. By being an active listener I learned that different cultures sometimes have very different musical styles. Most musical styles touch on all elements of SHMRGO. It was really neat to see how differently Indian music is put together. It’s obvious that they’re extremely talented musicians because they have to incorporate twice as many notes (semi-tones and quarter-tones) than whats typical to us, and they all did it so well. The type of instruments I think were used were the chordophones sitar, santoor, ektara, and the getnu. Also, I think either a bansuri, a venu, or a fiti was used (aerophones); and I’m almost positive that the dhad was played percussion wise. I think these instruments were played, but there were definitely a lot more instruments played than just these. The mood of concert definitely seemed like it was met to interpret happiness and excitement. As I mentioned, there was no one composer. However, the artists did communicate with each other through body language, and that was really interesting to watch play out.The Bangladesh concert performance was definitely interesting and educational, but for the most part it wasn’t pleasing to my ears, simply because I’m not accustomed to the style of music that was played. I completely respect the music that was played, and I honor that it’s different from the music that I listen to. To be frank, the pieces sounded like organized chaos. However, over it time it may become something I’d listen to for fun. Watching this concert definitely made me curious as to what different cultures think when they hear musical styles that are common to…

On Sunday, May 23, 1993 at 8:00 p.m. the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra performed four pieces by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The program included the Festival Overture on the Danish National Anthem, Op. 15, the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major, Op. 35, the Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48, and the Capriccio Italien, Op. 45. Geoffrey Simon conducted and William Barbini appeared as concertmaster and soloist. Although I was impressed by the whole concert, the second half made a more lasting impression on me.…

The musicians and the conductor did a great job; they were amazing and they all sounded professionals to me. I was able to know all the instruments they were playing because we have learned them in class; they were playing piccolo, flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, timpani, percussion, string bass, and piano.…

Bright stadium light gleamed, my feet rolled through the damp turf, all eyes were on us, and the spectators roared. This bustling evening in late August was what is commonly referred to as, Friday night lights. I was overwhelmed by the crowd's positive reaction and my performance level heightened. Contrary to want you may have pictured, I was not a part of the football team. I was a part of the Samuel Clemens Mighty Buffalo Marching Band, which performed the memorizing halftime show. Our show, entitled, “Wavelength,” was filled with swaying visuals, rotating circles, interlocking diagonals, musical runs, dynamic soloists, the whole kitchen sink. However, I did not just arrive at show time the day of the first football game. Weeks of hard work and tedious preparation went into that spectacular halftime show. As an overwhelmed freshman, who was having my first experience of marching band, those weeks were brutal, but it was during those weeks that band had its greatest effects on me. During those strenuous weeks I started from the basics and eventually worked to put on my very first performance, where I would discover a new found confidence. For the first…

The Igudesman & Joo: “Big Nightmare Music” concert premiered in Wright Auditorium on April 13th, 2012; accompanied by the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. Imagine Mozart taken over by Monty Python and you have some idea of the humor/seriousness created at the highest level of musicianship on stages around the world. Violinist Aleksey Igudesman, and pianist Hyung-ki Joo are both classically-trained artists who bring a show-stopping, unique approach to the concert performance. Igudesman & Joo strive to make classical music more popular with the public, and for them, the mix of music, comedy and theatre is its own art form. Comedic as well as musical virtuosi, they add a new light to classical music, mixing genres and styles with subtle doses of humor and theatrical elements. The comedic approach to their classical tunes might be irreverent, but they always treat the music with the utmost respect. Believe it or not, many of the classical music world’s biggest names are part of their biggest fan base. The concert included a variety of works by Igudesman & Joo, and everything was brought together with special thanks to the Greensboro symphony orchestra. From Mozart with Love begins the concert and it sets the classical tone with subtle entrances of the underlying James Bond theme for the comedic pass-off and duet. From the first piece to the last well known song “I Will Survive,” the concert has everything to keep even the non-classically aware viewers entertained.…

I watched The Killers in San Diego, California. Event was the Wrex the hall 2012 on December 7th. It was my first rock concert I had been too. I have been to reggae, rap and a few house dj concerts but never a rock. Definitely a different crowd comes to these events. For the majority they are mostly white Americans and they seem to be passionate about the music being played at the time. Not so much dancing but a lot more singing along with Brandon Flowers with some jumping up and down. From the events I have gone to this one was more passionate but I enjoy dancing a little so that is the only compliant I have about it.…
