I. Concert you attended (date, club/venue, name of artist): May 19, Jazz Alley, Thomas Marriott Quintet
II. Stylistic description of artist or group(s). If more than one, list each with a short description. The Quintet band members are Thomas Marriott as trumpet, Dawn Clement for Piano, Phill Sparks for bass, Mark Taylor for alto saxophone, and Matt Jorgensen for drums. The band is currently working on ‘Human Spirit’ project, which is blending diverse styles and genres by using classic instruments of the trumpet, saxophones and rhythm section. As a result, the band managed to deliver positive energy to the crowd.
III. Choose three tunes from the concert and provide brief commentary for each by comparing and contrasting the sound and style of each.

The tune ‘Hiding in Public’ was a slow, classic blues style of music. With its slow rhythm, they managed to add a long piano improvising, which added an extra layer to the music. Also, the tension that created from the delay was a nice touch to a tune. However, beside the piano improvisation, the rest of the tune sounded planned ahead. On the other hand, the tune ‘Side Walk’ was a creative and playful swing. Having a trumpet – saxophone duo was incredible. There was a huge improvised session where each musician had their improvised section. Even though there were some sections that seemed to be planned, but the whole tune showed band’s ability to improvise and rearrange the tune.
IV. Choose two soloists from the concert and write a brief review of their performances as if you were preparing it for a newspaper, magazine, or Internet blog. The amazing Thomas Marriott quintet did it again. On May 19, they had a concert at Jazz Alley,

A good electric guitar player is part of the group as well. They also at one point had a woman with a nice singing voice perform with them. She sing several songs with them. Next, I found out why they had the Bad New Jazz & Blues Orchestra again at the festival. In the band, one member acted as their conductor. Several individuals play saxophone. A couple of individuals plays horns. Three trumbones are involve, a woman sings well in the band and unlike Space Train had key board player in it. The trumpet players were good and I am not what you call a fan of them. In fact, I like the singing of this woman better than the singer in Space Train. It was very well organized orchestra. People in the audience must have agree because a couple…

For the first example, I went with my Scottish half and chose ‘Amazing Grace Bagpipes”. This video is of a company of bagpipers playing Amazing Grace at a funeral. The piece is played slowly (adagio). The dynamic level is initially moderately loud (mezzoforte), with the entire company playing three verses of the song. They end with a solo of just the first line, played softly (piano). The rhythm throughout the piece is slow (adagio). The theme is repeated three times, once per verse. The cadence is obvious, as the bagpipes pause at the end of each line, with a longer pause at the end of each verse. This version’s harmony reflects consonance, the tone is smooth and comforting. The texture is monophonic.…

The quintet consisted of Adam Heller, Kendall Fowler, Chandler Boyd, Dan Sitler, and Tim Henderson. They started off with Blue Train by the great John Coltrane. It had a steady tempo and a smooth sound. The trumpet played by Adam Heller stood out during this tune. It was a great piece that the audience enjoyed thoroughly. The next tune played by this quintet is So Dance Samba by A. C. Jobim. The piano played by Chandler Boyd starts the tune out beautifully. The drums played by Tim Henderson keep the fast beat and tempo. The sax played by Kendell Fowler played wonderfully along with the trumpet played by Adam Heller. Both of these talented musicians stood out. The trumpet took the lead for most of this piece, but the bass played by Dan Sitler and the piano still stood out at portions. This piece ended on a loud note. Their next tune is Grass Fed that was impressively created by their director Scott Routenberg in one day. This tune had a fast tempo and a happy feel. The trumpet played by Adam Heller and the sax played by Kendell Fowler stood out during most of this piece. It was a very impressive and appealing piece. I enjoyed each piece of this quintet’s…

They’re loud and hip. They pump up an audience, as they spew with energy. They keep the crowd going all night long. Who are these people? The answer might surprise some, as the group being referred to is the Doc Severinsen Big Band. What’s even more surprising is that the leader of this band, Doc Severinsen himself, is a respectable 86-years-old. Despite his old age, Severinsen managed to deliver a powerhouse show on October 22nd, in Eisenhower Auditorium.
