In this short work, it will be made an explanation about what is the Greek Promethean myth and the message behind this myth. It will also be made a comparison between this message and the subjacent theme of the “Modern Prometheus” in Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”. Looking at the main character of Mary Shelley’s novel, it will also be important to describe in what way, and according to the Greek Promethean myth, Victor Frankenstein is the “Modern Prometheus” as referred in the title of the book.

Greek Promethean myth

The Promethean myth first appeared in the late 8th-century BC Greek epic poet Hesiod's Theogony. He was a son of the Titan Iapetus, one of the Oceanids (keepers of the water).

In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a Titan whose name meant "forethought", and indeed, he was said to have the ability to look into the future. Prometheus was the creator of mankind. The goddess Athene taught him architecture, astronomy, mathematics, navigation, medicine, and metallurgy, and he in turn taught them to humans. Zeus, the chief of the Greek gods, became angry at Prometheus for making people powerful by teaching them all these useful skills. He is the younger brother of Atlas, who was banished to Tartarus during the Titanomachy. Prometheus, however, sided with the gods in the war, having foreseen their victory. Helios and Epimetheus also chose to defect. In doing so, Prometheus also tried to persuade his brother Atlas and their father Iapetus to side with the Olympians, but both of them ignored his attempts. After the Great War, Prometheus fashioned man from clay and

Zeus is the almighty. He is the "God of the sky," hurler of "thunder and lightning" for justice and morality in the universe. Aeschylus' play, Prometheus Bound is a direct attack against Zeus' actions, his tyranny, and his punishment for Prometheus, a fellow God. Aeschylus constructs this argument in his play through the use of secondary characters, their opinions, and their interactions with Prometheus as he is punished ultimately, for his great love of mankind. Love and hate, good and evil, justice and reason all take turns driving this story of the oppressed rising up and fighting for what they believe.…

Intelligence is not highly recognized in this society so as to sustain the control the council has over its citizens by manipulating the general population to have low intelligence. One of Prometheus’ main “sins” is that he is intellectually above all other citizens in the society. He is punished throughout his childhood for this transgression so he would grow up with the mentality that it was evil to be superior and that he should not use his abilities. “It was that the learning was too easy. That is a great sin, to be born with a head, which is too quick. It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior” (Rand 21). Prometheus has always been superior to his brothers, but to retain the power the government has over the people’s ways of thinking, the council has laws that enforce he must be like his brothers in every way. These laws include…

This is the first time that I have read Greek Myths. Frankly, I am fond of this much better than the Bible. Apparently, I can understand the Greek Myths easier than Bible stories. For example, when the Bible is talking about God’s kindness, it doesn’t write clearly and specifically, which sometimes makes me confused. In addition, God invariably does evil to people who don’t believe in him, so I really don’t understand his kindness. In the contrast, when the Greek story is talking about Prometheus’ kindness, it reads concretely. For instance, he created men, and took responsibility for his men. He made an attempt to perfect them, asking Athene for instincts, supreme gift, intelligence, asking Zephyrs for better living conditions, green grass,…
