Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations Case Study
CAFOs: an abbreviation seen in many agricultural debates, stands for concentrated (confined) animal feeding operations. A concentrated animal feeding operation is defined as a factory farm that raises large amounts of animals in containment, and all must meet requirements and be registered. Classifying as a registered CAFO requires that the operation meet certain requirements, such as a number of confined animals, for example, at least 2,500 swine, 1,000 head of cattle, 125,000 chickens or 10,000 sheep or lambs (Edelson, Mat). With these large amounts of animals confined in an area, it has caused for great amounts of controversy and large involvement from the government. The need of greater supply led to the development of factory farms and more importantly concentrated animal feeding operations. Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) hold hundreds upon thousands of animals in a contained area. The amount of animals held in an area depends on the species, for instance, a registered dairy cow CAFO has at least 700 head whereas with swine the headcount is at least 2500 (“Animal Feeding Operations”). In each of the operations, only one species is held meaning that each operation has their own focus. For example, there are poultry CAFOs, dairy cow CAFOs, and beef cattle CAFOs. With these large amounts of animals confined in one area, this has led to multiple types of controversy such as animal welfare and pollution. Though there are these many controversies, many farmers, as well as other United States citizens, fight for the need of the use of CAFOs.
Main Pro CAFOs Argument: Supply and Demand

Placed in these different locations presents different problems, many complain about the smell alone disrupting living, along with emissions from the CAFOs being potential dangers to one’s health. Shown in assessments of air quality, in different communities around CAFOs, there are concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia that exceeded different agencies recommendations (Donham).     Over the last few decades farming animals for food has grown and evolved into a highly efficient, streamlined industry known as factory farming. Factory farms are owned and operated by big corporations, and despite the fact they make up only a small percentage of farms in the United States, they are responsible for most of the meat and eggs we consume here (Sierra Club, 2005). In factory farming, baby piglets are castrated without anesthesia and thrown into a pen, where they huddle in a corner writhing in pain. Egg laying chickens are crammed four or five to a cage (45x50cm) for their entire lives. They cannot spread their wings or stretch out in any way, and they never see daylight. To prevent them from pecking at one another, their beaks are brutally burnt or sliced to a stub. To produce veal, newborn calves are confined in small crates and restrained to allow a minimum of movement until they are slaughtered at just five months old. Factory farmed animals are treated like non-living commodities, suffering horrendous cruelties to produce the maximum profit at the least amount of cost. In recent years public awareness about factory farming conditions has grown, and so have concerns over animal cruelty and public health. The general public should not tolerate animal cruelty in the factory farming industry because it is extremely inhumane to animals and it represents a growing health hazard for human beings; instead, consumers should put pressure on the industry to change the way animals are treated and to ensure farms do not pose a threat to public health.…

    Both families spent similar amounts of money on proteins and on fresh fruits and vegetables, for example. The Casaleses spent $69.43 on protein costs and $44.21 on fresh produce, while the Revises spent $69.43 on protein and $41.07 on fresh fruits and vegetables. The major difference lies, however, on the percent of processed foods and fresh produce they ingested. While 23% of the Casaleses groceries were fresh fruits and vegetable and only 6% were processed foods, the Revises only had 12% fresh produce and a whopping 36% processed foods (even after deciding to eat healthier). In my opinion, this is a clear example of how the US market focuses more on processed food than fresh produce. Not only are processed foods cheaper and easier to come by, but they are also greatly advertised and distributed. Vending machines, fast foods, the media and print commercials all encourage shoppers to get processed products, and we let them brainwash us. Another similarity between them is that they ingest well beyond the average weekly amount of protein they need. For example, the amount of protein that is normal for people to ingest is from 322 to 392 grams per week. Both families were well beyond with the Casaleses eating approximately 594 grams and the Revises 472 grams per person.
