Chapter one

Computer virus

COMPUTER VIRUS

A computer virus is a computer program that can replicate itself and spread from one computer to another. The term "virus" is also commonly, but erroneously, used to refer to other types of malware, including but not limited to adware and spyware programs that do not have a reproductive ability.

Malware includes computer viruses, computer worms, ransomware, Trojan horses, keyloggers, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest adware, malicious BHOs and other malicious software. The majority of active malware threats are usually trojans or worms rather than viruses. Malware such as trojan horses and worms is sometimes confused with viruses, which are technically different: a worm can exploit security vulnerabilities to spread itself automatically to other computers through networks, while a trojan horse is a program that appears harmless but hides malicious functions. Worms and trojan horses, like viruses, may harm a computer system's data or performance. Some viruses and other malware have symptoms noticeable to the computer user, but many are surreptitious or simply do nothing to call attention to themselves. Some viruses do nothing beyond reproducing themselves.

Virus’s Classification

Classification

In order to replicate itself, a virus must be permitted to execute code and write to memory. For this reason, many viruses attach themselves to executable files that may be part of legitimate programs. If a user attempts to launch an infected program, the virus' code may be executed simultaneously. Viruses can be divided into two types based on their behaviour when they are executed. Non-resident viruses immediately search for other hosts that can be infected, infect those targets, and finally transfer control to the application program they infected. Resident viruses do not search for hosts when they are started. Instead, a resident virus loads itself

A computer virus attaches itself to a program or file enabling it to spread from one computer to another, leaving infections as it travels. Like a human virus, a computer virus can range in severity: some may cause only mildly annoying effects while others can damage your hardware, software or files. Almost all viruses are attached to an executable file, which means the virus may exist on your computer but it actually cannot infect your computer unless you run or open the malicious program. It is important to note that a virus cannot be spread without a human action, (such as running an infected program) to keep it going.…

    A. Is a Virus Alive? 1. Viruses are segments of nucleic acids contained in a protein coat. 2. Pathogens are agents that cause disease. 3. Viruses do not grow, do not have homeostasis, and do not metabolize, therefore scientists don’t consider them to be living. 4. Discovery of Viruses i. Scientists filtered bacteria from the sap of infected plants, and were surprised to find that the filtered sap could still cause uninfected plants to become infected. ii. In 1935, Wendell Stanley of the Rockefeller Institute purified tobacco mosaic virus. The crystallized the purified virus, and concluded that TMV is a chemical rather than an organism. B. Viral Structure 1. The virus protein coat, or capsid, may contain either RNA or DNA, but not both. 2. Many viruses, such as the influenza virus, have a membrane, or envelope, surrounding the capsid. 3. The envelope consists of proteins, lipids, and glycoproteins, which are proteins with attached carbohydrate molecules. 4. Viruses exist in a variety of shapes, from rods, spheres, polyhedral figures, etc. 5. Viruses that infect bacteria are called bacteriophages. C. Viral Reproduction 1. Lytic Cycle i. In bacterial viruses, the cycle of viral infection, replication, and cell destruction is called the lytic cycle. 2. Lysogenic Cycle i. In the lysogenic cycle, the viral genome replicates without destroying the host cell. ii. During an infection, some viruses stay inside the cells but do not make new viruses. Instead of producing virus particles, the viral gene is inserted into the host chromosomes and is called a provirus. 3. Host Cell Specificity i. Viruses are often restricted to certain kinds of cells. For example, TMV can infect tobacco and related plants, but not animals. Scientists hypothesize this specificity may be due to the viruses’ origin. 4. Structure of HIV-an Enveloped Virus i. Many viruses that infect only animals, such as influenza, have an exterior viral envelope. ii. In many cases, the viral envelope is composed of a…

A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself[1] and infect a computer. The term "virus" is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware, adware, and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability. A true virus can only spread from one computer to another (in some form of executable code) when its host is taken to the target computer; for instance because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive. Viruses can increase their chances of spreading to other computers by infecting files on a network file system or a file system that is accessed by another computer.[2][3]…

In computer technology, viruses are vicious software programs, a form of malware. Viruses exist on local disk drives and spread from one computer to another through the sharing of the infected files. Regular methods for spreading viruses include floppy disks, FTP file transfers, and copying files between shared network drives. Once installed on a computer, a virus may change or remove application and system files. Some viruses can leave a computer inoperable; others just display startling screen messages to innocent users.…

    Computer Worms

Computer worms are classified as a type of computer virus, but there are several characteristics that distinguish computer worms from regular viruses. A major difference is the fact that viruses spread through human activity (running a program, opening a file and such) while computer worms have the ability to spread automatically without human initiation. In addition to being able to spread without a person, computer worms have the ability to self-replicate. This means that a worm can create more than one copy of itself to send to other computers. This often happens through the sending of chain e-mails to infected users’ email contacts. What is a worm intended to do? It depends on the person who created the worm. Usually a worm is created to gather personal information from a host. It may also create what we call a ‘backdoor’, which lets the creator of the worm to control the host or simply delete all data from it.…

One technique that antivirus programs use to identify a virus is to look for virus is to look for virus signatures, or virus definitions, which are known specific patterns of virus code. According to Shelly and Cashman (Antivirus programs), many vendors of antivirus programs allow registered users to update virus signature files automatically from the Web at no cost for a specified time. Updating the antivirus program’s signature file regularly is important, because it will download any new virus definitions that have been added since the last updates.…
