Computer Aided Instruction in Mathematics
1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Way back from the early years, computer is just a computing device which is used for business establishments in computing large numbers. And if you’re the user of this computer, you may find yourself bored.

Through the rapid development of the computer industry, there are several studies conducted just to improve the computer technology. And one of the results of these studies is the Multimedia System.

In generic, Multimedia is simply the use of many media. Thus, a speaker making a presentation using a slide projector and VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) is giving multimedia presentation.

Today however, the word “Multimedia” is generally meant to apply to a broad spectrum of computer-related products and processes.

Multimedia is defined as a computer-based, interactive experience that incorporates text, graphics, sound, animation, video and virtual reality.

Multimedia elements includes text, graphics, sound, animation, video and virtual reality. A fundamental feature of multimedia is interactivity; it is the ability of the user to interact with an application. It makes the user more active rather than passive. Fundamental to the development and delivery of multimedia is a computer system capable of incorporating multimedia elements such as sounds and animation. Computer Aided Instruction is one example of a Multimedia System.

Computer Aided Instruction is an instruction material presented by a computer. Computer Aided Instructions either present information or fill a tutorial role and testing the student for comprehension. By providing one-on-one interaction and producing immediate response to input answers. Computer Aided Instruction allows users to demonstrate mastery and learn new material at their own pace. A disadvantage is that computerized instruction cannot extend the lesson beyond the limits of the programming. That's why; the proponents come up with the creation of a Computer Aided Instruction System for Children.

The Child is one of the most important assets of the nation. Every effort should be exerted to promote his welfare and enhance his opportunities for a useful and happy life [PRESIDENTIAL DECREE NO. 603, Article 1].

Children at young ages, nowadays are prone to different kind of Computer Activities, like using of Social Networking, playing Online Games, and many more.

The potential impact of computer use on children can be significant. It can help them in doing their assignments, communicating with their relatives abroad and many more.

Children are much more on exploring things. That’s why; we must lead them in everything they do, especially in using computers, because there are some websites and games that are not suitable for very young users. Because of that, strong parental guidance is recommended.

The proponents choose the Sambahang Kristiano sa Marulas Christian Academy (SKMCA), because it has a mission of empowering education for students and live their life in fearing of God.

Sambahang Kristiano sa Marulas Christian Academy (SKMCA) is a non-profitable school runs by the Church since 2001. It is administer by Pastor Alberto A. Tiquia. The school is affiliated with Valenzuela Association of Private School and Administrators (VALAPSA). Every year they upgrade their elementary levels, one year at a time. Now they already have Grade5.

Sambahang Kristiano sa Marulas Christian Academy (SKMCA) conduct regular activities such as “Nutrition Month”, “Buwan ng Wika”. “Christmas Fellowship” and “Field trips” or “Educational Tours”. The school also joins outside events like “Battle of the Brain”, an interschool competition among private schools.
As a part of the Computer technology, CAI aims to make teaching become more visually attractive using different cut out materials is a waste of time, money and the material itself. In using CAI the can easily understand by the student, because it will boost the students’ interest in studying academically and perform better to gain a higher grade.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

1.2.1 General Problem

How to create a Computer Aided Instruction that will help the teachers make their students interested in studying?

Some children ages 4-6 are not that eager in studying or going to school. At young ages they still love to play. Feeling boring and doing nothing inside the classroom makes a child uninterested on what the teacher is discussing. If a child felt boring on the discussion, at the end of the day it may lead to learn nothing.

1.2.2 Specific Problems

1.2.2.1 How will the proposed system help the teachers in making their lectures more fun?

Children love playing. They usually ask their parents to read a book for them until they fell asleep. Long time of sitting and listening makes them uninterested.

1.2.2.2 How will the proposed system help the students to easily understand their lesson?

Children have different kind of intellectual level. A child can be: Visual-learner; Kids like to see and read what they are learning. They often have to write things down to retain the information. Auditory: Kids like to listen and hear what they are learning. They often have to hear the spelling of a word several times before they retain the information. They like rhyme and music.
Kinesthetic (or bodily-kinesthetic): Kids have good fine motor skills. They are often very good at sports and have good balance. They like to touch things and take them apart.

1.2.2.3 How will the proposed system help the teachers to motivate the students to interact to the lesson?

It’s hard to approach students to join to discussion. Some of them are shy, maybe because, their parents taught them not to talk to strangers.
The kids will sure to enjoy the proposed system because it has many features such as games, quizzes, and activities.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.3.1 General Objective

To be able to help teachers enhance their teaching skills using a Computer Aided Instruction System.

Getting the attention of the students using a CAI which is a Multimedia System is the best way to enhance their teaching skills. Because some of its feature is memorable and easy to understand because of its animated images, hearing sounds and games. 1.3.1 Specific Objectives

1.3.1.1 To be able to create a system that will use sounds and animation.

Having sounds and animations in the proposed system makes children enjoy their learning and attracts their interest in using the proposed system.

1.3.1.2 To be able to create a system that will have an activity or mini game.

This feature will help the student to learn unknowingly. Using a game that is connected to the lecture is a good example.

1.3.1.3 To be able to create a system that will use interactivity.

Using interactivity students can interact to their lessons unconsciously. Using interactivity students can interact attentively in the proposed system. Students also can express themselves through interactivity.
Interactivity is the ability of the user to interact with an application. It makes the user more active rather than passive.

1.4 Significance of the Study
1.4.1 Teacher
The proposed system will help the teacher to guide the students to understand their given lesson. By this study they will come up with easier and powerful program. 1.4.2 Students
This system will give the needs of the students and benefits of quality education. It also helps the students to familiarize for using a Computer Aided Instruction. This system is designed to help students to improve their academic skills.
1.4.3 Proponents
This study will help the proponents to enhance the ability on how to create an understandable computerized system in an easy way. This will serve to the proponents as a challenge to do a better system. 1.4.4 Researchers
This study gives knowledge to the researcher on how to create a Computerized System in understandable way. This will serve as a fresh ground for the researcher whose study will be related in the field of Information Technology.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

The Computer Aided Instruction for pre-school will feature the instructional material that will be presented through the components of multimedia. This incorporates text, graphics, sound, animation and video.

Lessons or topics will be presented in two ways: through text with some picture representation and animation and graphics, these entire features are all interactive.

At the end of every lesson and chapters, a quiz will be given in a random format and will give an immediate feedback to the user itself so that the user itself can determine his/her strengths and weaknesses and it can give concentrated efforts in order to overcome his weaknesses before moving to the next topic or lesson.

All these features provide a user-friendly messages and interfaces so that the user can easily manipulate the system.

The limitation of the system is that it would only be centered on the basic subjects of the student which is mathematics. The lesson will only base on the book that the teachers recommend for usage.

The students may take the quiz simultaneously and the teacher may get their scores in the score board.
