Competition Is Healthy.
Competition: Good or Bad?

Competition is something that everyone has experienced in his or her life; it is human nature. In school, students compete with classmates to finish first or to make better grades. In a workplace, colleagues compete to receive promotions and raises. In the business world, companies compete to create the top products. Competition is a part of everyday life, and it is healthy. It helps people to improve, it leads to better products and results, and it promotes growth. Competition helps people to improve. For someone to win, someone else has to lose. If a person views loss with a positive attitude, they can use that as a way to learn from their mistakes and try harder. By taking the competition out of it, it will take away a reason for a person to improve. Communism is a real example of what happens when society erases competition. Communist countries treat their people equally, and there are no social classes. The State owns everything; the people own nothing except for the clothes on their back. This results in people being less goal oriented. Why work hard for something when in the end, they will earn nothing? Competition leads to better products and results. Competition between companies often leads to more options, lower prices, and better quality of products. It is good in the marketplace not only for businesses, but consumers as well. It benefits businesses by driving companies to be more creative and to make improvements. It benefits customers by keeping the prices low and the quality of the products high. Apple and Android are examples of two competing companies. Both sell phones, tablets, and other electronic devices. They are constantly trying to better their products in creative and new ways in order to sell them. As a result, consumers have more options to choose from. Competition promotes growth. Without competition and rivals, I would not have taken the chances or learned the lessons that I have. One of my favorite

Competition is generally regarded as being positive, bringing benefits in particular to customers. The advantages of competition are based on the fact that, in order to gain market share, firms need to offer the cheapest or the best quality products to customers. This requires them to operate as efficiently as possible, in a cost effective way while at the same time improving the quality of products and services as much as possible. However, competition also has some negative. Where competition is based solely on price, product quality might be sacrificed because resources that are devoted to competing with other firms, such as the huge amounts spent on advertising and packaging, could be directed to producing cheaper or better products. Also, competition between firms means that, inevitably, some businesses will be forced out of the market, with the economic and human consequences of redundancy and unemployment. Finally, the competitive process tends to mean that successful established businesses gradually take over, for example Nestle…

Competition can help kids learn how to win and lose gracefully. Many people believe that competition is good for kids and some people have even written books about what they think about competition. According to Po Bronson, author of book Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing, “If kids don’t learn to lose they’re going to feel entitled to win,” said Bronson. “They’re also going to make a connection that fear of losing is going to prevent them from taking the risk in the first place. And what kids do need to learn is losing is not that big a deal. They need to learn to lose and go ‘Oh, whatever,’ and move on and keep playing.(“Why Competition Can Be Healthy”). If kids learned how to win and lose gracefully, then there probably wouldn’t…

However, competition can be very healthy because it motivates and fuels the passion for success. Having people who are better than you can help to make you desire to go above and beyond. Harrison Bergeron believed this because he himself was a very extraordinary individual. In the short story it explains, "The musicians scrambled back into their chairs, and Harrison stripped them of their handicaps, too. 'Play your best,' he told them, 'and I'll make you barons and dukes and earls.'" Harrison wanted the world to be a free, happy, and flourishing place. He made sure that everyone would try their hardest in order to be the very best they could be. He could have been a very strong and just leader for the United States because he had fantastic morals and had his priorities in tact.…

This confusion embodied itself into a mountainous, far-reaching wall, and I had miraculously found a ladder in which to overcome the blockade and transport myself into a plain of understanding. Once I reached the other side, I realized how lonesome it was, and it isolated me from the rest of my class. I do not favor a position of being the only person who does well in an environment; I believe withholding knowledge for the sake of being the only person who can excel is a corrupt logical stance. A disheartening multitude of individuals in school wish to compete with me in academics and other means, but I am a firm believer that we can all win by elevating each other and working together. There is more to life than trying to be the “best,” and the notion that a singular person is somehow “best” in all aspects due to grades alone is absurd. The only person I compete with is myself, and I do not compare my own worth by using other’s accomplishments as a template, because we all face differing…

Many businessmen in high positions and company executives are in favor of competition, stating that it makes people work harder. This is because these businessmen are part of larger companies, so they do not have as fierce of a competition surrounding their workplaces. Even though competition might make people work harder in order to survive in the world of business, it also causes “competition [to be] inefficient and wasteful because it leads to the duplication of effort” (Fang 1229). Since competition is becoming increasingly more fierce, people are becoming more secretive as they “fear being scooped by their rivals” (Fang 1229), decreasing the essential practice of teamwork. By not sharing their work, people are slowing down businesses by doing the same work since no one wants to share their findings or cooperate for fear of losing out on profit. The academic journal by the American Society for Microbiology states that in the field of science, “competition discourages sharing and may even lead some scientists to sabotage competitors, perform biased peer review, and engage in questionable research practices” (Fang 1229). Instead of encouraging teamwork, the Houston Chronicle states that competition “can create unhealthy rivalries that result in workers resenting one another, which is especially true if one person or team always wins the competitions”…

The role of competition is basically any two species that need the same limited resources. For example, the weeds growing in a garden are competing with garden plants for soil nutrients. There are some competitions like two animals fighting each other to see who would be the best in order to get a specific territory. When it comes to two animals fighting it reminds us of ourselves fighting each other to see who would win. For example all the wars we had surpassed, countries fighting other countries to claim land. Competition and natural selection go side by side just as written in my fist paragraph the strongest will survive in order to reproduce and to make a strong community; just like in wars, the strongests armies wins and claims there rightful…

We also tend to compare the people around us to others. Life becomes a game of who can be the “best.” However, everyone has a different view of what the best is. Even if you did congratulate a classmate or friend on their success, in the back of your mind you are thinking about how you will be compared to them, or comparing yourself to them. Being threatened by people around us is understandable, because we are being directly affected. There is direct relationships, thus we are more apt to compare ourselves and others. Jealousy is a huge factor in the realm of success. Competitiveness is also something that isn’t usually manageable as a person, it’s human nature.
