1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
2.0 INDUSTRY FORECAST: OUTLOOK AND TRENDS IN DATA
The macro environment in which the MP3 player industry operated during 2005 was by large shaped by the individual MP3 companies recognizing and responding to unmet needs of a trend that was largely boosted by Apple: Their innovative response to creating a solution for music lovers and their busy lives. In order to break down and evaluate the marketing plan that was used in launching the Microsoft Zune and its product line, one must first identify the “four P’s” of the product. The Four P’s stand for product, price, placement and promotion. The product in the principles of marketing is described as a “need-satisfying market offering”. Although the Apple iPod was already on the market, it was the only of its kind. At one point since they were the only company in the industry that made MP3 players, there was no choice and no competition. In other words Apple had the market cornered. Therein was the need, the need to give consumers another option, a less expensive option with just as many if not more features as the Apple iPod. Soon after other companies came up their own version of MP3 player but the Microsoft Zune has held steady as one of the leading suppliers since its debut in late 2006.…

Competition amongst sellers of MP3 Players: There are over 100 manufacturers of MP3 players, which all offer a similar product, so rivalry is generally strong in the industry. Differentiation by branding is very important and a constant launch of fresh actions is required to improve market standing (e.g. by introducing new products or adding new technical features to improve user friendliness). Apple is currently the dominant market leader (market share ca. 65-80 %) and follows a powerful competitive strategy. However, this increases the competitive pressures on the rivals of Apple, which are fighting to win a bigger stake in the growing market by winning new customers, expanding to new regions and taking away market shares from Apple.…

The two companies that will be the focus of this paper are Anheuser-Busch Companies and Coors Brewing Company (Coors). As of 2009, these two companies held 50.4 percent and 10.8 percent of the U.S. beer market, respectively[1]. The compound annual growth rate of the market value of the U.S. beer industry between 2005 and 2009 was 0.4 percent, reaching $77.6 billion in 2009, while the market volume grew at an even lower 0.2 percent reaching a volume of 24 billion liters.[2] Until 2002, the three major players within the industry, Anheuser-Busch, Coors and Miller Brewing Company, were domestically owned and together earned 75 percent of the industry revenues. This paper focuses on the U.S. beer industry and competitive strategies of two focal companies Anheuser-Busch and Coors, prior to 2009, before global giant InBev acquired Anheuser-Busch. Despite the dominant position of Anheuser-Busch, the different strategies pursued by these two organizations will draw different reactions from each firm, should a significant event impact them. This report highlights the differences in those reactions by (1) presenting an overall view of…

The Apple iPod has changed the face of the portable music player industry over the last few years. It has been so successful that it is thought to be as influential as the Sony Walkman was in the 1980 's.1 In fact, over one-hundred ten million iPods (110,000,000) have been sold over the last six years.2 The highly popular digital music store and library, iTunes, also plays a big role in iPod 's success by making digital music cheap and easy-to-access. The big question is: How will Apple continue to be an industry leader in the increasingly competitive MP3 player market? In this paper we will analyze Apple 's financial position, current strategies, strengths, weaknesses, and competition in the MP3 player industry. We will then use this analysis to recommend a strategic plan for Apple to follow for the next five to ten years.…
