The field of psychology has increasingly emphasized the importance of professional competencies over the past decade. This shift has included the increased integration of competency based training, education, and related benchmarks for the attainment of professional competencies. Psychologists and psychologists-in-training are encouraged to engage in ongoing education and self-assessment related to professional competencies.

What does it mean to you to be a competent professional and why is this ethically important? How will you assess your competence? How will you maintain your competence? Discuss the importance of self-awareness of personal life experiences, including their emotional influence on perceptions of legal issues and professional ethics in assessment of your competence. According to readings practitioner’s competence is defined as the ability to perform according to the standards of the profession. Being competent in one area of counseling does not automatically make one proficient in another area. Practitioners can develop competence both as a generalist and specialist. Generalist can work in broad ranges of issues and a specialist works in a particular area. From ethical standpoints competence is required in order to provide protection and services to clients. Assessment approaches are effective when both formative and summative evaluations are integrated. Together the assessments focus on strengths and provide information to assist in educational plans (Corey 2008). It is important that all clients receive proper treatment. Some cases will be harder than others, however not all difficult case should be referred. It is the practitioner’s job to be able to make objective and honest assessment of when to refer and when not to refer.
