Establishing a Safe and Healthy Learning Environment
Competency Goal 1
To establish a safe, healthy, learning environment

Functional Area 1: Safe
One of my goals in the functional area of safe is to prevent or reduce injuries on the playground while children are in my care. This is an important goal for the preschool age group because young children are unaware of the hazards in the outdoor environment and of behaviors that could cause them harm. I can accomplish this by being aware of the areas that are “hazardous” and making sure that I am supervising all children accurately. I always make sure children are where I can have visual and auditory contact on them. I routinely check to make sure all the outside equipment is free from hazardous materials, i.e. free of deterioration, splinters, rust, openings that are 3.5”-9”, and checking that slides don’t have open areas where string could cause strangulation.
Functional Area 2: Healthy
One of my goals in the functional area of healthy is to model the importance of proper hygiene. I feel this is an important goal for preschool children because young children do not understand that good hygiene is the best way to avoid spreading infections and diseases. One of the ways I do this is by washing my hands before helping the children open their lunches, after coming in from outside, and any other time that my hands may be dirty. I help the children to properly wash their hands by incorporating hand washing techniques into my lesson planning (I have songs that they can sing, so that they are washing their hands for at least 20 seconds). I also make sure that children are using their own bedding. I sanitize and wash bedding weekly. I disinfect toys that may have been coughed and sneezed on immediately and wash or sanitize the rest of the toys biweekly. I request that parents bring healthy foods for their children’s lunches as well as removing allergens such as peanut butter. I sit with the children and model good eating habits.

My goal in this functional area is to keep children safe at all times by supervising them constantly and establishing class rules that will help children stay safe. The class rules related to this functional area will be walk in the classroom, keep your hands to yourself, and stay in the classroom at all times. I will teach children why these class rules are so important as well. In addition to these rules I will teach my students basic safety measures like stranger danger, only cross the road with an adult, and only leave the classroom with an adult. I will also inspect my student’s outdoor and indoor environments before the children come in, in the morning and throughout the day as the children participate in activities. It is important to inspect these places because children can be injured by broken toys and playground equipment. It is also important to teach children these basic safety measures because children don’t always understand how dangerous some of the things they do are.…

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each child’s physical needs. Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times by sight and sound even during nap times. Making sure all outlets are covered so children can’t access them. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets. I am certified in First Aid and CPR, which makes me knowledgeable of caring for accidents or injuries.…

When planning an activity all children have the right to be safe in their learning environment and as the teacher or teaching assistant it is your job to ensure the safety of every child whether working indoors and outdoors is of the highest priority. This is done by identifying the hazards and risks in all situations. It is also a legal requirement to make sure the children are safe this can be done by ensuring the five major hazards are considered, these are; Physical, Security, Fire, Personal and Food safety (each is explained in greater detail in the following paragraphs). Filling in risk assessments ensures the potential risks and hazards to the children are considered and measures taken to reduce the risk if they are considered unsafe for all activities from school residential trips to using glue guns. When supervising children it is important to be aware of the risks children can be exposed to in order to keep them safe and we must take their age and the child’s individual needs into account, this is because a younger or disabled child are more likely to have accidents as they are most likely to have not yet got a full awareness of danger. I know I never listened to them when it came to staying clean and keeping me healthy when I was younger and lived at home. cards are kept, he notices that Lennie has something in his pocket as well: a dead mouse. Lennie explains that he likes to pet the mouse’s soft fur as he walks. George takes the mouse from Lennie and throws it into the bushes. He then admonishes Lennie for his behavior, warning him not to behave badly, as he has done so often in the past, and ordering him not to say a word when they meet the boss at the new ranch. He reminds Lennie of past misadventures, specifically an episode in the town of Weed in which Lennie assaulted a woman in a red dress because he thought her dress was pretty and wanted to feel it. The woman accused Lennie of attempting to rape her and George and Lennie had to run for their lives out of town. While recounting this incident, George complains that if he didn’t have to take care of Lennie he could live a normal life: “I could live so easy and maybe have a girl” (7).…

Providing a safe environment for my infants and toddlers is very important to me. I make sure they feel safe and secure when they see my smiling face. I make sure they feel that way throughout their day. To keep the children safe I inspect the centers in my classroom to make sure there are no broken toys or trash that they can put in their mouths. With young, mobile infants and toddlers you must stay on your feet at all time to make sure they stay safe and out of harm way. While the children are in my care I teach them the proper way to wash their hands by washing mines as well. I make sure to remind them to constantly wash their hands to prevent germs from spreading. They wash their hands before they eat, after using the restroom and after coming off the playground.…
