When you think of an event do you think of the before or after, or do you compare them? In Thomas Hardy 's poem "The Convergence of the Twain: (Lines on the Loss of the Titanic)" he compares the intent of the original areas within the ship purpose to the current location at the bottom of the ocean; in addition to the fate of the ship and the iceberg. The Titanic was known to be the largest and most luxurious ship of its day. It was considered by its builders to be unsinkable however in April 1912 she struck an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the ocean taking hundreds of lives with her. By coincidence this was also the same year that Hardy losses first wife, Emma Lavinia Gifford, due to sudden death (BBC). An analysis of the "The Convergence of the Twain: (Lines on the Loss of the Titanic)" reveals that vanity in addition to poor construction , and the perfect construction of the iceberg led to the fate of the Titanic; as seen through the eyes of a mourning man.
Hardy begins his poem by comparing the loss of the ship with his own experience of losing his wife, both suddenly. Most of us would agree losing someone or something suddenly is far more traumatic, then simply losing someone or something in there due time. Both his wife and the Titanic had a great life planned for them; however, "The Immanent Will” had other plans. Throughout his poem one can deduce the comparison between the loss of the ship and the loss of his wife.
While it was no secret of the construction of the Titanic and her to sister ships, the Olympic and the Britannic; it was also no secret of the vanity put into these ships. Hardy illustrates from the very beginning that the vanity that was put in to the Titanic was going to seal its fate. The Bible speaks of the pride before destruction in Proverbs 16:18 "pride

“Titanic” is written in blank verse and uses a more casual diction. This helps identify with more people in today’s society, to whom the speaker is trying to identify with. His ideals are brought into light with the second stanza which mentions the fact that not only is it the fate of everyone to die; many have to do it alone. The idea is frightening for anyone; however, the speaker seems to take comfort by imagining the atmosphere of the ship before its final moments. By mentioning the “crowds of people, friends, servants...” (5-6), the speaker drives in the point that being able to spend your last days on earth in such fanfare is something worth romanticizing for. The exclamatory “Ah!”(6), further brings the speaker’s desire to focus.…

    Diving Into the Wreck

Rich uses the images of preparing for a dive into a shipwreck to symbolize how one must prepare oneself for the journey of relooking at a painful memory. In order to prepare for the dive, the speaker of the poem “read[s] the book of myths, load[s] the camera and check[s] the edge of the knife blade” (1-3). By reading the book of myths, people must familiarize themselves with the false memories that they have created to protect themselves from the pain of the experience. People must also be willing to record the truth of the event and capture its reality, which is symbolized by the camera. As well, people must have a way to let go and release the event from the past, which can be done by the knife blade. In the poem, she also puts on her protection from the sea, the “body-armor of black rubber” (5) and the “grave and awkward mask” (7). Just as donning this protection, people try to protect themselves from the pain that they may encounter by taking this journey. Although the mask is awkward, it is also a way for one to look more clearly at what they will encounter. The facts will no longer be blurred. The “ladder...hanging close to the side of the schooner” (14-16) is a way to descend down into the depths of the water. It represents the method of descending down into the memories we have hidden. The ladder can be descended rung by rung, step by step. One cannot just throw oneself into the journey; they must…

Also, the crew members tried to tell the captain about the iceberg but the captain ignored them and told them to “shut up”. However, out of the many women that died on the ship, Miss Emily Badman, 18 years old, survived the Titanic.…

The Titanic is more emotionally appealing to me. “The Convergence of Twain” was dark and wasn’t as appealing to me. “Titanic” used works to make the story seen tragic, but its denotation of the words made the deaths of many seem quick. The word choice seemed as if the author tried to help me cope with the deaths of the people of the Titanic. “Titanic “made me feel like I lost someone in the horrific crash. The poem was short and straight to the point.…
