Comparison of the Performance of Two Direct Wave Energy Conversion Systems: Archimedes Wave Swing and Power Buoy

Department of Electrical Engineering, Islamic Azad University, Najafabad Branch, Najafabad, Isfahan, Iran Abstract: Many wave energy conversion devices have not been well received. The main reasons are that they are too complicated and not economical. However, in the last two decades direct conversion systems have drawn the attention of researchers to their widely distributed energy source due to their simple structure and low cost. The most well-known direct conversion systems presently in use include the Archimedes Wave Swing (AWS) and Power Buoy (PB). In this paper, these two systems were simulated in the same conditions and their behaviors were studied in different wave conditions. In order to verify the simulations, results of the generator of the finite element computations were followed. An attempt was made to determine the merits and drawbacks of each method under different wave conditions by comparing the performance of the two systems. 1 Introduction1
Various methods for converting a wave’s energy into electrical energy have been introduced since 1799, but most of these methods have not been well received. Two of the reasons for this are that they are too complicated and not economical. Therefore, scientists turned their attention to other renewable energy sources such as wind energy because utilizing them is more economical.     Covering over 70% of the planet’s area, the Earth’s oceans could potentially be utilized as a source of virtually inexhaustible renewable energy. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a method that employs naturally occurring temperature differences between warm surface water and colder deep seawater. To be effective a minimum temperature difference between the ocean surface layers is 20C . These temperature gradients exist primarily in specific tropical regions near the equator originally proposed by French Engineer Jacques Arsene d’Arsonval in 1881, OTEC is not a new technology. Since then many advancements have been made in the development of this technology. The three most common OTEC systems are: open-cycle, closed-cycle and hybrid cycle, all requiring a working fluid, condenser and evaporator within the system. These three systems all employ the thermodynamics of a working heat exchanger and use the temperature differences naturally occurring in the ocean as the driving force. Concerns with efficiency losses due to befouling, system power requirements and heat exchanging systems have lead to exploration through case studies and analysis. While OTEC systems have been studied since 1881 there have been few full-scale implementations. There are still, however, a number of studies being conducted, especially in Japan, regarding the implementation of this renewable large scale technology.…

    Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), to me, is the developing worlds answer to OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). We will no longer have to depend on oil supplies from other countries. OTEC is an efficient, clean process, which utilizes the difference in temperatures between the oceans surface and its depths to produce energy. The ocean thermal energy conversion process works something like a refrigerator in reverse. The warm surface waters vaporize a refrigerant and the vapour is then used to drive a turbine. The refrigerant vapour is then condensed back into a liquid after being cooled by cold water brought up from the ocean depths. This technology is best applied in the tropics like India, because the sun heats the ocean surface to comparably high temperatures, creating the highest temperature differentials between surface and depths, which translates into the largest potentials of energy production.
