The Roman Empire and Han Dynasty were two very large empires. Both of these empires were considered golden ages in one form or another. Han was considered a Golden Age in general because of its length and prosperity, while Rome also promoted prosperity it was mainly the Golden Age of Latin Literature. These empires were similar technologically while different politically. The Roman Empire and Han Dynasty were similar technologically. Both had extensive trade and travel networks as well as water technology. The Romans were able to expand and control their empire because of a large network of well maintained roads; originally designed for a quicker deployment of troops the road network also promoted trade because of the relative safety of travel. Similar to the Romans the Han also had an extensive travel network; however, theirs was one based on the water. The Han used rivers as transport which led to the development of a canal network because, as with the Romans, of the safety of travel. Both of these empires also used water technology to move water without manpower. In Rome aqueducts were used to take advantage of gravity and transport water from far away to farms and cities. In the Han waterwheels took advantage of flowing water to create energy which powered chain pumps that moved water to irrigation ditches. The Roman Empire and Han Dynasty were different politically. The Roman Empire was founded on imported agriculture and didn’t have a set bureaucracy. While the emperor of Rome appointed some advisors the government lacked many institutions, such as a planned budget. Apart from the emperor and senate the Romans didn’t have other levels of government; because of this the farther reaches of the Roman Empire had more autonomy. The Han was founded on strict legalism and had a well organized bureaucracy. Even though the emperor had absolute power, institutions such as the Three Councilors of State and Nine Ministers pressured the emperor into accepting their advice. Because of this the Han was able to better control its empire and even revive after its fall. While the Roman Empire and Han Dynasty seem very different, there are some similarities. Being different politically the Roman Empire and Han Dynasty still were similar technologically.
