The following method is how Fortune determines the most admired list. First, Fortune magazine starts with 1,400 companies and then 1,000 largest U.S. companies are ranked by revenue and non U.S. companies in Fortune’s Global 500 database with revenue of $10 billion or more. Fortune then selects the 15 largest for each international industry and the 10 largest for each U.S. industry, surveying a total of 692 companies from 30 countries. To create the 57 industry lists, Fortune partners with a survey group called Hay Group who asks executives, directors, and analysts to rate companies in their industry on nine criteria, from investment value to social responsibility. A company’s score must rank in the top half of its industry survey to be listed. Because of the distribution of responses, only the collective industry scores and ranks are published in Energy, Forest and Paper Products, Mining, Pipelines, Temporary Help, Trading Companies, and Wholesalers. Because of an insufficient response rate with Health Care, Pharmacy and other services and wholesalers and food and grocery they are not reported. To make it to the top 50 Most Admired Companies overall, Hay Group ask the 3,920 respondents to select the 10 companies they admired most from a list made up of companies that rank in the top 25 percent of last year’s survey in addition to those that finished in the top 20 percent on their industry. Anyone could vote for any company in any industry that is why some results may seem inconsistent. In 2004, Fortune used eight areas of criteria
