This essay belongs in my book because I got to compare two different styles of writing. I like the story of Icarus and seeing it in different writing styles made me think. I loved being able to compare the same story told a different way. It opened my eyes on the changes a story can have based on the writing style. Flying Free

Poetry and Folktales are two very different styles of writing. They represent ideas and thoughts in different ways. The genre of the folktale “The Flight of Icarus” and the poem “Icarus’s Flight” affect how the reader sees the same story. In “The Flight of Icarus” there is more than one character revealed. Daedalus and Icarus are the two characters in the folktale. Daedalus is the father and Icarus is the son. Daedalus is revealed as the strong, brave father who will rescue both of them. Icarus is described as a foolish boy who can’t follow the rules. He is foolish enough to melt his wings. In the folktale it says, “Icarus played about on the beach

“Icarus’s Flight” and “The Flight of Icarus” both represent the consequence of freedom in their own way. In “The Flight of Icarus” and “Icarus’s Flight” the wings in the story represent the rise to freedom. They started off small and weak. After a while they grow into something mighty enough to get you off of the “island”. Once they get the wings and take off there was no stopping them. They were gone for good. Daedalus made the right decision and didn’t get too rambunctious and stayed in the perfect spot. Icarus liked the feeling too much and went overboard. In “Icarus’s Flight” it states “He now had his answer, laws to uphold him in his downward plunge” (Dobyns 18-19). Icarus past the point of freedom. His choice left the ones who loved him in shambles. In the folk tale it says, “Weeping bitterly, he buried his small son and called it Icaria in his memory” (Benson 34). Icarus’s choice to fly away left his family

Apollo’s temple had been built by the well-known Daedalus. He had been held back by the king Minos in the Labyrinth with his son Icarus, from where he had still prepared for flight: only through the sky and escape opened, and so he mixed fathers with wax and thus he prepared wings suitable for flight. When they had been prepared, when both the father and son flew; thus they have been freed from the Labyrinth and the wild and unfriendly master. But when Icarus forgetful of his fathers plan flew high near the sun the wax melted and death soon seized the unlucky boy in the middle of the sea. The father saw the son no longer as he stayed in that place for a long time as the son approached death “Icarus!” he cried, Then mournfully went to Sicily, and then flew to the town of Cumae, where at the top of the castle was a new temple built by Apollo with amazing beauty, for the grace of the god, the savior showed salvation. The Minotaur lives in the Labyrinth, where by the command of Minos the Attic people, and boys and girls, are eaten. The diction used to describe Icarus flight and Flight 063 shows the difference in the style of flying that they are using. Why always speak of Icarus fall?(1). Well, everyone always remembers the bad things that happen in life, and the only good things remembered are those that impact the whole world. There is a poster somewhere that says, When I do something good, nobody remembers. When I do something bad, nobody ever forgets. That poster shows how everybody dwells on the bad, but Aldiss is showing that you should remember the good as well.…

The two stories that are being compared in this essay have very similar situations, relationships, attitudes, status and purpose as they both discuss certain experiences of a teenage boy and his ability not to listen to his father. In the play 'Juice' the relationship between father and son is untrustworthy and sometimes daunting as Rodney experiences a few occasions where his father angers him to the point he feels he has to rebel against his fathers guidance. For example, when Rodney wishes to go to a party to celebrate the end of year 10 but his father refuses to let him go because there was no adult supervising the party. This resulted in Rodney sneaking out without his parents knowledge and going to the party despite his fathers stress on adult supervision. The same circumstances are also shown in the myth 'Daedalus and Icarus' although Daedalus and Icarus seem to have a stronger father-son relationship then Rodney and his father, Craig, in the play. Icarus is prepared to leave his palace to run away with his father showing that he treasures his fathers company and feels protected in his care. Although, Icarus flaw is his failure to listen to his father when he warns Icarus not to fly to close to the sun. This is a literal warning to his son as he has given him wings to fly across the ocean but the wax that holds the wings firmly in place is easily melted. Thus the reason not to fly to close to the sun. But like Rodney in 'Juice' Icarus disobeys his fathers guidance so…

In the story of Icarus, Icarus’s father, Daedalus, made a pair of wax wings for Icarus. Daedalus told Icarus to not fly too low or too high, because if he flew too low, the water will cause the wings to break, and if he flew too high, the sun will melt the wax. Icarus listened to his father for a while, but then he strayed from Daedalus’ instructions. Icarus decides to fly high into the sky. When Icarus got too high, the wax began to melt as Daedalus warned Icarus before. When enough of the wax melted, Icarus crashed into the sea and died.…

Personal narrative and first-hand observation are key components if an author wishes to be effective in his writing. Through the use of personal narrative and first-hand observation, the author is able to gain sympathy from or relate to the audience. Although it can be argued the use of these two components does not result in effective writing, it is proven to be true in Frederick Douglass’ A Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X’s The Ballot or the Bullet, and Immortal Technique’s Dance with the Devil.…

used by a princess’ tutor to warn her not to get too attached to power. In the historical fiction novel, Anna of Byzantium, written by Tracy Barrett, Anna is the eldest daughter of Alexius I, and she is the heir to the throne of the Byzantine empire, when her throne is taken away from her due to her actions that result from her hunger for power. On the contrary, a boy named Icarus, who is the son of a gifted inventor named Daedalus, is portrayed as a boy who does not know where to end his freedom, but at the same time wise by both Stephen Dobyn’s poem, “Icarus’s Flight” and Sally Benson’s retelling of the myth called “The Flight of Icarus.” Although they both have very different lives, they both demonstrate the…

As he escalated, emotionally and physically, Icarus sees the trees, “awkward as camels.” The trees were big and gawky in the view he possessed compared to the “plushy ocean.” Also, the “shocked starlings” pumped by, trying to believe what they are seeing and to continue flying in their safe path. They see the strange scene of something that looks like their species, but is actually not. The starlings pass by Icarus in curiosity and surprise and continuously go on a beautiful and liberating flight. Icarus soars in the sky free from labyrinth and especially arises from traditional expectations. The wings led him “over the fog” and he could feel “the blast of the plushy ocean.” With the feeling of triumph, Icarus flew through the sky “larger than a sail”. As he soared above the “plushy ocean,” which is abundantly rich and luxuriant, the splendid scene lets Icarus drift into admiration and independence. After his father persistently told him how dangerous the waters were, Icarus now sees the ocean as less of a threat, and it seemed like it will cushion his fall. The reader should sense the feeling to “admire his wings” as the character of Icarus feels exultation overflowing in his heart. Through the obliviousness, he finally realizes that he started to “feel the fire at his neck.” The fire…

The tale of Icarus and Daedelus in changed completely because of the different structures. Ovid writes the myth with every small detail; however, Sexton writes the story in sonnet form. Sexton’s 14 line poem eliminates a large amount of details, such as the back story. She makes her poem straight forward to convey the message more quickly. Sextons poetic structure has rhyme which builds a sarcastic tone. Sextons structure gets the reader to believe that Icarus was truly Innocent. Sexton gives the message that as quick as one can receive fame, one can lose it.…

Field also uses diction to portray to the reader that the poem is a more contemporary version of the myth of Icarus. The words “suit”, “gang war”, “committees, and “trains” show that the writer is trying to tell you that the poem is in a more modern time. Field doesn’t even attempt to make the poem sound monumental like older poems and stories usually do.…

Many people read books, and they perceive truths and realize ideals from them. In turn, readers are given to discussions about the topic of a book they recently finished, or they may recommend to other people books that made a strong impression on them. Why do people regard some books as important and make them into a guidebook for their lives? The reason is that books enlighten people and teach them essential things they need to carry out, understand, or enjoy their lives. Nevertheless, it is not true that all people like all books; in other words, a good story has something special, often its central characteristics, such as the plot or the theme. These are the indispensable features of a good story because these features have to be well harmonized to create a reading experience beloved by their readers.…

In the poem “Icarus” by Edward Field, a mythological character is placed in a contemporary setting of the modern world. Field uses figurative language, irony and perspectives in the poem to give the myth a modernized view. A shift occurs and what was once right created an immense impact in Icarus’s life. The poem mirrors the myth by the prison escape, and the plummet to the death of Icarus, but states what has happened after his alleged “death”.…
