Research Topic: Comparison and Evaluation of Marker Inks Derived from Two Natural Sources

Good afternoon, everyone. Today we are very pleased to present to you an interesting research topic that we have experimented upon for the past few months. That research topic is the comparison and evaluation of marker inks derived from two natural sources. Now, the history of markers dates back to 1910 but until the present time, people still use them in their daily lives. However, we are not aware that some commercial marker pens contain harmful chemicals like Xylene which is a flammable liquid that can be fatal if swallowed. It can also cause other harmful effects such as nausea, dizziness and the like. Another chemical marker pens have is tuolene which is a clear liquid commonly found in gasoline. Too much exposure to it can cause headache, sleepiness and deteriorates one’s ability to think vividly. Because of these, we have made it our goal to use natural products such as fruits specifically blueberries and strawberries as compared to the commercial markers without excluding the longevity and quality of the ink. This gives us the ability to answer the question “Can natural sources be used in the production of marketable ink?”

Based on the given problem, we have hypothesized that natural markers may prove to be effective in terms of ink longevity and quality as compared to commercial markers. With that, the experiment will be conducted with the following objectives:
To create a marker produced from fruits that won’t contain dangerous chemicals that may harm the user
To test the quality and ink longevity of naturally made markers through a comparison with commercial markers
To determine the degree of penetration on the paper

Because of the harmful chemicals that commercial markers contain, we found it significant to produce a marker which would not have any disadvantageous effects on a

The use of red dye #40 is common in various soft drinks today. The labels on these beverages do not specify how much dye we are consuming. We did this experiment to find out which soda uses the most dye. Using a spectrophotometer, we measured how much light is absorbed by various known concentrations of red dye. After collecting this data, a standard curve was made that correlated the concentration of red dye #40 to its absorbance rate. Our results showed that the sample of strawberry crush had the highest concentration of red dye #40 when compared to grape soda, diet cherry, and big red. After doing this experiment, one knows how much red dye #40 he or she is consuming when drinking these products.…

This study is conducted in order to determine the feasibility of charcoal and used engine oil as an alternative raw material for whiteboard marker ink production. The purpose of the study is to help the people especially the students to save cents. For the product is very easy and handy to create furthermore our product promotes recycling and reusing because the materials can be found in household. In addition, the product which is a white board marker ink is very quick to make which saves time and energy. The researchers initially tried to produce a whiteboard marker ink by using a different oil-miscible solvent: a white wine and cooking oil. At first we tried to use the 5 table spoon of white wine. At first, the whiteboard marker worked efficiently but it dried up easily for about 1 day. Secondly, we tried the 5 table spoons of cooking oil (unused) and the ink that has cooking oil produced is darker than the ink with the white wine and the ink works very well.…

As temperature rises to its optimum temperature, the absorbency of light will increase because protein is an enzyme and will therefore be affected by temperature. This is because more beetroot dye will pass through the cell membrane and then into the distilled water. The deeper the colour of the beetroot dye, the higher the absorbency of light. Beetroot vacuoles have red pigments which can’t pass through the cell membrane there will therefore be an increase in the amount of red pigment diffusing out of the cell. This is because there is a high concentration of red pigment in the cell and no concentration in the water. Increasing the temperature will also provide kinetic energy to the phospholipid bilayer, increasing the movement of the individual phospholipids – this will cause gaps to appear allowing the dye to pass through. Membrane proteins may be denatured by the higher temperatures and their tertiary structure will unravel also allowing dye molecules through the membrane.…

Paste is a type of glue made from starch or dextrin, a starch product. This investigatory project shows that we can produce our own colored paste without spending much time and money and by performing simple steps. That’s why this Science Investigatory Project can help students save their money instead of spending it in buying expensive and commercialized colored glue. In addition, this colored paste can be an additional source of income. It’s not just affordable; it’s also safe and non-toxic because the ingredients used are starch, water, natural dyes from plants and alum. Alum is used as preservative to prolong the shelf-life of the paste. Natural dyes from plants like Annatto seeds, mayana and turmeric were tested as coloring for this paste. We can also use other coloring from plants by researching and do further study to improve the quality of this colored paste.…
