Both poems Half-past two and Piano seems to be about childhood memories. The theme of childhood experience is presented in both poems. For instance in half-past two the poet is telling us a story about a child who does not know how to tell the time and was forgotten by his teacher when he was asked to stay back after doing something naughty . Whereas in the poem Piano is about a man who listens to a piano playing and it recalls him back to his past. Where he remembers his mother playing the piano to him on the Sunday evenings, at home with winter outside and hymns in a cosy parlor.
In half-past two the story is told to us by a narrative. The narrative uses a childlike tone throughout the poem and this portrays when the poem starts off as ‘Once a upon a schooltime’. The tone makes it seems like the poet is telling a child a story. Unlike the poem Piano it begins with an older person telling the memory about recollection of his mother when he hears a piano playing. Both poems are written in stanzas, although they are written differently. In half-past two the poet has written it with eleven stanzas and in with three lines per stanza, throughout the poem it does not have regular rhythm but it has a rhyme in it. Whereas in Piano it is shorter although it has rhythm and rhyme throughout the poem. The languages used in both poems are equally different from each other. For example in the poem piano it is very formal and more serious and it uses more complex words to describe his emotions. The technique of using onomatopoeia on the poem makes it more interesting, this can be seen when the poet uses the words ‘boom’ and ‘tingling’ indicates that the man remembering his mother is the poet is himself. It portrays that D.H. Lawrence is writing about his personal experience. The poet also uses the words ‘betrays me back’ shows the struggle he is going through remembering something he does not want to remember. The poet’s use of language makes the poem more emotional by

The thing that makes both of the poems alike is that they both serve the same purpose in explaining the lives of two different people but the common chain between the both of them is that one is young and the other is old. The both of them play off of each other in the sense that the poem about the younger generation who are rushing through their lives skipping school, staying out late shooting pool and dying before their time. Both of Everett C. Marm in “‘Repent, Harlequin!’ said The Ticktockman” and Everett in the story “Super Goat Man” shared many similar and different elements. Everett C. Marm was trying to be a rebel to the strict society he was living in and always tried hard to go against all the enforced rules, the Ticktockman and Alice, his partner. On the other hand, Everett in “Super Goat Man” had followed the conformity of the society with the existence of the Super Goat Man. Next, both Everetts had their own resolutions of maintaining the status quo regarding the social issues that they were facing. Provided that, Lethem’s Everett might think Ellison’s Everett is somebody who’s recklessly having an attempt to change his strict government by using violence.…

I have chosen two statues from different eras to make a comparison, Marble statue of Dionysos leaning on an Archaistic Female Figure from the Roman era and Bronze statue of Artemis and a deer from Greek or Roman, late Hellenistic or early Imperial periods. The reason why I have chosen these two objects are that both of them have one big figure and one small figure which makes eyes of viewers move around. They also depicted gods with smaller figures. These two statues have many differences as they are made of different materials and have different poses even though these have similar composition.…

Ancient Egypt, known as “The Gift of the Nile,” and ancient Mesopotamia, known as the land “Between the Rivers,” were the first two civilizations developed by mankind. Not only this is a double-negative that you do not need.] These were they the first civilizations to form, andbut they were also the first river-valley civilizations using the nearby river(s) [redundant – if they are the first river valley civilizations, then aren’t they near a river?] for their benefit. Ancient Egypt was birthed around 3100 B.C., and was based in the northern part of Africa. Ancient Mesopotamia came into existence around 3000 B.C. in the region now known as Iraq. Although the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia were developed independently, they also exhibited similarities in their governments, religions, geographies, and economies. Duffy’s overall tone throughout the poem has a very nostalgic feel as she looks back on her mother’s previous life. In stanza three the poet looks back at one of her childhood memories, “I remember my hands in those high-healed red shoes.” Here Duffy looks back fondly on her past to when her mother was alive. It shows how much the poet admires her mother as the memory is such a small one, but must have meant a lot to her. In stanza two her tone is quite light-hearted as she refers back to her mothers teenage years. “Your ma stands at the close with a hidden for a late one.” This shows her mothers relationship with her mum and how her life wasn’t as perfect as it seemed to be as she also had a rebellious side to her. At the beginning of stanza four Duffy shows an admiring tone towards the things her mother once taught her. “Cha cha cha! You’d teach me the steps on the way home from mass.”…

He rebels against the government and shows up on television to show people how their live would be without being handicapped. At the end of every story he is shot and he dies. In Lawrence’s poem, the memory he shares with his audience is more of a childhood memory. He says “… childish is upon me, my manhood is cast down the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past.” (11/12) the piano Lawrence heard gave him a flashback into his younger years which gave him different types of emotions. Hughes poem is quite different from Lawrence’s; his encounter with music wasn’t from flashbacks but of his experience with listening to the blues. The way Hughes told his story gave me a vivid image of his time with the blues. The poet said “He played that sad raggy tune like a musical fool, Sweet Blues! Coming from a black man’s soul” (13-15) the way Hughes described the singer rather than his flashback made the poet look as if the singer was more important. The relationship between Hughes and the singer and the blues creates a melancholy relationship. Hughes is a cold guy who doesn’t like to show emotion, the way he described himself wasn’t as clear as they way the singer was described “got the weary blues and can’t be satisfied I aint happy no mo’ and I wish that I had died” (27-30). Whereas in the “Piano” the role Lawrence played was more sentimental and soft. He said “betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong to the old Sunday evenings at home” (6/7), the way Lawrence talked about his feelings made me realize that he…

The Title of the poem tells me a lot of information even before I read the poem. The information it puts across is that: A boy is told to stay behind until 'Half Past Two' but this has no-meaning to him because he has no concept of 'time'. The boy cant tell the time but yet he divides the day up into familiar, recognisable units, as in 'schooltime', 'lunchtime', 'hometime'.…

These two poems, in a way they are similar but just because of their themes. Both of the poems talk about nationalism, the two authors talk about their cultures and how much they like and believe in their culture. Another theme shared between the two poems is racism; in both poems we see how the authors hint to us that other people feel superior to them just because of the culture and beliefs. (Half-caste) “‘When yu say half-caste
yu mean Tchaikovsky
sit down at dah piano
an mix a black key
wid a white key
is a half-caste symphony” Black and white keys seem a direct parallel to black and white people so this is a perfect example of racism.…

Both of the poems also deal with repetition to increase the sense of alienation. In the poem the love song the character delays his meeting and this is shown by the poet though repetition of “And indeed there will be time.” The repetition in Preludes is that the ending is the night time like the beginning. This repetition shows the reader the lonliness of the characters and the repetitive life with no sense of change.…

Let’s face it - it is human nature for us to compare ourselves with others, whether or not we do this on a conscious level. We compare ourselves to actors/actress, models, people we see on the street, etc., which more often than not, if we do it too much, makes us, feel like a bit of a failure, even for just a moment. No matter how well you are doing for yourself, there is always someone out there who you will think is better than you, based on what your idea of yourself may be. I never compare myself with others but if I do, I would compare myself to few people that I admire and with the best that I can be. Comparing my present with my utmost potentials helps me in becoming a better person. There may be many reference groups out there that we use to gauge our self-concept. Some of the groups may either have positive or negative affect on us. Most people have more than one reference group that they associate with, but for I really don’t have that much. I think that the one reference group that I use to gauge my self-concept would be my co-workers. They are a group of people that I one day aim to be like when I become a teacher. They are a group of people that may have different style of teaching but their main goal is to enrich the lives of the children that they teach. They are also there to give advice to me when I need it or to give input on something that I can improve on. They try their best to guide you in a way that you are able to achieve the goal on your own. Another reference group that I gauge my self-concept would have to be my family and friends. I say my family and friends because they are the group of people that know me best and won’t judge me for something that I do. For my friends, I have a handful or less that I actually can call my true friends and my family would just consist of my parents and sisters. My family and friends are like my co-workers. They are people who are loving and caring and would do anything to help. My parents…
