Comparing the Ways the Poet Presents the Relationship in the Two Poems ‘Hour’ and ‘Nettles’.

Comparing the ways the poet presents the relationship in the two poems ‘Hour’ and ‘Nettles’.
The poems ‘Hour’ and ‘Nettles’ are both poems about the relationship between two or more people. Both poets used some of the same principles but they also use very different structures. Below are some of the examples that I have found.
In the poem ‘Hour’ and ‘Nettles’, the poet always presents the information by relating most of the words or phrases used in the passage with the title. In the poem ‘Hour’ the poem has used ‘Love’s time’s a beggar’. This phrase relates to the poem’s title because it comes under hour which comes under the category time. This phrase is saying that when you are in love with someone there is never enough time that you are able to have when spending time with them. In the poem ‘Nettles’ the poet uses ‘The boy came seeking comfort and I saw white blisters beaded on his tender skin’. When the parent’s son had returned home after so long he was covered in wounds from the war and was in so much pain he needed comfort to take the pain he had received away. Using key words that are to do with the poem ‘Hour’ and ‘Nettles’ emphasizes on the actual meaning of the poem so that the reader can relate more to the poem. Both poets have used the same structure making the ending verses rhyme with the next line.
In both poems, both poets have presented the relationships by showing the problems that they have within their relationships. Both poems also focus more on the negative side of their relationship rather than the positive. In the poem ‘Hour’ although the persona suggests that to be with a loved one, even for just an hour, is precious and valuable it also presents the traditional idea of time as an obstacle to lovers. The persona states that ‘time hates love, wants love poor’. This shows that the persona is complaining that time is mostly the only factor that really affects a relationship. In the poem

Both poems 'Hour' and 'To His Coy Mistress' present the power time has between two people. 'Hour' is a poem about two lovers who have one hour together and explores the ideas of material possesions and a modern reinterpretation of love. In ‘Nettles’ Vernon Scannell uses elements of nature, the nettles, to portray his keen anger towards the pain his son is going through. At the beginning of the poem, Scannell uses soft ‘s’ sounds to emphasise the soothing of his injured son who has fallen in a nettle bed. The child is presented using emotive language. “It was no place for rest. With sobs and tears the boy came seeking comfort and I saw white blisters beaded on his tender skin. We soothed him till his pain was not so raw.” These soothing sounds emphasises the love his father has for him and how he wants him to recover quickly. The ‘watery grin’ is another emotive description also serving as an opposing image. The way in which Scannell merges the child’s laughter of comfort and relief with the tears of pain from the sting of the nettles shows that the child is being helped by his father to get over the pain.…

When analysing poems 'Netttles ' and 'born yesterday ', both are similar in how they show a parents love and responsibility for a child. While 'Nettles ' highlights the anxieties that a parent has for their child, the latter deals with the hopes a parent can wish upon their child. Both use various language techniques and structure to convey how parents can have different ways of expressing their relationship and love for a child.…

The poem 'As I Walked Out One Evening' consists of three separate speakers: the lovers, the clocks and the narrator. Each speaker represents a different measure and attitude towards time. The lover’s song paints time to be conquerable and ignorable – no more than a passing annoyance that they are outside of. The soliloquy of the clocks demonstrates time as a product of society, there to keep its subjects in line, and ultimately a ruling force. Finally, the narrator speaks of love as being outside of both of these things. Time is a constant flow than brings change and opportunity, and any claim to deny or control it is an illusion.…

‘Nettles’ pertain to the parent/child relationship. The literal meaning of the poem is, about a parent, presumably Vernon himself, and his child. The child falls into a bed of nettles behind a shed; the kid wounds himself. The poem then continues on with the parents of the child soothing him. Afterwards the parent light up the nettles, till nothing is left. The poem ends with a fact; that his child will fall into these nettles again, because…

The first of the two poems I have chosen to compare and contrast is Morning Song By Silvia Path, this poem seems focused on the experience of child birth and the powerful emotions that follow, and is by no means however a generalized and optimistic account of child birth. The second poem I have chosen to focus on is There Be None Of Beauty's Daughters by Lord Byron and seemingly depicts a strong sense of love and bondage between the Byron and the person he is writing about, however it is unclear who exactly Byron is writing about because of the ambiguity surrounding his sexuality. Both poems both do focus on a sense of love and human relationships, Path’s focuses on a maternal love and Byron’s on a couple’s love, the sense and presence, however, of love within each poem differs greatly. Although maternal love is a strong theme within Path’s poem it is not clearly present in the relationship between mother and daughter, if anything the poem focuses on the unexpected lack of love and subsequent emotions that have filled the void left over from this missing sense of love. Byron’s poem focuses on a definite existing love, more importantly a love that does consist of innate affection (like the wavering affection found in Plath’s poem) but affection that has been found. Plath’s poem is structured in a way that resembles the emotional ambiguity she feels towards her daughter, it has been written “free verse” and as such does not pick up a particular rhythm, the only noticeable fixed element is that each stanza contains just three lines. The never truly fixed structure of the poem, in general reflects the distance felt between the mother and daughter in that a particular bond rhythmically is never found between the lines of the poem. This reflects the emotional ambiguity felt towards her daughter, in that just like the lacking identity of the rhyme scheme the emotions felt towards the daughter have a lack of maternal identity. In contrast Byron’s poem has a noticeable…

The Poem consisting of two stanzas begins with examples of how hopeless the speakers love is. McQueen Specifically in the first stanza illustrates the way things are and uses the line endings of the lines to emphasize the images which clearly clarify the division between the two people. The speaker also defines the distant loved one as the 'other' which indicates her or him, being the 'opposite' which is supported by the stars which 'assemble in unfamiliar patterns'. The speaker furthermore continues explaining how different there cultures are since the speaker doesn't 'often watch traffic or television' and instead watches nature and how 'hour by hour the huge tide' comes in and leaves again. One can conclude that the speaker is trying to define himself and express how things are not equal between them. But at the same time the speaker is contradicting himself by still showing how in love he or she is. For example when she notices how the 'Tide absently fingers rocks and shells', which shows how the speaker is absent from the world noticing the smallest things trying to get his or her mind of the beloved one.…
