Designing Non-Human Characters
Watch these videos of productions of The Lion King, Shrek the Musical, and The Little Mermaid and construct an opinion about what is successful and what is unsuccessful about each one.
After reading through the chapters of the textbook I discovered that creating a character begins with the actors. The actors are the ones who have to be energetic and have the passion to protray the characters to the audience. I do agree with the statement that non-human characters are difficult to design. The stage design has an important job which is to protray a certain image to the audience. The audience should feel part of the act and feel that they are in the world of these characters. Also the actors were camouflage properly. The crops used such as mask, long fabric, and puppets made the characters pop out. I also saw there was no computer or robotic crops in the production. The fact that there was no robotic material in my opinion made the production successful as well because the characters moved at a smooth and decent paste. In my opinion, the grass in the production was unsuccessful. I understand they need to have actors to protray grass but they were not camouflaged as well as the other actors were. (When the grass moved the characters moved as well to protray the running.) In Shrek the Musical the characters customs were successful because each character was analyzed before making any customs. The characters have to be studied and based on their persona their customs are made. Also I liked how their customs are done by hand where they can add their own style to the musical. All the costumes were bright and that is what brought light to the characters. In the musical the unsuccessful idea was that donkey did look different then he does. The audience will understand because they are used to seeing him one way on television so they already have an idea in their minds. Donkey does walk on four legs but the actor
