Comparing The Great Depression In Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
The Great Depression was an economic downturn that left most of America crippled againsts its wraith. Although, in every cave there's a glimmer of hope. The Great Depression is known as America’s greatest collapse but out of this derailment came experiences and new way of oeuvre, John Steinbeck's, Of Mice and Men displayed how the Great Depression affected the characters in the book. The characters affected by the alienation from government aid and loneliness caused by the stresses of everyday challenges from race to mental intellect. To illustrate the background of the Great Depression the secondary source and prior knowledge voices that horrors and tragedies everyday people faced during the it. The U.S. government had abandoned all of the citizens leaving them to fend for themselves. Herbert Hoover who was president at the start of the depression had a laissez-faire policy which is abstention by governments from interfering in the workings of the free market. This policy would had ultimately lead to the Stock Market Crash of 1929. The crash lead to a ruination of the government which meant the citizens were no longer going to receive welfare or bonus promises. The Bonus Army which was a group of World War One veterans who were promised a bonus after coming back from the war had to march and protest in front of the riots. They were eventually thrown out and this action showed everyone how the government would handle citizens asking for extra …show more content…

    There were many people affected by the Great Depression the worst off were the farmers because of overproduction of what they were harvesting they were not getting enough money to pay their farms (Doc J) but because of the Agricultural Adjustment Act it helped pay for the their farms but the draw-back about this that the benefits were distributed unevenly to farmers. Women and minorities had it not quite as bad but it was pretty bad for them. Most African Amerithingscan people where on the street (Doc I) because there where people who where so desperae for a job they would be hired for the normal pay because of this invisble scar it was so bd people would go out and steal food to sell to try and bring something home.. So to slove this problem Congress with the approval of Roosevelt passed the Cilvilian Conservation Corps to provide work relief for young men from unployed families by having them dredge out rivers to clran and buld bridges over them along wit other nature perseving things like making hiking trails so people don't destroy the natural area around them. The Civil Works Administration to work within a short amount of time by setting up sewer systems through out cities but the effectiveness was limited due to poor leadership (Doc A).     The 1930s novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck was written during the Great Depression, a time of many financial complications and hopelessness for the American population. It takes place in rural northern California in the town of Soledad, which was where the author grew up. Steinbeck uses his memories and recollections to paint an incredibly vivid landscape in each scene mentioned in the story. Of Mice and Men follows the seemingly futile journey of George Milton and Lennie Small on their quest to make a better life for themselves. Getting to their goal does have its complications, however. Even the differences between the two main characters cause conflict.
