Comparing King Arthur And Sir Lancelot
King Arthur

Throughout time people have faced challenges with their love lives. Some must choose between what is right and what some may want. In the legends of King Arthur, many decisions must be made that may affect the future of Camelot, Arthur’s kingdom. Many versions of Arthur’s story can be ream or viewed on film. One specific movie called, “The First Knight,” is a portrayal of the famous love triangle between King Arthur, his wife Lady Guinevere and the mysterious Sir Lancelot. Similarities between this movie and some readings are apparent. One is, although Guinevere has a secret affair with Sir Lancelot, she did love King Arthur and had not just used him for the privileges that came with marrying him. Also, in bother versions, Lancelot is said to be the most powerful knight and

Some may agree that Guinevere was a bad wife for cheating on Arthur but she could not control how she felt, she could only control where her feelings led her. Personally, I understand how Guinevere could love both Arthur and Lancelot. She must have felt horrible though. In my opinion, Arthur must have felt worse. He felt betrayed by his best knight and his only true love. As king, he had many other problems to deal with and now his wife hurt him so badly. The text showed an angrier side to Arthur than the movie. In “The First Knight,” Arthur was mad but he was more filled with sorrow. The most difficult choice he had to make in his love life was whether he should abide by the law and kill both Guinevere and Lancelot, or set them free. In the movie, he decides to hold a trial and wants the court to decide what should become of them. He wanted to show his people he stands by his laws and no one is an exception. I cannot imagine what thoughts must have been running though King Arthur’s head. In the movie, through all the drama he managed to help Camelot continue to

Sir lancelot du lake was carried off by the enchantress vivien, The Lady of the Lake, who in time sent him to Arthur’s court. She did a great job a teaching him, for her careful education and his love for queen Guinevere set him off on a path to become the greatest knight in camelot and produced the very model of chivalry. In the story of “Lanval” by Marie de France, the titular knight of King Arthur’s court falls in love with a beautiful, otherworldly maiden, a maiden who warns Lanval that he must keep their affair a secret if it is to continue. Anytime he wishes to see her, he merely needs to think of a pure place and she will join him there. When approached in lust by the Queen and accused of homosexuality, Lanval reveals that he is in love with a woman more beautiful than the Queen. By revealing the secret, he loses access to his maiden and by insulting the Queen, he is tried for treason. In the end, his lady reveals herself and saves Lanval’s life.…

Since Lanval is estimated to have been written almost two hundred years after Beowulf, it is obvious that societal ideas have changed, along with the roles and expected behavior of ladies of state. Lanval opens with the introduction of Lanval, a foreign knight serving under King Arthur. Lanval is often overlooked by the King and his fellow knights in terms of finances and friendship, so he is rather put out by being in a strange country alone with little money and no estate to speak of. Enter the first major female character, and Lanval’s soon to be lover, the (largely assumed fairy) Queen. Although she remains nameless and rather sexualized throughout the story, the Queen welcomes Lanval to be her lover, and generally fills all of the roles a husband would at this time. She provides material things as well as money for Lanval, on the basis that he keep their relationship a secret. The Queen is described as other worldly and extremely beautiful, but also independent and in need of no man to provide for her. Throughout the story, the (fairy) Queen retains control of their relationship, going so far as to save Lanval from certain death at the hands of King Arthur’s court and whisk him away to lands unknown via…

Later, though, we see another contradictory form of Love. When Lancelot crosses the sword-blade bridge, he takes off his shoes and faces the blade. He endures much pain and suffering, but then Love helps him and turns "his pain to pleasure" (ll. 3120) This shows that while Love has the potential to cause pain, it can also heal. Another facet of Love is it's power over men. It is described as the most potent weakness of man. One knight cries out that he would "rather strip [his] shield of every buckle and strap, and lose all faith in [himself]...than give up this girl [he] loves." (ll. 1725 - 1730) Lancelot himself is ashamed when one of the many women he encounters on his trip sees him weakened by Love's grip (ll. 1454-55). Love causes him to be so sad that for a moment, "the blood in his face disappeared, and his mouth could not move. The girl slipped from her horse and ran to his side as fast as she could, to hold him up and keep him from falling." (ll. 1440-46) Clearly, Love has an especially strong hold on Lancelot. So strong is it that after the false news of Guinevere's death, Lancelot haphazardly attempts suicide. Finally, one last theme of Love is that Love conquers all. Love can transcend any boundaries, including of course, the adulterous relationship between Lancelot and Guinevere. Their relationship seems pure because Lancelot is so immersed in…

Goodrich also writes in regards to Lancelot saving Guinevere from her abductor. The mentioning of Guinevere’s abduction resonates with the audience, because of the increase in abductions in the 1900’s. This also describes a part of Guinevere’s life that is not normally mentioned in other accounts of her legend. Goodrich uses the following phrase, “Every account of the abduction concurs that the island is of glass, looks like glass, gleams like glass, and/or has on its crystal mountain”(Goodrich 149). This quote describes Guinevere’s abduction, which would later lead to Lancelot saving her. Goodrich also describes Guinevere’s loss of love towards King Arthur and her new love for Lancelot, her knight in shining armour. The author goes on to portray Guinevere’s character in her story; “Queen Guinevere was no lovesick married women in search of titillation, like the usual adherents of courtly love”(Goodrich page 144). This quote exemplifies Guinevere’s hatred towards King Arthur, which could be a reason for which she was victimized, and…

Thinking his career was over, MacArthur was recalled to active duty four years later in the summer of 1941. He became the commander of the US forces in the Pacific. A Japanese invasion of the country drove MacArthur's troops away. However, in the next few years MacArthur led a series of successful attacks on the Japanese military. He was frequently critical when his superiors decided to focus military resources on Europe rather than the pacific. In 1945, the end of the war, President Truman appointed Douglas to supreme Allied commander. He was placed in charge of the formal surrender of Tokyo and for the next 6 years he remained in Japan to oversee the rebuilding of the country. Acts of loyalty appear multiple times in both tales as the characters are tested and tried through each event. In Andrea Hopkins's compilation the Chronicles of King Arthur, Arthur's loyalty to the Camelot and the ideals that built it are constantly scrutinized as his wife, Guinevere, has an affair with his noblest of knights, Lancelot. He knows of this happening, but chooses to ignore the acts, knowing that the public attacks from it could internally lead…

I have always had a fascination with the time of Arthur ever since Richard Harris was in Camelot. The magic that movie inspired in me was unbelievable. The idea of the courtly love and the thoughts the music inspired in me still can bring chills to my skin. This movie may be why I have always loved Johanna Lyndsey books set during the medieval times. She also uses the knightly code in her books but the women in the books are probably a…

The term and Paris's definition were soon widely accepted and adopted. In an article by John C. Moore called “Courtly Love”: A problem of terminology”, he mentions a list of the four distinctive traits of courtly love that Paris writes and that appears in most literary writings on the subject of Courtly love. He writes that “1) It is illegitimate and furtive; 2) The lover is inferior and insecure; the beloved is elevated, haughty, even disdainful; 3) The lover must earn the lady's affection by undergoing many tests of his prowess, valor, and devotion; 4) The love is an art and a science, subject to many rules and regulations-like courtesy in general”. ( Moore.John) An example of these distinctive traits can be found in the story of Lancelot and Guinevere, where Guinevere is married to King Arthur and she has an affair with her husband’s chief knight,…

In this romance, there is a battle between reason and love. Both try to thwart the paths of the other. When love is taking control, there is always a sense of reason that prevents Lancelot from doing what he wants, and when reason has the better of him, love makes him go in a different direction. Reason is the logical explanation behind each action taken or decision made by Lancelot. Love is the attraction that Lancelot feels for Gweneviere and it has a way of pushing aside reason, when he tries to make a judgment. These two elements are almost the devil and angel inside of Lancelot. Neither one can be described as good or bad, but can be considered opposites of each other. Also, most times, love is a stronger trait in Lancelot than the process of thought and reason.…
