Comparing Halloween And El Dia De Muertos
What is your favorite holiday? You may say that it is Halloween, or if you are from a Spanish-Speaking country, it may be El Día De Muertos. They are very popular, and their day of festivity is very close, and you may think that they are very different. However, although thee two days are very different, they have a lot of similarities in the things they do, some of their beliefs, and their origins.

Today, we celebrate Halloween on October 30th . Kids take their costume, go out with their friends, and walk from house to house asking for candy and having fun. The festivity have its origins on the ancient Celtic festival. People believe that during this festival the veil between the land of the death and the land of the living became more transparent,

    When the air starts to get cool and the leaves turn different shades of yellow orange and red the feel of Halloween is in the air. Everyone celebrates Halloween with their own traditions but the history of this spooky holiday remains the same. The Celtic festivals began 2000 years ago marks the beginning of this spooky holiday. The jack-o-lantern that dates back to the legend of Stingy Jack from England is were we got pumpkin carvings from. Then there are traditions we have here in America that we celebrates today. Every holiday has a history and today I would like to explore Halloween with you. The Celtic festival of sown which is derived from the old English term summers end. They believed that October 31st was when the border between our world and the after live was the thinnest. Which would allow the spirits to pass through. They would use bonfires from the bones of each families live stock. The Celtics are not the only ones who contributed to Halloween. The English helped through the pumpkins harvesting and Stingy Jack into the mix. October is the month that pumpkins are harvested. Stingy Jack made a deal with the devil and he out smarted him twice and the legend says that his spirit still roams the earth and he is a pumpkin head. We still celebrate him by carving pumpkins. Carving faces into pumpkins is only one tradition that still grows on in present day. Soul cakes were made for all souls day to celebrate the dead. They were given out when kids use to come to peoples stores and prayed for the ones who they have lost. That is how trick or treating began. Then they are the costumes. Originally costumes were made so they could wore of the harmful spirits. The history of this spooky holiday began 2000 years during the Celtic festivals, but that is only one aspect of today’s Halloween traditions.     Although Halloween traditions originated in Europe, traditions were carried over and are now thriving in America. Almost every citizen embraces Halloween in some form, those who don’t are most likely heavily religious or from another country and have not taken up the holiday and its customs. Halloween history is actually rather vague, if not contrary in some references, it seems that some origins of trick-or-treating (the trick part entailing that the children would wreak havoc on the owner’s property assuming the treat wasn’t granted), carving pumpkins, and dressing up cannot be accurately traced because several variations are present within the history. However, based on careful research, I have discovered that the idea of trick-or-treating actually occurred sometime between the 19th and early 20th centuries and is in fact a fairly new tradition to the notion of Halloween, which was originally intended to be a day where the worlds of the living and the deceased collided. All Saints day and other holidays of a similar nature, such as Day of the Dead in Mexico, are either a parent or child holiday conceived or birthed by the Halloween holiday, thus many similar contributions to these holidays are analogous.
