Comparing Ethos, Pathos And Logos In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar
By comparing the use of Ethos, pathos, and logos in the speeches by both Brutus and Antony in the play , it is clear that Antony’s speech is more persuasive. Both plays have their own unique ways of using Ethos, pathos and logos in their plays but Antony seemed to have the more persuasive speech, even though Brutus was said to be the one who is better at speeches because he does them more often than Antony.
The use of Ethos in Brutus’s speech wasn’t a lot, the one bit he uses was” hear me for mine honor and have respect to mine honor that you may believe” in this he is saying that they need to listen to him and see him for the respect and honor that he has gained from them before he killed their beloved ruler. Antony , like Brutus, didn’t

An example of Brutus’s use of logos is “Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves than that Caesar were dead to live all free men” although that is both pathos, logos , and a rhetorical question, it was a great use of the Logos type of sentence. Antony uses it when he is referring to the will left by Caesar to lure the crowd in so they will stay and listen more. “ but here’s a parchment with the Seal of Caesar… tis his will, let but the commons hear his testament, which , pardon me I do not mean to read.”, this is the part that wins them over into thinking that Brutus was the bad guy and a traitor to Rome.
In conclusion , Antony’s speech was more personal and more persuasive which made it relatable to the Romans. His speech being longer than Brutus’s made his memorable and Brutus’s easily forgettable. Antony worded his speech in a way the citizens can comprehend it better. At the beginning of his speech , he says” I came to bury Caesar, not to praise him” which is him saying that he didn’t want to try to persuade them into loving Caesar , but he lets them do that on their own, so they think they made the decision that Brutus is bad. Antony’s speech was more persuasive

Literature naturally comes to mind as a rich resource for the study of persuasion. To persuade someone completely, one must use rhetorical devices to overcome one of the three key decision making factors: Logos, Pathos, and Ethos. One major concern of Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar is about rhetoric, the skill of persuading people with words. Appeals to logos, pathos and ethos are effectively made to reveal the characters as seen in Cassius, Brutus and Mark Antony respectively throughout the play.…

Firstly, both of them used ethos in their speeches. Brutus was only able to persuade the people by implying them to believe that Caesar was too ambitious just because he said so, whereas Antony had actual reasons to be believable. "Believe me for my honor and have respect to mine honor that you may believe... not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more"(pg126:III:ii). Brutus, for a short while, convinced the crowd that Caesar was too ambitious and if he did not kill him, everyone would be slaves. "The noble Brutus told you that Caesar was ambitious...He hath brought many captives home to Rome, whose ransoms did the general coffers fill... yet Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man" (132,134: III: ii). Antony additionally mentions that he knows Caesar wept when the poor wept and…

Brutus explained why it was only logical for Caesar to be stopped. Brutus portrayed Caesar’s death as a necessary evil. Brutus shows that he too loves Caesar, possibly more than the people, but Caesar has great potential to be a devastating tyrant. Antony uses the Logos to persuade the people as well. Antony uses the Logos method by showing the Romans Caesar’s will. The will persuades the citizens that Caesar cared very much for Rome and it’s citizens…

In Antony's speech, he talks about the bad things that Caesar has done and how Brutus was ambitious. It says, "The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious. If it were so, it was grievous fault, and grievously hath Caesar answered it." (III.ii.75-78) Which is a logo because it is a logic on how Caesar and Brutus are both ambitious. It also says, "But Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man. He hath brought many captives home to Rome whose ransoms did the general coffers fill." (III.ii.84-87) Which means that Brutus is an straightforward man by reason of him brought captives home. Antony is speaking satisfactory about Brutus so the people would listen to Antony more effectively because of the nice things he is saying.…

By bringing up elements of Roman history and true events involving Caesar, Brutus seeks to demonstrate that the assassination was a planned (Antony knew nothing about the assassination) action based on thought and facts. Antony, too, employs logos when he lists examples of Caesar's actions on behalf of all Roman citizens. Therefore, his willingness to share the spoils of war with the people and his establishing a reputation for Rome throughout the known world; even Brutus could not the truth in Antony's words. The will itself is also an example of logos. While Antony uses, the literal will to stir up the crowd's emotions, the contents of the will represent logical support for Antony's defense of…

Sometimes, Brutus’s speech is considered to be the better of the two speeches. Yes, Brutus does use a lot of pathos to move the crowd. But Brutus doesn’t use a lot of other aids like ethos and pathos. Antony uses pathos, ethos, and even some logos to appeal to the crowd.…

Antony loved Caesar and was completely against his murder, so he used rhetorical strategies to persuade the Romans to be against the perpetrators. For example when Antony says “Yet Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man” he is using the mix of sarcasm and logos. Antony repeats this same thing over and over again until the Romans start questioning if Brutus truly is an honorable man. His sarcasm and repetition were both great rhetorical tactics that were used to manipulate and confuse the Roman’s minds. Antony brings together the perfect amount of ethos and pathos when he states, “ ‘Tis his will. Let but the commons hear this testament- which pardon me, I do not mean to read- And they would go and kiss dead Caesar’s wounds And dip their napkins in his sacred blood,” (III,ii,127-132). This is essential because it shows that Antony is credible and trustworthy because he has Caesar’s will. This also appeals to the people’s emotions because they become saddened over Caesar’s death. Antony used his tactics to make the Romans trust him and his views, which led to them rioting against the perpetrators. His use of ethos, pathos, and logos convinced the people that the assassination of Caesar was a cruel act and that Brutus, Cassius, and the other perpetrators are…

One of the most obvious times Antony uses logos to persuade a crowd is at Caesar’s funeral. Here, he speaks of how Caesar never betrayed him and was a benefit to the Roman Empire, contrary to Brutus and Cassius’ positions. When Antony speaks of his benefit to the Roman Empire, he says “He hath brought many captives home to Rome, whose ransoms did the general coffers fill.” (Shakespeare 3.2.97). In this quote, Antony speaks of how Caesar was a powerful, successful military leader, and how the selling back of captive soldiers to their home countries benefitted the Romans economically. The logic used here is that if Caesar had ambitious intentions like…

    3. I felt that Antony’s diction was very formal in his speech; unlike Brutus the crowd does not respond in his speech. Antony uses advance word choice, which makes him look more intelligent to the not so intelligent clump of Romans. An excellent example of his formal diction would be, “ So let it be with Caesar. The Noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious: if it were so, it was a grievous fault, and grievously hath Caesar answer’d it” (Shakespeare, lines 79-82) the words such as…

The way Brutus uses pathos is very strong. Brutus says how much he loved Caesar but he had to murder him for the better of Rome. Brutus said, “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” Also, Brutus shows his sympathy over Caesar’s death. Brutus said, “As Caesar loved me, I weep for him; as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant; I honor him: but, as he was ambitious, I slew him.” Brutus…

Brutus’s also said, “Had you rather Caesar were living, and die all slaves, that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?” which appeals to logos because his is making a logical statement that says Caesar’s death was for the best to Rome’s men freedom. At the end Brutus appeals pathos by saying, “who is there so vile that will not love his country? If any, speak; for him have I offended” Brutus tells the Roman citizen that Caesar deserved what he got because he was too ambitious and would eventually become a much powerful ruler and would make the romans his slave.…

Cassius chooses to persuade different characters through appeals to Logos, which indicates his true qualities and aspects, and how they reflect his motifs. To appeal to Logos, one must appeal to the logical side of a person’s mentality; they must use reasoning and syllogism to persuade another person into believing that their opinion is completely logical, and is therefore the best decision to make. This can be seen in Cassius numerous times, and it establishes how he is calculating, logical, and cold. In the second scene of the first act, Cassius tells Brutus that Caesar is not the godly king the he sets himself up to be, and persuades Brutus that Caesar must be overthrown. Cassius convinces Brutus that Caesar is not fit for the thrown by using recollections of past experiences, in which Caesar can be seen as frail and impotent, to insult Caesar and convince…

Why did Antony’s speech beat Brutus’s speech? Antony’s speech was better than Brutus’s speech because he hit the audience with Pathos (Emotion), unlike Brutus who used Logos (Logic) and Ethos (Ethics). Mankind are subjected to their emotions rather than thinking for themselves, and due to this Antony’s speech prevails Brutus’s speech. When Brutus spoke to the crowd, they understood what he was saying and trusted him. When Antony spoke, the crowd rose up in rage and was set on revenge, which had the opposite effect of Brutus’s speech.…

In Brutus’ speech, pathos does not come as easily, but it is still there. It starts on line 14-18 with statements such as “hear me for my cause” (scene 3, line 13-14) and “believe me for mine honor” also “you may be the better judge” which gets the audience listening to what he has to say and makes them think that there is a good reason for Caesars death. He finishes with a line that says “I slew my best lover…
