Comparing Chains And A Stone In My Hand
Since I have been in first grade I have loved reading. All books are quite amazing as they all have their own message, their own story, and their own creativity. When I read two amazing books, Chains and A Stone in My Hand my heart was truly inspired. They both consist of truly amazing characters who got through indescribable events however they still keep fighting.

Isabel, the main character in Chains is quite amazing, and Malak, the main character from A Stone in My Hand is also quite extraordinary. They both are not only great examples of the humankind and what amazing people there are in the world, but they are both also astonishing people. Isabel and Malak are both victimized yet they both share the trait of being courageous which they used to overcome their hardships.

Isabel is a slave who should have received her freedom when her previous owner died. However, Ruth, her sister, and Isabel

The terrorism going on her city causes her to see unbelievable, horrible things. The main climax is when her brother, Hamid throws stones at the soldiers and gets severely injured. He gets put in the hospital, and the book ends with Malak remembering the strength that they have all kept throughout the challenges that were given to them. Malak has been oppressed and victimized to a level that none of us should ever have to go through before which is shown with the heart wrenching quote of “All through the day, whenever the sadness comes, I pinch my arm to make the sadness go there.”(pg.63) However she still manages to stand up when her family is in danger and she cares for them, “I leap the final step and run toward Hamid”(157). So,she is young, horribly victimized, and still courageous to save her family from the horrible threats that surround

Isabel is always looking in new directions and at different angles. One example of this is she never really gave up trying to get Ruth back and getting them freedom. She always made things possible for herself, like when she sneaks out to tell Colonial Reagan new information about Master Lockton. She did this because she wanted freedom, and she wanted it badly. When her plan fell apart and Colonial Reagan abandoned her, she tried to become a loyalist to gain freedom. I think the only reason she made these decisions was because of her desperately wanted freedom. “My sister and I were wrongfully taken from Rhode Island. I mean to get us back there.” (102) Isabel told Colonial Reagan this in return for information about Master Lockton’s stealthy plan. Isabel’s whole life depends on hope.…

Due to the racial biases at this time, Isabel, having black skin was considered a lesser person, and was a slave from the time she was born. Isabel started in a kinder household, where she came her closest to freedom, but had the chance taken away from her when she was sold to a new family. At a very young age Isabel began working for Mrs. Lockton, with her sister Ruth, and saw the true unfairness of slavery. She was mistreated and abused by her mistress. This time her masters went by the names of Mrs. and Mr. Lockton, this leads us to our next character, Madam Lockton. Even though she was wealthy, Mrs. Lockton was also born into a form of slavery. As a woman she was always the property of a man, whether it be her father, or her husband. She continually tried to stand up for herself, even though she was beaten because her husband saw her as property. Society thought that the man's life should be protected over the woman’s, because they are more valuable. “She stopped as Madam cried out in pain. ‘The master likes to be obeyed. He’s not happy she wants to head for Charleston. And she don’t want to stay here.” This is a quote from Becky, a servant in the Lockton household.…

Other readers believe that Isabel should not support the rebels because she is owned by a Loyalists couple. Isabel is just a slave; and her opinions do not matter. This is wrong. This gives her even more of a reason to join the rebels because she is treated badly by people who support the King. The Locktons beat Isabel, take away her sister, ban any privilege she is given, and do whatever is in their power to hurt her. The rebels treated her better…

At the end of the book, after much yearning and fighting for freedom, Isabel finally runs away. As said on page 288, “I was reborn as Isabel Gardener and this proved it.” This is the most important metaphor in the story. For many years, the colonists wanted to be free from the British, but in those days, it was unthinkable to reject the government so strongly. Isabel, like the Patriots, rebelled against her mistress and ran away to become an independent…

Isabel had faced many internal and external conflicts in Chains. One internal conflict Isabel faced was when Curzon asked Isabel to be a spy for the patriots “He stopped beside a barricade. The brim of his hat cast his face in shadow. ‘You might hear things. At the Lockton house.’ ‘What kind of things?’ ‘Useful things. Things that might help you get to that lawyer and your freedom.’”(pg 39).If she did she would get help to be free. I could spend hours on end wrapped up in a good book. I confess… I don’t spend as much time reading as I would like to, but when I get around to it I can’t put the book down. I love to read because of my mother. When I was young I disliked reading and preferred to watch movies instead. To get me to enjoy reading my mother would read stories to me and I would read along with her. One day my mother read only classic books from our houses to San Antonio, Texas. We read Little women, Great Expectations, Treasure Island, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Ten Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, plus more. I remember how her voice made the words on the pages come to life. She would very her tone for each character and made each one unique. It was like watching a one man play. I soon wanted to read the stories by myself because I was always in a rush to know the ending; reading to myself was faster than my mother reading aloud to me. Every time I read I can still…

Throughout high school we have always been tasked with different materials to read; whether it be Shakespearean texts, short stories, poems, or just books in general. No matter what though, I love to read. So any text I take in, I am always eager to absorb the words. The texts I have read at the time may have just felt like assignments, but now as I am older, I can see the lessons to be learned within them and how they were a major aspect as to how I view situations in the world around me. I cannot pick a favorite text that I have read throughout my grades nine to twelve years, but I will review a few that made an impact on me.…

They never asked me what do I want to read about or what I want to learn about until my 7th grade year when we had to read a book, take a test on it, and then write a book report on it. When I was listening to my teacher describe the assignment I was waiting for the circumstances. Then she said anything we want to read and do a book report on. I was dumbfounded when I went to the library because I had no idea on where to start. So I just started going to random areas of the library and seeing anything that just popped out at me and begged me to read it. Finally one did, and to this day still my favorite book I have ever read, “Iron Marshall” by Louis L’Amour. I fell in love with this book. I read it every night before I went to sleep and every day during school when I had down time during class. What drew me in was that there was action in every chapter and the story was in such good detail. I now know the saying that the book is better than the movie. And it is all because of “Iron Marshall”. After reading that book I had to see what else Louis L’Amour had because of how much I fell in love with the first one. Oh he did and to my surprise I can’t pick a favorite one! I read every single book he had in the library by the end of my sophomore year in high…

Reading was fun when it was newly acquired skill. I was excited to read to my parents when they returned home from work. I remember reading my favorite book series by R.L. Stein (Goosebumps) while in the second and third grades. The series was about hauntings that affected teenagers. I remember my favorite book in the series was Piano Lessons Can Be Murder. I could relate to that because at the time, I was taking piano lessons.…

How could someone not love reading? I thought. I would open a book and see worlds created by the words in them. Cue twelve-year-old mind being blown.…
