I'll start by explaining how I felt about both pieces. The "Gavotte" had a very calming affect on me. For a minute I felt as if I was in the wonderful jungle sitting and listening to a peaceful waterfall and finding peace to my soul. But it also made me tap my fingers and feet.
The second piece by the Hovhannes had awoken a totally different emotion in me, instead of feeling happy and peaceful I felt scared, uncertain, and had a feeling that something bad was about to happen. After a while I started to get annoyed of all the repeated high notes. But I still tapped my fingers according to the Marimba. Unfortunately I didn't have any intellectual or spiritual responses for both the pieces.
I will now explain the elements of Music to show how both the pieces where played differently and how they were played the same.
The beat of the "Gavotte" was not too fast or too slow, more or less in the middle. Although it did have a "jump" once in a while. The rhythm was pretty lazy and simple because it had quite a bit of repetition. But it isn't as obvious as the very repetitive rhythm of the second piece by Alan Hovhannes. The "Gavotte" had a skip and step melody , which means that it notes would jump back and forth on the scale. The harmony was thick and had a rich sound to it. It had a block harmony. The timbre would have a occasional jump once in a while. During most of the piece it had a relatively low level of dynamic contrast.
The "Fantasy on Japanese Woodblocks" was the strangest piece I've ever heard because it sounded like a mess, but at the same time it was very interesting. What made this piece so annoying was the continuous jump of pitches and the repetitive rhythm accompanied by a fast jumpy beat. This piece also had a skip and step melody. The harmony had a counter melody, which helped make the repetition of the piece slightly less obvious. The timbre was hard and rough. The notes were hard and disjointed most of the time, it never really came down softly.
After listening to both pieces, I can without doubt say that I liked the piece by Prokofiev better than the one by the Hovhannes, because I would rather be happy than scared, and I believe that I speak for everyone in my class when I say that. But nevertheless, both the pieces were excellent in their own way. Both pieces were thick and repetitive, although the piece by Hovhannes was a lot more repetitive than the piece by Prokofiev. But then again, the 'repetitioness' is what that created the theme for that piece.
It's no doubt that music from different parts of the world will be different, The "Gavotte" and the "Fantasy on Japanese Woodblocks" are a great example of music from different parts of the world. But each and every one of them will have unique beauty, something that will make it stand out from the crowd, after all, who would like to live in a world where everything is the same!

During “Waltz of the Flowers,” a part of The Nutcracker selection, the mood of rebirth and growth sept into the audience. The piece started very calmly with the dancers doing jumps about the stage. As the piece progressed, the jumps and leaps got grander and the movements became larger and more impressive, as the flowers “grew”. Using the listening guide also helped me to distinguish each instrument. If I was to hear the music on my own riding in my car I could probably pick out the violin that’s about it only because I played a little growing up. This type of music is not what I am used to hearing mostly gospel, and R&B. I’ve never really listened to music without words. The orchestras played this piece to create a great closing to the concert. The conductor made a great decision to arrange this song to be at the end giving almost a sense of closure. The addition of the percussionist again helped give the piece the nice lifted feeling, as well as help the orchestra stay together; however the dynamic contrast between the four sections was rather light.The use of a snare drum drastically changed this piece, it feels more like a slow waltz. The little use of dynamics, however, kept the melody from popping out as much as it should have. In the beginning of the piece everybody played the notes with space between then; however towards the end, a few of orchestra members played the notes smoothly and connected whereas the rest of the orchestra played the notes spaced. The intonation and a steady tempo was retained throughout the performance which gave this piece a focused tone. The first piece was called Quintet in g minor, Op. 56, No. 2. It was by Franz Danzi. The first movement was an Allegretto. It was in a major mode and in triple meter. It started with polyphonic texture. The flute and oboe were playing a portion of the melody and the clarinet was playing another melody, both over the bassoon and horn. There were portions of the movement in which the flute would play a melody above the rest of the instruments in homophonic texture. This gave the piece a light, fluttering sound. One minute it’s upbeat “Spanish” rhythms and the next is slow and steady romantic pieces for the lovers within the drama. By the use of such musical connotations, the overall impact of the ballet is enhanced; so I would venture to say that this is utility music. I can also see the overall ballet as ternary form due to its three major sections. The first section in act one states the thematic material of a conjunct melody yet vivacious rhythmic patterns, connecting me with the carefree and in love feeling evoked. It carried a more elated structure. The second section, on the other hand, relays the contrasting theme of a darker more ambiguous tone. It is one of the most remarkable ‘impressions’ in the whole collection. What is a special in this piece is its structure. To put it differently, the number is structured as a series of three alternations between a dance-like principal theme and a freer, copla-style secondary melody. That is to say, it is built on two alternating or contradicting themes a dance-like principal theme. The dance section recalls the rhythm of the flamenco bulerias, while the distribution of the notes simulates a guitar technique alternating thumb and index finger. The first section of the concert was the most delightful and satisfying to listen to. The violins and woodwinds were the main melody for most of the piece.
