Compare and Contrast Two Cultural Events
Compare and Contrast two Cultural Events or Celebrations; Sensation (White) Festival and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival
Sensation Festival
History
Sensation is an electronic dance music (EDM) festival which began in 2000. The event originated in Amsterdam, (Amsterdam ArenA) by a company called ID&T, and was experienced by around 20,000 clubbers. The sequel festival was created in 2001, however this time, the number of attendees had reached 40,000. All visitors were asked to attend in white outfits as a tribute to Miles Stutterheim who helped found ID&T but sadly died in a car accident in 2000. Brother of Miles (Duncan Stutterheim, Sensation CEO), asked visitors to dress in white as people did so at Miles’ funeral. The image created was reported to be so staggering, that the dress code has stuck leading to the slogan of the event, "Be Part Of The Night - Dress in White".
Sensation commenced in Amsterdam in 2000, and since then over half a million people across the world have experienced one of the most spectacular dance and music phenomenons in the world. (Sensation, 2012).
The festival is host to some of the biggest house DJ’s in the world during each eight-hour stage shows which include acrobats, actors, state-of-the-art lightshows, lasers and fireworks. Performances often include dancer’s abseiling from the roof, flame shooting and carnival floats part the crowds. (See Appendix A, Figure 1.1).
Sensation is known to be the largest and most extravagant in the electronic dance music scene for more than one reason. Each year, ‘Sensational International’ tours countries such as Prague, Korea, Serbia, Norway, Germany and the UK. The first event of every year is held at the Amsterdam ArenA, where the festival originated. This festival is still known as ‘Sensation White’ and management are focused on ensuring they keep the event as close to the original as possible. The new theme of the ‘Sensation International’ tour is launched at the Amsterdam edition each year,

A week before the event I was at home and I received a phone call from my guy best friend. I answered and he was yelling “We’re going to EDC Vegas. Get your stuff ready!”. A day before the Electrical Daisy Carnival we drove all day just to get there, taking turns. We were so excited, playing Electrical Dance Music, and jumping in the car like we were kangaroos. We got to the hotel, went to our room, left our stuff, and then went out to explore Vegas for a little before the event, which was the next day.…

He mentions that Tesfaye already has five top-selling songs on Billboard this week, one of the most esteemed countdowns in North America. He also names some of the influential and powerful people in the music industry who also attended the concert such as Kardinal Offishall, Bell Media production president Randy Lennox and Universal Music Canada CEO Jeffery Remedios. This communicates that the Weeknd is very prominent in the music industry and he is attracting the attention of big names who see a great deal of potential in him. Above all, he mentions Tesfaye’s world tour which signifies that, not only is he popular in North America, but he is admired worldwide and enough fan around the world to fill stadiums and play shows. Another effective rhetorical device employed is diction. The author’s vocabulary is very informal and almost conversational in nature making the targeted age group more interested in reading this review. Due to the fact that the topic of the article is The Weeknd, those interested in reading this article are most likely are young adults that is why the word choice is colloquial and for ease of reading. Diction is also used to emphasize and further praise Tesfaye. He utilizes adjectives such as “buoyant”, “impressive” and “stratospheric” to describe each the concert and to prove that he is an outstanding performer…

Throughout Zeds Dead’s performance at Ritchie Coliseum, another sense was thoroughly engaged in addition to the auditory element of lyrics and synthetic instrumentals: vision. Zeds Dead performance had several marked features of visuals that exemplified the sensualistic nature of electronic dance music. Accordingly, “…such syntheses and modulations are carried out in the ‘laboratory’ of the club, where in most cases the pitch-black darkness is impregnated by techno music, a few lights, the occasional strobe and artifcial smoke.” (Vitos, 2). To typify this characteristic of EDM, Zeds Dead included many multicolored beams of light rotating over the cloud and flashing lights typically when the beat dropped, in an otherwise dark room. Additionally, there were designed visuals in the background, typically of a “trippy” rotating vortex,…

In this next section S.W.O.T analysis will be used to analyze the festivals strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats which will provide the framework that the recommendations will be based upon. The festival has many strengths that have enabled its continued success since its infancy. The location for the festival alone is a great strength as it takes place within the popular Gros Morne National Park which provides a setting of amazing natural landscapes, and spectacular scenery for the event. It is apparent that the festivals majority of customers are locals from nearby communities, which is great as it shows the festival has the support of the nearby communities, and does not rely on visitors from afar or out of the providence. The strong focus on community can also be seen within the festival as there are various local artists, musicians, and writers showcased along with the numerous local programs and collaborations with local arts groups, including the: Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador, Gross Morne Summer Music Program, and school outreach programs.…

Rave. What does one think of the word rave? Does ranting and raving come to mind as a way of communication or does flashing lights, dance music, and the use of drugs come to mind? If the youth of society were to be asked this question, every single of one of them would refer the word rave as a party filled with dance music and ecstasy. This youth movement has evolved into an electronic music subculture known as rave (Morris 1). A subculture is a separate world within the larger dominant culture that has the same values of the dominant culture but is different enough to be classified as a subculture (Henslin 46). The rave subculture can be also be classified as a counterculture, defined as a subculture with values and norms counter acting the values and norms of dominant society (Henslin 47). Rave culture can be classified as a counterculture where the youth involved partake in multiple acts of deviance and violate the social norms.…

Similar to any other community, the EDM world has grown its own principles and characteristics that guides their conduct at any event. Some features include gloving, eccentric outfits, and light shows. Besides the physical aspects followed in the community, the acronym ‘PLUR’- representing peace, love, unity, and respect is something that must be abided by rave-goers at all times. All of these traditions express love for the common interest- Electronic Dance Music; but may have also something to do with the central factor in these dance parties: drugs. According to Kavanaugh and Anderson, the sense of camaraderie and respect that the EDM community has for one another, can be intensified as a result of the illegal drugs that are ingested at the dance parties:…
