Contrasting Perspectives on the Treatment of Fears:

1. Psychologists consider a phobia to be an irrational fear, meaning it is a fear reaction that is out of proportion to the reality of the danger. This differentiates itself from a normal fear reaction because the apprehension felt towards something alarming is to a real danger.

2. According to the Freudian concept of psychoanalysis, phobias are believed to originate from childhood traumas. This perspective also supports the idea that phobias may be replacing other hidden fear or anger that the individual is reluctant to face. Fortunately, these anxieties can be treated. Of the five psychological viewpoints this psychoanalytic approach is consistent with that of the psychodynamic perspective. This perspective, as well as the psychoanalytic approach, argues that our behavior is a result of the unconscious mind and childhood experiences.

4. Another method of treatment Joseph Wolpe has refined since it was first suggested is, the systematic desensitization behavioral technique. This behavioral tactic is considerably different from the psychoanalytic view. This is because it is not focused on the unconscious causes of the problem or on the inhibited troubles. Instead, it concentrated on the idea that since you have learned this unproductive behavior, being the phobia, you must now unlearn it.

5. The psychological perspective in which Wolpe’s method of treatment is consistent with is, the behaviorist perspective. This perspective and Wolpe’s approach are both concerned with how environmental factors affect apparent behavior and use conditioning as a

Wolpe would then introduce me to a form of progressive muscle relaxation that involves the tensing and relaxing of different muscle groups. These muscle groups can include that of the arms, hands, face, back, stomach, legs and so on. If I can come for this treatment earlier, hypnosis would have also been used on me. Although, since in most cases hypnosis has been shown to be unnecessary when obtaining full relaxation, this was not required.     Psychodynamic therapy is the idea that anxiety is seen as a symptom of an underling conflict. Also psychodynamic therapy seeks to bring unresolved past conflicts and unacceptable impulses from the unconscious into the conscious, where patients may deal with the problems more effectively. (Feldman,2010,pg.430) Psychodynamic therapy is based on the Freud’s psychodynamic approach to personality, which holds that the persons employ defense mechanisms. The most common defense mechanisms are repression, this would push threating impulses and conflicts back into the unconscious. A neurotic system is what Freud calls for a lot of anxiety that produces the unusual behavior, since it is impossible to bury conflict and impulses completely. Fraud wanted it to be possible to get rid of those unwanted conflicts and impulses by letting them out of the unconscious part of the brain and into the conscious part of the brain. Fraud wanted and assumed that this technique would help lesson anxiety so that these individuals would have a better and more effective life.     The psychodynamic approach was associated with a man called Sigmund Freud, this man believed that the brain was split into 3 parts, just like an ice-burg. At the tip of the ice burg where everybody can see, is the “Conscious” part of the brain, this holds thoughts and perceptions. The “Pre Conscious” level is where memories, feelings and past experiences are locked up in our mind but often let out, this holds memories and easily accessed knowledge. The unconscious level is where everything is under the surface and you would never dare to tell anyone other than yourself, this holds unacceptable sexual desires, irrational fears, violent urges, irrational fears, selfish needs and immoral urges. Freud believed that throughout life all of these levels are shown, and sometimes when we say something that we might never thought we would say, that is our unconscious level showing. Freud also said that the early experiences in life were the ones that made you who you were as an adult. If there is struggle throughout certain stages during your early life then this could result to an individual becoming stuck and could result in difficulties of personality traits which may explain some ones behaviour in later life. It is important to recognise that we may not be able to understand behaviours as the individual may not understand themselves what is causing their certain behaviour, the “psychodynamic therapy” helps to make a person examine unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past relationships and try to find the need and desire to be angry. The therapy usually lasts around 2 years as the therapy is a goal to change an aspect or someone’s identity or personality to resolve when the person was “stuck” in their childhood stages of development.     A Phobia is a persistent, abnormal or irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid the feared stimulus. Phobias are largely underreported. An estimated 6 million people in the United States alone suffer from phobias. The types of phobias is extremely extensive, however the most well-known phobias are claustrophobia, arachnophobia, aerophobia, dentophobia, agoraphobia, and zoophobia to name a few.
