Compare and Contrast- Countries
History should be an interesting subject, but I dislike it when it comes to the history of Islam or whatever things that are related to Islam. It is not that I am being racist because at my own perspective, in order to study well in subjects related to history, one has to have the interest to explore it and find out what caused such historical moment to occur, and I have the least interest to explore Islam. However, things go the other way round when it comes to the history of my motherland, Malaysia and our neighbor, Singapore. When I looked at the world map for the first time when I was young, I was shocked to see the size of Singapore, which is almost the size of Selangor, one of the state in Malaysia. Despite of its size and lack of natural resources, Singapore still could manage to overtake Malaysia in lots of aspect, such as economy, political stability, advancement of technology and cleanliness. As a Malaysian, I felt ashamed, but at the same time, I am curious on how did Singapore manage to achieve such result. Although generally Malaysia and Singapore are different, still they share certain amount of similarities.

Both Malaysia and Singapore are similar in term of their historical background. In 1800s, both Singapore and Malaysia were previously under the British colonization. During that time, Malaysia and Singapore were sharing the same goal, which was to be independent and build up a strong political and economic society. Hence, leaders from both countries attempted to bring their countries towards independence. As for Malaysia, British promised to grant Malaysia independence with a condition, which was to ensure people in the country to live peacefully and harmony regardless of their difference in races. For example, Tunku Abdul Rahman put a lot of efforts to convince and unite the political parties such as UMNO, MIC, and MCA because he believed that all leaders can ensure the safety and welfare of their respective people. Not only Tunku Abdul

Malaysia ranks second in terms of Australian investment in the ASEAN countries (MITI 1993). During the 1980s both countries began to strengthen joint economic, trade and social ties. This process of bridge-building had its successes and failures. Most of the problems were caused by the meeting of two cultures with quite different historical, political and social origins. Some clashes were inevitable. The management and resolution of these conflicts has taken time, patience, sensitivity and respect from both nations (Woolcott 1991).…

I think which countries a government decides to trade with determines who that country is. Let's look at this in terms of people. I'm young, 22, and I'm just starting to get out in the world, I've experienced many times how the wrong friends can negatively impact my own image. Even who my family is can have that negative effect. My gene pool is filled with every drug you can imagine. I don't tell this to employers. It almost cost me the job I wanted. I wanted to change positions, something with better hours, higher pay, better chance of being recognized for a promotion and more enjoyable work; I was able to get the position but after my boss learned of my family, she treated me different, as if I was going to go down the same road. Why wouldn't she? Every person in my family does, so what makes me different? That's an extreme situation though. Let's say it's just a couple of friends that are troublemakers, mostly misdemeanors. If your name gets attached to one of those misdemeanors, it's tainted forever.…

The United States constitution is legendary. When other countries were establishing government they often looked to the United States to copy our government. I have chosen the country, Costa Rica, to compare their government to the United States (U.S.) government. Costa Rica is located in Central America surrounded by Panama and Nicaragua, the rest of their borders is water. Because two sides of Costa Rica are surrounded by water they often have flooding by the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike the United States, Costa Rica has two seasons rather than four. The dry season (December to April) and the rainy season (May to November.) Costa Rica also has four volcanoes, two of them being active. Arenal, this is their most active volcano, erupted in 2010. Costa Rice is a Latin-American country. (CIA WFB)…

Even though we come from different races, background, language and skin colour, we live as a big family. Instead of argument, we choose to live in a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. We treat other people brotherly or sisterly and always have great respect for each other. We took every problem to round-table talks. According to virtualmalaysia.com (2010), Tunku Abdul Rahman has always been a revered Malaysian leader who had made immense contributions to the country. The Singapore Story, history of Singapore, was introduced only 30years after Singapore’s independence on August 9, 1965. It was recorded in a chronological order where it followed the historical events, Japanese Occupation, race riots, merger and separation, which had happened in Singapore. Therefore, we cannot not deny the fact that incidents, 19641 and 1969 race riots, involving race and religion never happened. They are part of our history2 (Lee, 1997). The term “objective” suggested that it is not influenced by personal feeling, interpretations, or prejudice; based on facts; unbiased3. However, history is the past and historians are those who study and write about history4 (Warren, 1997). This sentence sparked an argument if Singapore Story was “objective” when it was seen from a Singapore standpoint. The Singapore Story had an objective which was for the nation building and to do so, the history curriculum was shifted significantly to the teaching and learning of Singapore’s history5 (Gan 1997). Therefore, seen from a Singaporean standpoint, we were biased, but it was objective.…
