Comparative Study of a Walk to Remember
A Comparative Study on the Book and Movie Versions of “A Walk to Remember”

I. Introduction
Nicholas Sparks was born on December 31, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska. He grew up in Minnesota and California, and won an athletic scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. He started writing fiction while in college but his early attempt at a novel, “The Royal Murders,” was never published. After graduating in 1988 he worked in various jobs, as a waiter and real-estate appraiser, and then he made a living by buying and restoring old homes. He started his own business and sold it; then he worked as a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company. He continued to write, and in 1990 he collaborated with former Olympic athlete Billy Mills on a coming-of-age novel, Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding (1990).
In 1993 Sparks and his wife Cathy, whom he had married in 1989, moved to New Bern, North Carolina. A year later Sparks began to work on what would become The Notebook (1996), which he sold to Warner Books for a million dollars. This romantic novel quickly became a best-seller, staying for over two years on the best-seller lists for both paperbacks and hardbacks. It was nominated for Book of the Year by the American Booksellers Association in 1997 and made into a film in 2004, starring James Garner and Gena Rowlands.
Sparks followed this success with another novel, also with a romantic theme, Message in a Bottle (1998). Another best-seller, it was made into a 1999 film starring Kevin Costner, Robin Wright Penn, and Paul Newman. Although reviewers had mixed opinions about the merit of his novels Sparks was now firmly established as a writer of easy to read romantic novels that appeal to a wide readership. A Walk to Remember was published in 1999, and was made into a film in 2002, starring Mandy Moore and Shane West. The story was inspired by Sparks’ younger sister, who likes Jamie in the novel, died of cancer. Since then Sparks has

David Sedaris was born in 1956, and spent part of his formative years living in upstate New York - the homosexual son of a disapproving father. His father was an IBM engineer, and in the early 1960s, his family eventually moved down south to North Carolina. This exposed the fledgling author to the bustle of city life. By his own accounts, his tenure in New York was spent in an exceedingly rural location, which contrasted sharply with his new setting in North Carolina. To complicate matters, Sedaris suffered from a compulsion to lick light switches throughout his adolescence. The good news is, he did eventually grow out of it; unfortunately he then became a crystal meth addict (Preston).…

In our rather busy lives today, we sometimes forget to take deep breaths and look at ourselves for who we really are. Our memories are there to guide us to establishing who we are. The line between selective memory and short term memory is dependent on our world. What we chose to remember someone else doesn’t and it all comes down to our uniqueness in our own worlds. Memories help shape our reality and their everlasting presence is a privilege that we have to understand ourselves as soul entities in our own worlds.…

Revelations about the book's origin have been a cause of doubt as to its authenticity and factual accounts, and the publishers have listed it as a work of fiction since at least the mid-late 1980s. Although it is still published under the byline "Anonymous", it is largely or wholly the work of its purported editor, Beatrice Sparks. Some of the days and dates referenced in the book put the timeline from 1968 until 1970. Its major themes would be difficulty of communication and problems of adolescent identity. It is written a series of events in the form of multiple diary entries.…

I went into my junior spring soccer season kind of sad, my past coach, wasn't going to be our team coach this year. I wasn't really depressed though, because I had tons of friends that were playing this year. One of the great things about spring club soccer is that it is not a school-sanctioned sport. To me this said that I was able to play another season of soccer with my friends from other schools around the state without the normal High School rivalry between us. Year after year, the schools pulled pranks on each other, sometimes nothing big, but sometimes something big. I remember my freshman or sophomore year, when a few guys I knew went over to Elkins and put up “ESE” signs all over the commons. When they walked in to school the next day and the lights came on, the signs and blue and white shot all over the room. They were extremely angry, which is why it was such a good prank.…
