Lifes and Works of Jose Rizal

Comparative Analysis of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo One of the great books written by our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, is Noli Me Tangere. It is a Latin word meaning "Touch Me Not". He started writing it in Madrid, Spain on 1884 and continued in Paris, France. He was finished it in Berlin, Germany on February 1887 and had printed at Berlin Buchdrukrei Action Gesselschaft. His first novel was dedicated to his Inang Bayan, the Philippines or it called the motherland. The history stated in the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" of Hariet Beecher Stowe, that tells the suffering of Negro slaves under the cruelty of the Americans, gave our hero the idea. In writing this book, he saw the similarities of this to the cruelty experienced by the Filipinos under the Spanish rule. This was published at Imprenta Lette in Berlin, Germany on March 1887 by the help of Dr. Maximo Viola who saved Noli Me Tangere by lending Rizal 300,000 for the printing of 2,000 copies of the novel. As thanks, Dr. Rizal gave the original manuscript and the PLUMA he used in writing the novel to Dr. Maximo Viola. Another important writing of our hero, his second novel, El Filibusterismo, a more profound and perfect than Noli Me Tangere. It comes from the word "filibustero" which means a person who is against the Roman Catholic. This book is a political novel. He started writing it on 1890 in London, England and was finished in Brussels, Belgium on 1891. This was dedicated to the "Three Martyrs", GOMBURZA (Fr. Mariano Gomez, Fr. Jose Burgos, and Fr. Jacinto Zamora). Dr. Rizal believed that the three martyrs were only a victim of cruelty and loss of justice. They was blamed, with a Sgt. Lamadrid, to be the leader of Cavite Mutiny on January 1872 and sentenced by garrote on February that year. El Filibusterismo was first published in a publication company in Ghent, Belgium. The publication of the book was stopped because of financial problem. By the help of Dr. Valentin Ventura, the publication resumed and was finished on September 18, 1891. As a favor, Dr. Rizal gave the original manuscript of the novel with an autographed copy of the book.
Noli Me Tangere is a romantic novel. It is a “work of the heart”-a book of feeling”. It has freshness, color, humor, lightness and wit and it contains 64 chapters compared to El Filibusterismo, it is a political novel. It is a “work of the head”-a book of the thought. It contains bitterness, hatred, pain, violence and sorrow and it contains 38 chapters. Rizal himself considered the Noli Me Tangere as superior to the El Filibusterismo, thereby agreeing with M.H. del Pilar who had the same opinion. The two novels were both written in Spanish. Noli Me Tangere describes revival in thought long dead meanwhile the El Filibusterismo describes the inconvenience oneself of society. Both of his 2 novels have similarities in terms of aim and purpose. Both are aim to enlighten the Filipinos on what is happening in the country. The 2 novels want the people to fight for their country and have the total freedom. They were both talk about how the Spaniards abused the Filipinos, the abuse of the church of their power, the discrimination on Filipinos. They are written by Rizal as a sequel. They convey one story and same characters but with great changes in their personality and a good novels from the point of view of history. They are both depicted with realistic colors the actual condition or setting -instrumental in awakening the spirit of nationalism. They are responsible in paving ground for the Philippine Revolution and show strong Anti-Clerical and Anti-Catholic color. In the 2 novels wrote by Dr. Jose Rizal, the main character of Noli Me Tangere is Crisostomo Ibarra who represents the indio (pure Filipino) who was fortunate enough to be educated abroad, he was known as the and became Simoun in El Filibusterismo after he came back to the Philippines after 13 years of absence to destroyed the Philippines. In the Noli Me Tangere is known as the courageous, civic-minded, liberty-loving and patriotic son of a wealthy landlordand a liberty European- educated Filipino but then in the novel El Filibusterismo, his personality changes. He returns to the Philippines to avenge the wrongs that were done to him and his lady love, Maria Clara. There are two characters become classic in Filipino culture: Maria Clara who has become of the ideal Filipina woman, loving and loyal to her spouse; and the priest Father Damaso, who reflects the covert fathering of illegitimate children by members of the Spanish clergy. Noli Me Tangere is being taught to third year secondary school students, while its sequel El Filibusterismo is being taught for fourth year secondary school students. Upon his return, Ibarra requested the local government of San Diego to construct a public school to promote education in the town.
Rizal depicted nationality by emphasizing the positive qualities of Filipinos: the devotion of a Filipina and her influence on a man's life, the deep sense of gratitude, and the solid common sense of the Filipinos under the Spanish regime. The work was instrumental in creating a unified Filipino nationality identity and consciousness, as many natives previously identified with their respective regions.
Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo are one of the best book I have read because it inspires me and see how important our country is to our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

In the original movie The Sandlot it introduces the lives of the kids and what they did on a regular day basis, it wasn’t all about baseball for them that added more to the storyline. Kids could relate more to this other than in Sandlot 2 because in this movie everything was about baseball. Also the movie went a little south for me when they talked more about science in The Sandlot 2 than baseball. In The Sandlot Smalls is taught how to play baseball and shown what to do when playing baseball. A different aspect that the Sandlot brought was the boys had fun childhood memories such as tree house sleepovers, lifeguard encounters, and baseball. The Sandlot 2 did not incorporate this into the movie by playing and having fun with your best friends, it felt more serious about other things detracting from the plot.…

I will be writing a comparative analysis based on two different articles that are about local farmers’ markets and whether they help or hinder the environment and community. I will be writing this for my English 111 class taught by Professor Johnson as well as for my peers. Local farmers’ markets have become a growing genre within the food culture and provide us with a specific type of food that is hard to find in a grocery store. The purpose of my writing will be to inform you of the different viewpoints on farmers’ markets. I believe that hearing two sides of every story will help to make your decision be more informed as to shopping locally or not. It is also apparent within these two different viewpoints, that there is a class of people who shop solely at farmers’ markets, and a class of people whom could greatly benefit the farmers’ market culture.…

Americans dietary habitats have been under close criticism, and media coverage has been very prominent in this critique, analyzing the way in which Americans have been eating. Through examples that stretch from nutritionists’ opinions to food labels our perceptions of good dietary habits have been largely skewed. The Food and Drug Administration has not been warning the public sufficiently about the harmful affects of the foods we consume. One of the most prominent, controversial, substances is sugar, which is also known as sucrose and fructose. Sugar is considered to be an under rated food that many consume without even thinking about what they are actually putting into their bodies. Through these two articles the reader is informed that sugar can be both “poisonous” and “deadly”. With the consumption of sugar rising, obesity rates are subsequently rising. In examining the impact of sugar on our health one may read, “The Toxic Truth About Sugar” written by Robert Lusting, Laura Schmidt and Clair Brindis, published in Nature volume 482 in February 2012 and “Is Sugar Toxic” by Gary Taubes, published in the New York Times Magazine on April 17, 2011. These two articles examine why individuals over consume sugar and the way in which individuals over consume sugar. All the while each article seemingly points out different solutions or potential solutions to the way in which the world should go about addressing this issue.…

They also show how people try to commit suicide when they are emotionally hurt. One last thing they have in common is that they show how most teenage girls overreact in certain situations.…

Continental philosophy, Pragmatic philosophy, and Analytic philosophy are all three forms of philosophies that are in response to Hegel. The differences began within English speaking countries and European speaking countries, which off-set into two separate traditions. Continental philosophy is the most different in its response to Hegelian idealism in Europe in the 19th and 20th century. The main schools of philosophical thought are existentialism, phenomenology, hermeneutics, deconstruction, and critical theory, being that existentialism and phenomenology are the two prominent schools. Some of the themes of existentialism include “Philosophy must focus on the individual in her or his confrontation with the world,” and “Senselessness, emptiness, triviality, separation, and inability to communicate pervade human existence, giving birth to anxiety, dread, self-doubt, and despair,” (Moore, B. N., & Bruder, K. , 2011, p. 154). Continental philosophers do not agree that science is the best way to describe the ways of life and emphasize on metaphilosophy. To me, Continental Philosophy is difficult to describe because it seems critical instead of expressive. Next, Pragmatic philosophy is the main tradition of philosophy in the United States. Overall, Pragmatic philosophy speaks of the lack of an absolute truth. The truth can change accordingly to any situation depending on the time and place. The three best known pragmatists are C.S Peirce, William James, and John Davey. Instrumentalism, which is Dewey’s product of pragmatism, says that human activity and human thoughts are instruments used by humans to solve practical problems. They believed that truth varied from person to person depending on where he/she wanted to progress in life. Lastly, Analytic philosophy is the main tradition of philosophy in England and later in the United States. Of course the main purpose of Analytic philosophy is analysis, which expresses complex concepts into more…

As a journalist and critic for Time Magazine, James Poniewozik concentrates on how the classic fairytale of Cinderella has been reinvented multiple times to correspond with the viewpoints of feminist authors. Poniewozik claims in his article "The Princess Paradox" that "girls choosing the fairy-tale ending is not such a bad thing" (667). However Peggy Orenstein, a contributing writer for The New York Times, would completely disagree with that statement. Orenstein stresses in her article Cinderella and Princess Culture that the "princess craze" and "girlie-girl" culture is ruining young girls as they feel constantly pressured to be perfect (673).…

Agamemnon would have turned his back on Achilles, which would have resulted in the loss of not only his own life, but the loss of the Trojan War. While Comparing and contrasting two theories/reasons for abnormal behavior I decided to choose the family systems theories and the Humanistic theories. The Humanistic theories are based on the assumption that humans have an innate capacity for goodness and for living a full life (Hoeksema 2011). The humanistic theorist recognized that we often are not aware of the forces shaping out behavior and that the environment can pay a huge role in our life. For example, living in a stressful environment can often lead to depression. It wasn’t until Carl Rogers in 1951 developed the best know version of the Humanistic theory. Rogers believed that without undue pressure from other people, individuals naturally move towards personal growth. Basically without having someone telling you what to do or someone making your choices, when someone is face to do it alone they become more independent. Therapy for Humanistic therapy is to let the client find out from themselves what their own potential is. So instead of the therapist giving orders on what to do, they wait for the client to be able to heal themselves. Carl Rogers came up with the client- centered therapy. Which is instead of acting like the authority, the therapist role is to be an authentic (genuine) person. This was a positive therapy in the 1960s and is still used today in self-help groups and peer counseling.…

Both Julia Alvarez and Tato Laviera come from countries and cultures that are looked down upon by many people. Though each of their poems portray dramatically different points of view. In Julia Alvarez’s poem the girl she describes (herself) seems suppressed, she does what she can to fit in even if it means not doing something that she otherwise might have done. In Tato Laviera’s poem he is very positive and hopeful, he has come here to make a better life for him and his family and even though he is oppressed because of his skin color and culture he creates a new equality for himself and others.…
