Community Service Learning Project
Participating in community service is a good way to give back to the community that I live in, therefore I have always been excited when I have the opportunity to volunteer for my community. I was extremely excited when I found out that I have to do a Service Learning Project for this class because I have always enjoyed doing community service since I started doing it in high school. I had a hard time deciding what to do in the beginning, but later I realized that I could be a leader of the Awana club at my church. Working with kids is something that I enjoy doing, so that is why I made the decision to do my community service at Awana. After I decided to do this for my project, I talked to the commander of the club, and she was glad that I …show more content…
I was assigned to work with different kids during the three nights that I was a leader. Shawn and Joyce were the first two kids that I worked with, and both of them are in second grade this year. They are both hardworking and wonderful kids, but they refused to do anything in the beginning of handbook time, which made me nervous because I was unsure of what to do. The reason why they did not want to do anything is that they did not understand what the verses that they have to memorize are about. Later, I figured out a way to help them focus better and memorize the Bible verses, which is to explain what each verse means in a way that they enjoy and understand. This turned out perfectly because they started to focus and wanted to learn more about God and the Bible. I felt relieved and happy in the end when both Shawn and Joy told me that they like handbook time. I think the main reason that they ended up liking handbook time is that this time they actually know what the verses that they memorized are about, instead of just memorizing something that they do not …show more content…
We played games such as, sparky crawl, rabbit hunt, and sprint relay. Sparky crawl is the game where kids race to crawl to the other side of the gym, and the fastest team wins. Rabbit hunt is like a dodgeball game, the teams that are inside the circle have to avoid getting hit by the balls thrown by the other three teams, and the kids that get hit have to go out of the circle. When time is up, the team with the most kids inside the circle wins. Sometimes the leaders will be inside the circle, and they have to avoid getting hit by the balls thrown by the four teams. Sprint relay is like a running relay race, and the fastest team wins. Like most kids, I also enjoyed game time the most because it was nice to see that kids are having fun and I also had the opportunity to meet other kids and play games with

To promote cognitive development, I will provide activities and materials to develop children's curiosity, problem solving and reasoning skills. I will provide a time in our daily schedule for exploring our manipulative cabinet where there are puzzles, magnets, gears, colored counting cubes and blocks. When reading stories I will ask open-ended questions and allow time for discussion. During circle time we will sing many fun songs about the letters of the alphabet and days of the week. Every other week we go to the library and have the librarian read to us. For the child with special needs I will have pencil holders and give extra time to complete their projects.…

Personally, I have been involved in my community since I was in the Boy Scouts of America. As I acsended through to the top rank of Boy Scouts known as an Eagle Scout, many projects were conducted. For example, I have planned and conducted my own Eagle Scout project in 2009; this project consisted of building a roof for my local firehouse. Other community service includes roadside clean-ups, annual earth day events, and fellow Eagle Scout projects. Since my community college career, I have been well involved with our campus and community. Particularly in Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society of all community colleges, where I have become the President of our chapter. Within the society, the objectives include a honor's in action project…

We played adding and subtracting games with blocks to improve math skills, wrote stories about different topics to improve reading and writing skills, built volcanoes to improve science skills, and arts and crafts. I came up with each activity on my own to accomplish the goal of creating a fun, yet educational learning environment for the students. At the end of the day other counselors and myself brought the students together for enrichment, a time for the children to let loose and be themselves. That was a time for the kids to dance, play sports, or just sit around and nap that was their time to rule the building. Outside of the site the students went on field trips that allowed them to be kids. The most memorable trip that was taking was our tip to Old Mississippi State Capitol where we learned about the history of our…

The first service learning project I completed was in 2006 which was a participation in tutoring a year six student in the Aquinas College junior school. This tutoring was during winter. After the first week I found it difficult to complete three sport trainings a week (1 in Melville), an after school guitar lesson, a hockey game on Friday nights plus the tutoring program, I thought I was going to have to stop the tutoring and complete service learning in a different area. But after the first week of tutoring I found that tutoring became a priority, I felt that Ricardo found the tutoring much help and seemed to benefit from it. I finished the tutoring program without missing one session.…

As long as I can remember service to others was always encouraged by my family and teachers. For example, I helped teachers with the intent of lightening their load of work so they can be able to go home earlier. Things like this make me proud because I am able to help others, and to bring a smile to their faces. My excuse to avoid community service was that I always thought that school was all about homework and getting good grades to be on the top 20 of your class. Truth is I have always overlooked this people thinking they were being lazy for not working, but through this community service I learned that each and everyone around the world is fighting their own battles and we all deal with them the best way we can. I am proud of myself because I went to that community service and learned about this people who I had always stereotyped by their actions, community service has encouraged me to actively listen and learn from others, to walk alongside my neighborhood and to build new…

I was involved in many service learning experiences all throughout highschool. I was on National Honors Society and we would ring bells for Salvation Army and adopt children around Christmas time. We often volunteered at schools to help watch children, while parents were receiving help in finding careers or when they were being helped in some other manner. However, my favorite service learning that I was involved in was helping coach Special Olympics. This service learning is one of the reasons I am becoming a teacher, and one of the main reasons why my focus is Special Education. I coached my team in soccer, basketball, and track. I loved every minute of it. I spent more time with those kids than I have with any other service learning combined. I coached them starting my sophomore year all the way until I left for college. It was hard leaving my team and I am upset that I cannot go back and see them more often. Service learning has made a huge impact on my life and is something that everyone should become involved with. When you find that one cause that you are passionate about helping with it can transform your life like it did…

I did my service learning project on the North Shore of Pittsburgh. I volunteered at Providence Family Support Center. At the center they focus on caring, strengthening and enriching families and lives. They provide inner city children between the ages of six weeks and 13 years a stimulating and engaging child care experience. They offer help for the entire family by incorporating their highly trained family development specialists along with daily volunteers so the families are able to build a solid foundation at home.…
