Community Service
People complain everyday about the problems in this world, and I am one of them. One of my complaints is about people who complain!. I have a high respect for those who take actions to try to solve these problems instead of complaining. Being a part of this community, we all share the responsibility of helping and supporting each other. We have to do our best to give the helping hand and draw smiles. This is exactly what the term “community service” means. Many people think that volunteering is just hours they need to do for the school, and some of them feel like that they are forced to volunteer. But to me, volunteering is more than this. To volunteer is to make a change. I thought that this change should be in the world, society or someone’s life. But in fact, what I never thought about is that this change is going to be in my life. Here is the story. In the community service class, it was my first time to intend to volunteer. We were supposed to finish a specific number of hours to get an “A+” in this course. My teacher started to talk about community service and how it is important…etc. Meanwhile, I got exited and I immediately started thinking about what I am going to do. After that, the bell rang disturbing my thoughts and announcing the end of the class. One week after, one of my classmates suggested a place to volunteer, which was The General Dhahran Hospital. A group of girls and I made plans and organized for that day; we were all so exited. One day in the afternoon, we went there. The place was not like a normal hospital, it was like a deserted place that no one has visited for a long time. It was also too small and quite like no one is there. Our plan was: first, visit the patients and talk to them. Then, distribute the dinner meals that we had bought, and finally, go around and write down their needs. However, the first part was very hard and painful. From the first glance, I could not stand not to cry. I have not ever thought one day that there are

Volunteers find a sense of self worth, empathy, gratitude, and responsibility. Personally, helping the community and providing a service to the community allows for a boost in confidence. Our world is often corrupt and unjust, but by twisting balloons and face painting, I learned that regardless of age, the youth of today can make major impacts on society, one smile at a time, even if it is just for a slight…

I volunteer in my community whenever I get the opportunity. For example, I helped students get to school safely and I helped out around the school. I volunteered at the public library to help younger children. I now see it is hard work to get children focused and help them not make a big mess, but I enjoyed helping them in any way I can. Volunteering at the public library also taught me about patience. Not everything went exactly how I planned it out, but at the end it still worked out. My time at the library also taught me about effort.…

For my friends and I it was going to the big, red bricked church down the road and getting free sack lunches. Studies have shown that volunteering increases overall health (“Benefits of Volunteering”). It helps individuals learn or develop skill sets that can be used to further job opportunities. Volunteering gives a person a sense of pride like no other and teaches people to become humble and respectful of others. While serving in a soup kitchen in Huntsville, I realized just how dependent others are on us for their survival. It was this experience that helped me understand that the people you come in contact with to help will stay with you forever.…

Many people engage in community service project because they are either forced as a punishment or sentence. Others engage in community service out of Spirit of unselfishness, or a desire to connect with their communities by helping out. For me, it brings a sense of completeness. During the past few semester my team members and I have engage in different projects, Collecting food, clothes and donating to the homeless. In a way I’ve experience working the different organizations and helping the community. But with this particular project, it meant much more then collecting for the disadvantaged, It was about lending a hand and your heart to a community in need.. During my involvement in this fieldwork project I got the opportunity to offer my unconditional assistance for one day in a non-profit making community based project. The name of the project was Liberty City Construction, which is being undertaken by a Christian ministry organization whose aim is to improve the livelihood of low-income families through building affordable and decent houses at a 0% interest rate. The organization founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda fuller has built and rehabilitated more then 100,000 families in need, becoming the world leader in addressing the issues if poverty housing. Community service in its ideal form is a way of doing something positive for the community. When everything in the community seems to be breaking, families falling apart at the seems, economic leaders telling us to prepare for a loss of economic will, I get upset and I ask myself have we really arrived at a true and lasting definition of what community service really means. I have helped feed the homeless on many occasions through many different church groups. Very much have I enjoyed providing Christmas presents for families in distress. I’ve been part of highly organized community services like coaching troubled youth in roller hockey. This was what I knew and what I could offer to my community because I had the opportunity.…

    The Ultimate Service

Community service allows one to possess the heart-warming feeling of happiness and thankfulness. Regardless of how big or long the service is, the feeling of gratitude envelops the body and creates a new positive perspective. For example, back in November 2009, I performed community service with my cousin Kristy and her church. We drove out to Los Angeles, entered a compact church, and set up food to feed the homeless. While others set up tables and chairs, my cousin and I helped the older women prepare food. Together we made Korean barbeque, rice, and several side dishes. Once we opened the doors, I was appalled at the number of homeless people that lived in Los Angeles. While the countless number of people began to form a line, I slowly scanned each individual only to end up feeling a little melancholy. They were dirty, scrawny, withered down, and weak. I wanted to help. Unfortunately there was no way I could fix the homeless’ situation. As a result, I did the next best thing and talked to them after serving them a full plate of food. I had the opportunity to…

    A Heart Warming Experience

There is an old saying that goes, "it is better to give than to receive." I have just truly realized how powerful that saying was after I have done my 12 hours of community service and my other completed hours from the past years. There is no greater feeling of fulfillment when one dedicates their time to someone whom needs some caring. In my 12 hours of community service, I had volunteered in my church, gift wrap gifts at the Agnew center, and helped at the Christmas party that the Portuguese threw for the under privilege children at Lyndale Elementary School. I knew that I made a difference somehow in someway in my community. I wish that each and every individual would find it in their hearts to give up themselves and sacrifice at least an hour for someone who needs to be fed, clothe, comforted, guided, and this could go on, but for someone who is grasping for help. There is definitely something very satisfying about giving one's time and one's sweat and dirty hand. An indescribable feeling of joy that lingers in our heart.…
