In discussing public health issue in my community, we have to first of all define community health.
First, what is a community? According to Dr Chavez, a community is thought to be a very homogeneous group of people that have something in common. (Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2007). Things they have in common may be, the same language, the same ethnicity or race, people living in the same neighborhood, people having something that make them similar. (Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2007).
The World Health Organization (WHO) define community as a group of people, often living in a defined geographical area, who share a common culture, values and norms. (Cohen, L. (2012). Communities gather together to take action on something that they know and feel that is right, they mobilize for campaign for something that they want. (Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2007). Community sustains life and ensures human survival. (Cohen, L. (2012).
Secondly, what is health? According to Dr Chavez, health is not just the absence of disease, it is having the right to those things that make one well, for instance, clean water, good housing and a break from job. (Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2007).
Furthermore, according to the healthy community public health movement, a healthy community is defined as one that is continually creating and improving those community resources which enable people to mutually support each other in performing all the functions of life and achieving their maximum potential. (Cohen, L. (2012).

While this may be the typical image of a community, it is not the realistic view. In reality communities can share both good and bad aspects. In Place Matters: Metropolitics for the Twenty-First Century Peter Dreier, John Mollenkopf, and Todd Swanstrom make the argument that the place a person lives ultimately matters over all else; the place which a person lives effects the choices that that he/she makes and determines his/her ability to obtain a high quality of life.…

It is a term inclusive of both physical and nonphysical factors. The physical factors include the people in our town, the town’s infrastructure, its services, its conditions such as level of sanitation, and more. The nonphysical factors include the amount of money earned by the population, the interaction and support the town offers, and other social determinants. This is a broader definition of community than offered by the documentary, Unnatural Causes. Unnatural Causes does not explicitly define “community” but shows through many examples that a community is one’s immediate surroundings, predominantly the group of people by which someone is surrounded. From watching the videos, a community to me became more than what is around someone’s house; it became everyone and everything that affects a group of people, whether connected through geography or…

According to Stanhope and Lancaster, (2008, p. 192) “A community is defined as a social network of interacting individuals, usually concentrated in a defined territory.” Members within a community interact with each other in local businesses, schools, hospitals, and churches; this interaction creates a sense of belonging and purpose within the community. Community health recognizes the specific health needs of the community, offering resources and health education to improve community health outcomes. Community health is defined as “the meeting of collective needs by identifying problems and managing behaviors within the community itself and the between the community and larger society” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008, p. 347).
