Communication Strategies for Different Intelligences

Introduction Communication is the exchange of, ideas, information, and personal expression between people. There are many different forms of communication including: signs, sounds, language, telephone, mass media, and computers (Fidel 2010). Some forms of communication are more effective than others. People with different intelligences, working in a team-based environment, need to form a strategy for effectively communicating with other team members to accomplish team goals.
This paper will examine different strategies for effectively communicating between people with different intelligences. The importance of knowing how to communicate with people with different multiple intelligences, will be vital to working in a team-based environment. The first step to building a working relationship with team members is to understand each member’s strengths and weaknesses in how he or she can contribute to the success of the team. This is done with effective communication between team members.
The different intelligences discussed in this paper, and methods for communicating effectively in a team environment, will be verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, interpersonal, and visual-spatial, based on Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory (Carter et al. 2007).
Verbal-Linguistic
A sound strategy for communicating effectively with individuals with a verbal-linguistic intelligence would be to clearly express ideas and discuss topics that keep him or her engaged. The use of parables, or stories to relate subject matter to will allow for this type of learner to learn and understand. Because this type of learner likes to read, and is usually good at expressing his or her views from the material he or she reads, most types of oral or written communication will be effective (Carter et al 2007).
