Communication Skills and Technologies Used in Healthcare Management
There are many forms of social networking that Healthcare Managers can use in their professional lives. Many hospitals, doctor’s offices, management teams, and clinics are using Twitter and blogging to stay abreast of the many happenings in the field. I searched Google and found blogs, associations, societies, and networks, all related to the Healthcare Management field.

Executive Healthcare Management Online is a website filled with news, tips and editorials. They call themselves “the online source for the modern Healthcare Management professional…” (Executive Healthcare Management Online, 2010). I found many tips regarding social networking and how it is being developed in this field. This website led me to an article on the Mayo Clinic website. The Mayo Clinic is planning to open a social media center. Their hope for this center is to “accelerate effective application of social media tools throughout Mayo Clinic and to spur broader and deeper engagement in social media by hospitals, medical professionals and patients to improve health globally.” They also have a Facebook page, a YouTube channel, a Twitter account, and a news and podcast blog (Mayo Clinic, 2010).

Social networking is a large part of Healthcare Management and is growing all the time. From the research I have done, social networking is not only accepted but encouraged in this field.

Many organizations have chosen to use this as a benefit to their companies. Sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn can be used to relay news and help to expand their business. These forms of networking may also help an organization to improve, since comments can be left by patrons. Valuable information can be found on these sites as well. Patients may also use these sites to communicate with other patients about past experiences at that facility or to get general information. This can be an important aspect, since many people like to get feedback before choosing a healthcare facility to go to.…

Social media poses threat to all health care environments, if not used appropriately. I agree that the inappropriate use of social media does violate the code of ethics, the healthcare facilities policy and HIPPA. The inappropriate use of social media can range from posting information on a patient’s condition to checking Facebook instead of giving a patient insulin when their glucose levels are in the 200+ range. The use of social media at the workplace continues to pose a distraction to employees. Within the nursing practices studies have shown that social media has “the potential to cause distractions and interruptions. Several studies have implicated technology as a contributing factor in causing distractions and interruptions among nurses.…

Plain communication failures have been revealed to cause medical errors, duplicating imaging and testing, and generally unfortunate care organization. Physicians-to-physicians communication in and out of the hospital has been unpredictable or absent. Furthermore, physician-to-physician communication has been missing in terms of steadiness, suitability, and immediacy. Social networks could possibly expand communication by creating everlasting channels (network connections) amongst several doctors and between doctors and the patients. Communication amongst doctors might be developed through extensive contribution in online physician group of people. After doing research in the technology area, I have found several methods in which pharmacies are adapting to improve their businesses. These include creating phone applications, the use of social media, utilizing and analyzing their patients’ data and the use of cloud storage. Through our past meetings, I understand our group does not want to move in the direction of improving Target’s phone applications due to the technicalities involved. In view of our short time span to work on Target’s case, as well as our familiarity with social media platforms, I propose that we look into the use of social media and the collection and analysis of patients’ data.…

The quality of medical care has been improved as there is more communication between patients and medical professionals, as well as communication and support between individuals. Important messages can be delivered quicker and easier than they once were, and information is much more accessible than it once was as well. There a a wide range of apps to help individuals get and stay healthy, as well as share their progress with others. However, as with anything, there are disadvantages to social health care. Privacy and confidentiality is very hard to be kept when using social media, as is professionalism while still providing patients with friendly, secure relationships. Also, it can be hard to determine what information is accurate and what sources are trustworthy. Overall, social media is changing health care, creating many opportunities to build off of and engage all to create a healthier population connecting and collaborating to a healthier…
